RAM compatibility

2003-12-11 Thread Jacob Saariaho
I just inherited a slot loading iMac 350 MHz that I want to upgrade to
Panther. Question is, will the 128 MB DIMM that I took out of my 333
MHz G3 PowerBook work in it. - Jacob

Jacob,
No. The iMac uses 168 pin DIMM's and the G3 Powerbook uses 144 pin
SO-DIMM's. Sorry.

G3/G4 RAM Compatibility

2003-07-17 Thread S. Stoner
Hi Everyone,

Newbie here. :) I'm sure this has been asked countless times, but I'm
trying to determine if RAM from a TiBook would work in a Wallstreet.
Last week I found an article on Google that detailed, for example, how
TiBooks can use 16x16 so-dimms while Wallstreets can't. Unfortunately I
didn't bookmark it, and I've been unable to find it again. I'm not even
sure what 16x16 is (except that it refers to 256 MB and has something to
do with the layout of the chips on the module, right?) or how to recognize
it if I saw it. I've been looking for a cheap 256 MB module for my
Wallstreet II (300 MHz) before even attempting to install Jaguar. I
currently have 320 MB, but I've heard maxing the RAM to 512 MB is
recommended (and that maxing the RAM makes more difference than a low-end
processor upgrade, true?). I've seen decent prices on eBay for 256 MB
pulls from TiBooks, but I'm concerned they might not work in my
Wallstreet. Besides the basic will-it-work question, can anyone help me
with the specs that I would need to know to determine if a so-dimm
marketed to the PC world would work? I've sometimes found that items
marketed to the PC world are cheaper than the identical items marketed to
the Mac world.

By the way, is there an archive of this group that I could have searched
to see if this has already been addressed? Also, can anyone point me in
the direction of a good glossary or site that explains the difference
between 8x32 and 16x16, 3x2x2 and 2x2x2, etc?

Many thanks!

Susan
