Re: Tiger onto my iBook
I purchased Tiger and, expectedly, it came on DVD. I have a 700m Mhz, G3 dual USB iBook. I tried to install Tiger on my external DVD drive, but no luck. I couldn't select it as my startup drive in System Preferences. Do you have an iPod? You can use it to install Tiger on your iBook. I believe I saved this from one of the major Mac sites (MacFixIt, etc). ^ Turn your iPod into a bootable Tiger installation disk. Here's how: 1.Make a backup copy of your iPod if necessary (it will be erased in the next step!) 2.Using Disk Utility, format (Erase) the iPod. 3.Use the Restore feature in Disk Utility to create an image of the Tiger DVD on your iPod (drag the DVD into the source textbox; drag your iPod into the destination textbox). 4.You can then plug your iPod in any Mac and launch the Install Tiger software, let it reboot, and follow the instructions to install it! When you're done, you might want to re-erase the iPod, and restore the latest iPod Software on your iPod. (Yep, did this with my iPod mini for my wife's 500MHz G3. Something that's worth mentioning, is that this method (from any Firewire drive, not just an iPod) is better than installing to the computer in question via target disc mode. The installation routine makes many decisions based on the hardware that the installer is being run on, and of course, is blind to any hardware surrounding the drive if you turn your iMac/eMac/iBook in target mode. And AFAIK, you won't even have a usable install if you try to go from one processor family to another. IOW, if you have a G5 and do an install on your G4 iBook in target mode, your installation won't work.) ^ ciao, bob -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Tiger onto my iBook
Hi: I purchased Tiger and, expectedly, it came on DVD. I have a 700m Mhz, G3 dual USB iBook. I tried to install Tiger on my external DVD drive, but no luck. I couldn't select it as my startup drive in System Preferences. I have one last chance at installation, though, as I have a 900Mhz, dual USB G3 iBook with a combo drive and a FireWire. How do I do it? Does anyone know how to link them together by FireWire? Is the combo drive started up in target mode? When do I hold down the T key (I thought that it was the Y-key)? Is there a web page to explain how to do it? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, dmjh -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Boot up the iBook with the CD- ROM to a normal desktop. Next boot the put Tiger DVD in the combo drive and boot that iBook with the T key held down. This will make it appear as a set of external drives that should mount on your desktop. Now select the Tiger DVD as the startup disk and you should be set. Worked 100% on that iMacDV anyways. - Dylan -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Thanks, dmjh Then, assuming you have a regular FireWire cable, boot the one you want to install Tiger on in FireWire target disk mode. Press 'T' right after rebooting and hold T down until you see the the FireWire logo on the screen. Then, reboot your 900MHz, the one with the combo drive, and startup from the Tiger installation DVD. Connect your 700MHz to the 900MHz using the FireWire cable. When you get to the installer, the 700MHz hard disk should be there, with the FireWire icon on it. Proceed with the installation by selecting this drive. If possible, do a clean install or, at least, do an Archive Install. Once the installer has finished, reboot your 900MHz. Right after you hear the startup sound, unplug the FireWire cable from both iBook. Then, press the Power button on your 700MHz iBook. Once the iBook has shutdown, press the power key again and it should boot from your Tiger installation. -Laurent. -- Laurent Daudelin AIM/iChat: LaurentDaudelinhttp://nemesys.dyndns.org Logiciels Nemesys Software mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Netscrape: n.
