Though the term Low-End-Mac seems inappropriate for a 2K - 2.5K
laptop; the common underpinning under all of these computers is the OS.
While unfortunately the latest Al-Books don't allow booting to OS9, and
there are some discussions on this list regarding OS9 problems; this
lack of functionality hasn't stopped the inclusion of said 'books. One
of the most effective things regarding the Apple system is the community
that has built around it, and welcomed new Win'tel converts. Whether
you believe this latest move on Apple's part is good or bad, to begin to
dissolve that community for simply a means of protest against a bit of
silicon seems silly and does a disservice to this list and the potential
transfer of knowledge through discussion.

Inter alia, in notes:

Apple used the industry-standard SPEC suite components SPECint2000 and

I'm not disagreeing with you, but had to ask. This list does focus on
the G3/G4 series of 'book, regardless of the OS. There's a separate
list tho, for the older powerbooks-- 040 and up---different
processors, different OS (sometimes :) ), different list.

Well said, Michael. I have used Macs exclusively since 1985 and enjoy
the lists I am on, learning from them all. I will admit to a tinge of
discomfort when I heard about intelmacs. But last night I watched Jobs'
Macworld presentation via the Apple site and must admit to feeling the
urge to pony up for the new iMac. When one moves forward there is always
something to be left behind... I hope there are no deal breaker issues
with this transition.

I suspect the laggy performance is being compared to systems with
better video, or all the OpenGL doodad options being turned on, or
sluggish networks, because GE slurps bandwidth like crazy. (If you're
on an Airport with you, your wife, the kids and three mooching
neighbors, you ain't got much bandwidth left on a typical cable
connection...)

It runs quite nicely on my system, an 800 MHz G4 with an original
radeon card, and a 10 mbit ethernet connection.

Google is rewriting a Windows-Only app to run on multiple architectures.

You can do that by making a separate app for every architecture, or
do it the way they are, use a cross-platform library. (They're using
QT http://www.trolltech.com) By their nature, cross-platform
libraries tend to be less efficient.

I suppose you could make GE work on low-end hardware by getting in
there and hand-coding assembler, but, then, if that was the way to
develop we'd never get GE on any platform.

SCHWT but...
Here in OZ http://www.apple.com.au/macbookpro the starting price is AUD
3999 instead of USD 1999. Current exchange rate of about 1AUD=0.75USD
should have the price at AUD 2,700 so Aussies get ripped off by a

I'd expect some sort of price differential but not that much. Oh well,

Well obviously they want you to go to the Apple store version, black
type on white background, and a convenient, tempting buy one now

I LOVE the mag-safe power connector, given that my intrepid doofo-

One of the benchmarks they offer is the cinebench http://

Is anything available for this ExpressCard slot? I've never heard of

 I didn't know about the air-cooled G5. However, I do
 remember the G3
Lombard and Pismo managing extraordinary battery
 life on one or two
batteries. Then again, I'll be using my Lombard
 through the end of High
School, so there. I'll have to check real-world life
 on mine, but I'm
sure it'll keep up with a Centrino on battery life
 with a new one..

Actually it doesn't. Powerbooks use their cases as part of the heat
sink, and Pentium-4 based laptops step the CPU speed way down.

The new Pentium M class run cooler but also sport big fans. I was
loading Adobe Creative suite on a new one the other day and it was
like having a space heater on my desk, with a fan blasting hot air
out the side. Powerbook fans come on at higher temps.
