Sudo, followed by a command, will prompt you for your password. Once you successfully enter your password, that command will be run as the root (or another) user on the system. By default under OS X, the root user, and anyone with admin privileges (ie the user you created during your OS X install) will have the ability to run any command as root via sudo. This access is controlled by a file called /etc/sudoers, and can be edited with the visudo command. That file, and the command to edit it can be accessed only at the command line. Sudo is nice in that you can give someone rights to only run a single command or shell script as root, even if they are not a root or admin equivalent. Typing man sudo at the command prompt will give you a ton of information on the sudo command and all it's permutations. Hope this helps... Removing Previous System Files
After days of struggling with OS 10.2.8 v.1, I gave up trying to fix the mess it was making of my Lombard and did an archive and re-install. Then I ran the 10.2.6 combo updater and I'm back to a stable state. I can run apps without the fear of my screen going all psychedelic on me. But, now I have a folder called previous systems on my hard drive. How do I get rid of the thing? Lawrence -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Removing Previous System Files
Yes, it should be so simple. But when I move the folder to the trash I'm told that I can't delete it because it belongs to root. Who is root and how do I get permission to delete this file? As for the final? 10.2.8 release, I think I'll give it a few days this time and let someone else work test this one. Larry On Monday, October 6, 2003, at 10:47 PM, Laurent Daudelin wrote: Huh? R. Lawrence Ballew wrote: Yes, it should be so simple. But when I move the folder to the trash I'm told that I can't delete it because it belongs to root. Who is root and how do I get permission to delete this file? root is the superuser account, who can do anything they want on a Unix system. (which is why root login is disabled on Macs out of the box) Try this, presuming you're an administrative user. Start Terminal. at the prompt type 'cd /' (without the ''s) then type sudo rm -r Previous\ Systems (or whatever the folder is called, exactly..if you start typing the name and hit the tab key in the Terminal, it will autocomplete the name if you've typed enough of it to be unique) This will delete that folder. As for the final? 10.2.8 release, I think I'll give it a few days this time and let someone else work test this one. Sigh..the *only* identified problem with 10.2.8 was that the ethernet driver for some G4 towers was messed up under *some* conditions. (if you used the 169.x.x.x non-routed subnet) If you'd updated to 10.2.8 before they pulled the update, then ran software update again, you got the new 10.2.8 update, which is 500k in size and explicitly says it's the fixed ethernet drivers for those G4 systems. *ALL* the other complaints of 10.2.8 did this to me and 10.2.8 did that to me and 10.2.8 ate my homework, drank the milk right from the jug and ran off with my girlfriend are largely mis-identification of other problems and blaming them on the update. -- Bruce Johnson University of Arizona College of Pharmacy Information Technology Group Institutions do not have opinions, merely customs -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
