Re: wireless networking

2002-03-21 Thread Dick Grable

After having one for over a year I have found it to be much easier to just
connect the computers to the router. If you only have one computer and your
DSL service does not have any unusual requirements then maybe you donĀ¹t want
to part with the dollars for a router. We have a wireless network so one is
required. Besides the hardware firewall it has simplified our home install
(both with DSL and Cable Modem).

Dick,

Are you saying that if I put a router between the modem and the comp,
I'll have no problem with the setup?

Contact your DSL provider to see if there are requirements for installing
this modem. Or, pick up a hardware router and enjoy the benefits of the
hardware firewall and easy setup. Also if you want to connect other
computers it's a snap. My recommendation is the SMC. They provide Mac
support and have an excellent warranty.

Listers,

I am trying to set up ADSL, on a Lombard 333, using an Alcatel Speed
Touch Home modem and am not having much success. Any pointers?

Alan.

This would be better for me, as all my pci slots are full in the beige g3.

To be a little more explicit (as a later poster was), Kate's best solution
is probably:
- Hardware base station
- Airport card for your Pismo

The hardware base station will have Ethernet (some have hubs/switches) which
you can hook to your Beige.

This seems like something that could/should be added to IPNetRouter. I
suppose that there are no drivers, though. :(

The Beige G3 will take a pci adapter with a pcmcia card in it. After
that, it should work fine with Software base station...if it works with
airport, it should connect to a software base station. I don't think it
can BE a SBS, but to the airport hardware, a base station is a base
station. Farallon sells 'em, as do a number of other vendors. I know
Farallon's are compatible.

The only drawback to the pci solutions for desktops is the added cost of
the pci adapter...A buddy of mine was all heeped up about getting a
bunch of them at $40 to build a wireless network, until I pointed out
the fine print, that that price was *without* the 802.11 pcmcia card
needed to make it all work ;-)

That said, Mitchell was right, a hardware base station will be more capable.

Sigh. I just wish that the Airport software would run on a non-PowerPC
mac...I've seen 16-bit 802.11 cards that should work in my 540 if only
the Airport software would...:-/

Pismos can take Airport, G3 beige cannot. You can buy a 802.11b PCI card,
but I'm not sure about Mac compatibility or if it will work with Software
Base Station.

Non-Apple wireless base stations are very cheap now ($150 or so), you'd
probably be better off getting one of those.

You can use the Airport software to setup a machine as a Software Base
Station, as opposed to purchasing a Hardware Base Station. However, I'm not
aware that a G3 beige desktop or a Pismo can hold AirPort cards.
