VST expansion bay HD - bigger drive inside?

2002-04-04 Thread Gene Wright

Took my VST expansion bay HD apart the other day.

Looks like it is very possible to take out the IBM travelstar 10GB drive
that is in there now and replace it with a 20/30/40 gb version.

Will require the black cover on the bottom of the drive to be pulled
back/off or cut through to get to the screws that hold the HD to the bay,
but big deal, IMO.

Would be nice to put another 30GB drive in the bay and have 60GB total for
~$125 more bucks (since 30 gb drives can be had for about that much these
days .. even 40GB powerbook drives are around $160 now).

Anyone else going to try this?

drive Friday and it works great under 9 and X.

I think we've seen the last of these drives at the sub-$60 price. Any
vendors that still have them--like OfficeDepot.com--are selling them at the
old retail prices (~200 bucks). As many of you have probably noticed,
several of these drives have shown up on ebay in the last couple of weeks,
all them being sold in the $125 area. Bet they are some of the one's from
 the Smartdisk Yahoo store.

They were great prices, but unfortunately it seems as though the likes of
Shoplet and Sparco (who also had the drives) not only sold Smartdisk's
products, they also took customer service lessons from them too (i.e., I've
not had super service from Smartdisk in the past).

I had my order for a 10GB exp bay HD and a 250MB Zip exp bay done and
confirmed by Shoplet on the 22nd, though I got an email from Shoplet a
couple days later saying the exp bay HD was permanently out of stock; same
deal with Sparco, whose real-time availability updating system showed 6 exp
bay HD's still available when I placed my order. They too emailed me a
couple days later saying the item was out of stock.

The only thing I can think of is that mine was an international order, which
usually takes longer to process, though you'd think/hope the store would
hold the items on your order till they got the cc approved. I guess you
can't have everything though: i.e. both low prices and half decent customer
service.

The irony is that when I found the exp bay HD's available at Shoplet, I did
make sure I got my order thru before informing the list, precisely because
there were only a few left. Oh well. Not the end of the world. Now keeping
the eyes open for breaking deals on the web... if anyone gets a whiff, let
us know ;-)

Mine finally arrives this afternoon, although I suspect VST/SD may have
dug a final one up for me because I'm a journo (has its advantages ;-)
They were out and I fired off an email to them. They found one more (and
only one). Hope it's not the one the marketing manager was using on
his/her field trips ;-)

Cheers,

VST Expansion Bay HD - alternatives?

2002-03-27 Thread gd2

Like someone else who posted recently about the VST Expansion Bay 10GB hard
drive, my shoplet.com order was just canceled; the e-mail says that the
manufacturer is no longer making the item.

SO - does anyone happen to have a summarized list of alternatives?

Here's what I know so far (with approximate prices):

MCE expansion bay kit (install your own HD) =$120
PowerBoy USB/FW external drive, bus-powered, install your own HD=$49

Anybody have any other solutions? I'm looking mainly for expansion bay or
Firewire bus-powered drive enclosures; I have a 2.5 HD to put in it.

Thanks -
Gene
