 Hi!

How did you end up with 597 MB of RAM? It's usually 128, 256, 512, 768 or
1 GB. I'm curious to see how you got 597...

He probably has 64 + 512 = 576, maybe with virtual memory enabled.

Most slim form burners are compatible with the expansion bay unit, just swap
them in for the original DVD. Check out the xlr8yourmac Database under Pismo
and Expansion bay.

You could also consider a DVD-R/W, such as the UJ-825 from Panasonic, the
same 4x DVD-R drive that Apple uses in the G4's. Prices are falling, e.g.
you can get it at newegg for around $140-150, which is a great deal (if they
shipped overseas I'd buy one myself! drat...). You can find new Combo
CD-RW/DVD (DVD read only) drives for under $80 if you want to spend less.
You might also need to modify the controller board in the expansion bay unit
to have the drive recognized as Master (ID = 0), which prevents sleep/hot
swap/boot problems (drive not recognized). Or check xlr8yourmac for a drive
that comes set to Master from the factory.

Lots of choice. Good luck,
Chris

Hi my Samsung drive was a simple case of slide the old drive from the caddy
and fit the new drive in.

same connector type on each drive. the only down side is the face plate door
doe's not fit, so i have a small gap at the bottom of the drive where the
old face plate hooked under.

Hi!

How did you end up with 597 MB of RAM? It's usually 128, 256, 512, 768 or
1 GB. I'm curious to see how you got 597...

As for the DVD burner, you might be able to get an external FireWire one.
There has been a few patch that will fool OS X in thinking that the drive
is recognized. OS X will only recognize internal drives that were sold by
Apple by default.

You might also be able to find a drive that would fit in your DVD drive
expansion bay. Look in the G-Books list archive and I'm sure you'll find
plenty of messages from users that got one in their Pismo.

I have used the Sony CRX820E DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive in both a Lombard and
a Pismo. It is also the a model of drive used in the 2002 iBook, so it
supports burning in Toast, iTunes, etc...
