Re: Powerbook overheating badly

2004-06-11 Thread gf sciacca
i has a similar issue just recently with my Lombard. In this
instance overheating was caused by the HD continuously seeking even in
sleep mode (one could hear it). The machine however behaved normally if
logging in under a different, newly created user. You might want to try
this step as well before turnung the machine in. I was also advised by
list members to send my HD under warranty for replacement, which I was about
to do, but Hitachi insisted I'd do some troubleshooting first.

cheers, gianfranco

Just wondering if anybody has had this problem with their PB. I have
a 6 month old 15 AL PB. Recently, I came home and found that the PB
was extremely hot to the touch. It had been in sleep mode.
When I lifted it up, it had actually left two burn/char marks in the
table as well as a white mark where the finish of the table was
 damaged.

I don't think it should be getting that hot! Maybe the fans are not
working. Mine definitely gets warm and I have seen temps at 58 or 59c
but not higher than that. In sleep mode it should stay cold as nothing
will be running. Time to get Apple to look at it

From: AKR [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Just wondering if anybody has had this problem with their PB.
I also have a 15 1GHz AlBook which gets hot, but not THAT hot!
If I just run it the surface below the screen gets hot, very hot to
the touch, but I have the Mac placed on a couple rubber pieces
picked from an old Mac II case, and I have a PC fan gently
circulating the air, which makes a huge difference.
The PC fan is a 3 (?) internal fan connected to a 6 or 7.5V
transformer so that it runs slower and is therefore soundless.

Re: Powerbook overheating badly

2004-06-10 Thread michael_shaw

I suspect that my laptop computer never overheats.

The fan has never come on.

I wrote a short piece for the Double Click newsletter (either the April or May
issuedownload from Files menu on the www.mause.ca website) about active and
passive coolers for laptop computers.

I am using the one for sale from www.xoxide.com for about $15.00 that has two small
USB-powered fans and gives me a temperature drop that is clearly visible on the graph
when I run ThermographX.

Just ran across that PDF last week, Michael. I'm pretty sure it's in
the May NL. It's well worth reading. For those who want an exact URL,
you can find it here:

Agreed. Very not normal. Send it with pictures of burn marks - suspect
no argument will be heard!
