difference. Not having to worry about extra heat generated inside the
Powerbook is also important.

Video will be ripped to an external drive anyway, so everything won't
be integrated (I have 17g available on my Powerbook drive but an entire
60gb available on an external FW drive). I'm not going to be wandering

SuperDrive Dilemma

2005-02-16 Thread Timothy Luoma
I'm trying to decide between
MCE Lucid-M8X 8x DVD±R/RW + 2.4x Double Layer Portable FireWire Drive
http://www.mcetech.com/lucidm8x.html
$279
and
MCE 8X SuperDrive Upgrade for PowerBook G4 with Double Layer Support
http://www.mcetech.com/pbg4dvdr8dl.html
$249
Obviously the portable Firewire one could be used with other computers
(I don't have another one that I'd use it with currently, but you never
know when another computer will show up ;-) But it's external, another
thing to carry around, etc.

The internal drive is easier to deal with. Basically that's the only
advantage that I can see. It's a little cheaper, but then there's
postage (to send it to MCE) or a service charge (if I find a local
reseller who can install it). Assuming that I can find somewhere to
install it, I assume they'd charge at least $30 to install it, and if I
have to send it to MCE I'm going to be w/o my computer for a few days.
So the price is a wash to me.

I'm leaning towards the external. It's not very big, if anything goes
wrong with it, it can be sent off for repair/replacement without
leaving me w/o the use of my Powerbook, I can use it w/ other
computers, no concerns about excess heat, and if I do go somewhere w/o
it and need to burn a DVD-R, I still can do that.

Anyone have other thoughts, esp. why I ought to consider the internal?
Anyone else have one of these drives?

IIRC, you're putting this in a Lombard, right? If so I think you'll get
tired of waiting for a DVD to master with the G3, and don't even
consider doing movies. In fact iDVD won't load on less than a 733mhz G4
now. So that means the external drive, but you'll also have to get a
Firewire card for the Lombard.

I'm actually looking at getting an *internal* drive and putting it in
