I went for the $69 hinge replacement service (plus $27 shipping) from PB Parts in Scottsdale, Ariz. My Wallstreet G3 returned today, and it's like a new, usable 'puter. The screen won't flop forward or back anymore, which means it's a traveling companion again. Plus, the PBParts people fixed some tiny things for free! I doubted whether I should invest another 90-odd dollars in a 10-year-old G3 Powerbook, but now I am quite glad that I did. My highest recommendation for PBParts to other users plagued by the stupid Wallstreet hinge problem. A note of caution is merited here: I used PBParts to have my hinges replaced, too. Less than a year later, the repair failed. I had to pay for shipping to them, but they admitted it was something we haven't seen before and send it back quickly overnight at their expense. Further, another year later and the hinges are a little wobbly now: I can't keep the lid at less than a 90-degree angle or it'll slam shut (I'd prefer to keep it just a bit open, as I have a 17 monitor behind it which I use instead of the WS's screen). PBParts thinks it's the screen support (not the hinges itself), but has agreed to consider it a repair warranty issue if it needs further work.
