Not with Logic and Maya! What are your sources for that claim if 1/3 faster?

Re: Thoughts on a trade

2005-04-05 Thread Muddle Man
Knowing these things probably would have changed our
suggestions as well.

I struggled with the same exact problem before I
bought my G4 733 QuickSilver. As you can read, I
decided on the single processor.

As I understand it, a dual processor is only about 1/3
faster than it's actual Mhz rating in OS X (since OS X
supports dual processors). For most tasks you'll be
better off with the single 733. The only exception
would be if you are using a new version of Photoshop
and do serious work with it (since it supports mutiple
processors as well).

I had a B&W G3 450 before my 733. I had an ATA
controller in it and multiple drives. It worked fine
most of the time, but gave me a hassle occasionally.
My QuickSilver, however, as given me NO problems at
all. I am extremely happy with it. Do yourself a favor
and get as much RAM as you can (I maxed mine out to
1.5 and haven't looked back).

Thoughts on a trade

2005-04-05 Thread Orlando Mac Geek
First off I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to
asnwer, just a few additional points of discussion.

1. Portability - While I appreciate everyone saying I should stick
with my Ti Powerbook, my mind is already make up to move to desktop.
I have a computer at work already and that is pretty much the only
other place I use my laptop. For portability I would have to say what
I have sucks. I have broken hinges which means I always need to be up
against the wall. Also have a battery which only gives me about 30
minutes of use and a lot less if doing anything CPU heavy.
One of the main reasons I want to get a desktop is to leave it at
home where I can have an FTP server setup and also want to use it as a
Tivo type DVR.
Another problem as I see it with the Powerbook is a complete lack
of upgradability. I can't put in a better video card, can't put in a
new CPU. Already maxed out my ram. I am definitly a tinkerer as far
as my hardware goes. I enjoy the flexibility that a tower would give
me as far as upgradaibility (if that is even a word).

2. My main question - Still have not gotten an answer as far as the
performace difference between a dual G4/450 and a single G4/733. The
machine will be used mainly for web surfing, e-mail, watching movies,
and also host a VERY low usage FTP server. Does anyone have any
thoughts which would be better?

I would keep the TiBook. I have an iBook and a
Quicksilver that I use for different purposes, but if
you are only doing what you describe then you will
want to keep your portability. Just MHO.

I had the 520c 68040 I think... and yes we spent a lot of money on the

Seriously, pickup a mac-mini for $500 and have both. You will regret
swapping the powerbook. I had a 520 powerbook (yes an old 68xxx) that
I regret sometimes for selling on E-Bay. I spent more on cables (scsi,
video, serial) then I did for the darn laptop.

Re: Thoughts on a trade

2005-04-04 Thread Brian Stewart
If you need a desktop and you are cash strapped (join the club) I would
pick up an external monitor, keyboard and mouse. The video adapter for
my powerbook was $25.00, a usb keyboard and mouse is another $40. If
you need more room or a better CD burner you can go with external
firewire.

I run the above setup, Fireware drives, usb keyboard/mouse and video
with my powerbook. I also picked up a $40 USB/KVM switch so I can use
my PeeCee and my powerbook. I suspect my powerbook is getting some
PeeCee Cotties even tho I run a recent version of
Bill_Gates_Blocker_2005.

Like I said, I do have a B&W G4 :-)

Re: Thoughts on a trade

2005-04-03 Thread Andrew
Only the obvious that the desktop will be absolutely useless anywhere other
than at a desk. Sounds to me like one of those trades that will be fun for
a few days and that you will deeply regret later on. Specifically, I've
never known anyone to say that they wished their laptop was less portable.

Sorry if this is a bit off topic but I am seeking opinions. I
currently have a Titanium Powerbook 667 I am thinking of trading for a
dual G4-450 desktop. Anyone out there have any thoughts on the
performace difference of the two assuming 768 Mb of RAM in both?
