Re: faxing from my powerbook

2005-09-25 Thread John Siple
Modem selection is via the Fax dialog box. If you can't find the
external modem (You're using an external modem?) then I guess you
have a hardware issue. Why not use the internal modem? We're talking
phone modems here, the internal things that connect to a wall phone
connector via the nice little old-fashioned phone wire. We are not
talking about DSL modems connected via ethernet or router of some
sort. If you have a phone wire from you powerbook connected to the
phone connector on your wall and it's a working phone connection your
Mac should find the connection when you're in the fax dialog box.

What powerbook do you have?

What OS are you running?

What are you using for an external modem?

How are you hooking it up?

How are you trying to send the fax?

You'll get better answers with a little more information about your
setup.

to receive faxes you go into the system preferences to the print and
fax panel and tell your computer to receive the incoming fax. It's
pretty cool because you can send the fax do be saved as a file or
printed or both.

That's all with Tiger. Your mileage may vary with Panther or some
such, but I think all of X can do faxes over the internal modem.

If your using Panther, when you open the print dialog box you will see
a button that says fax. That would be the button you want to hit.

Yes

and dial up account to do that?

No

There are ways using the internet, but that involves (in every case I
know) an account ($$) with a service such as efax. The powerbook
does that for free - included in OS X, at least panther tiger.
Make as if to print (command-p) and then search around the print
dialog box somewhere there is a fax option. I just found it in the
PDF menu in Tiger. Your machine will just call up the fax number at
the other end, so no dialup account is needed, but you will pay long-
distance charges if it's not a local call.

Is pretty easy. Depends a bit on your OS.

Running Tiger you can fax via the print menu. Take any document on
