I have gotten quite a number of printers that the local Salvation Army
would toss out. They'd stick them on the shelves with a piece of tape
on them marked "Works" and when they didn't sell they'd simply toss
them.
I might have to post the list of tem one day.

Quartz Extreme
Mac OS X v10.2 introduced Quartz Extreme: graphics processor (GPU)
acceleration for the Quartz Compositor. With Quartz Extreme, no
central processor (CPU) cycles are utilized for scene composition.
Quartz Compositor runs using the graphics processor (GPU) by
encapsulating each rendered backing store in an OpenGL texture map or
surface. The GPU then composes the surfaces and maps to provide the
final image, which is delivered to its frame buffer.
Quartz Extreme only uses OpenGL commands, and requires a graphics card
connected to an AGP 2X or faster bus (including AGP 4X, 8X, and PCI
Express), supporting textures and maps of arbitrary size, since many
of the renderers have no size limitation (Quartz 2D for example).[4]
It is automatically enabled on Mac systems with one of the following
types ofgraphics cards:[5]
• AMD (ATI) Radeon, AGP-based, 16MB VRAM minimum, or better
• NVIDIA GeForce2 MX, 16MB VRAM minimum, or better
Quartz Extreme is not the same as Quartz 2D Extreme, which is optional
GPU acceleration for the Quartz 2D renderer. Further, any GPU that is
capable of rendering Core Imageinstructions is also capable of Quartz
Extreme.

Using a PCI video card in an AGP Mac will kill off Quartz Extreme
acceleration for both cards unless you enable it with PCI Extreme 3.1.
It's normally better to get one good AGP card that has enough
horsepower and VRAM for two monitors.

Re: Titanium 400Mhz Powerbook won't start

2008-12-24 Thread jonas ulrich
This may be totally unrelated, but my old 12in G4 Powerbook came with a 45w
power adapter, and my new 15in came with a 65w power adapter. None of those
sites with the melted powerbooks say which tibooks those are. One of the
known problems with these machines is the screen hinges, as you know.
Another problem is the trackpad cable. It is pinched in the frame and
sometimes short out. There are sites that show how to fix this problem
though. The tibook that I had would get so hot that it would burn any bare
skin. Oh hey i just found a site that sells 65w power adapters for your
exact laptop.

I've always used the camera to format mine...I've heard of people

In theory, you can run as many video cards as you have slots.

A long time ago I saw an article that listed the total pixel limits in
OS X, limiting you, effectively, to three monitors, but that was a
long time ago.

2008-12-24 Thread MIKO ..

Yes, using WDS, supposedly- but I have followed the exact correct
procedure to set up WDS with one machine joining the main station
network and extending the network- but there has always been a problem
with what happens when a Mac connects to the machine close to the
remote base station (non-main station): I constantly see problems
with successful IP address assignments coming back from the main base

Here's my situation... I have an Airport Extreme with an Airport

my home network as well as plug the USB printer into "another
device" ... and since the Airport express is so close in price to an

What say you?

Have you tested your RAM lately?

Blown the dust out of the RAM and PCI slots?

Maybe removed the battery for a 10-20 minute period, replace and
startup anew.

Strange Video card behavior

2008-12-24 Thread Len Gerstel

This is a strange one. After doing all the below, I am guessing it is
pram battery related. I had a power failure at work and the date went
back in time so I have a pram battery on order from OWC that should
be here soon.

I have a DA with a modded (pins 3 and 11 taped) genuine Mac, not a
flashed pc, Radeon 9600 Pro driving my monitor. I also had a pci Rage
128 installed as an emergency back up in case of problems with the
modded card.

I pulled the Rage to put into a Sawtooth that I was setting up. On
the next start up of my DA, I got no video from the AGP Radeon, but a
completely normal start up and then shut down by keyboard commands.
Tried resetting pram and even pressing the cuda, but still no video
out on the AGP Radeon. I have not reset the openfirmware.

Put the Rage back in and started up off that with regular video out.
Immediately shut down, hooked the monitor up to the Radeon leaving
the Rage installed and got normal video out on the Radeon.

Shut down, pulled the Rage and restarted with no problems and video
out on the Radeon.

This has happened three days in a row. Today, same thing. Normal
startup, just no video out on the Radeon. As a test, I installed the
Rage card, but left the monitor hooked up to the AGP Radeon. With the
pci Rage installed, but nothing hooked up to it, I got a normal
startup with video out on the Radeon.

Thanks,
Len

Scanning the System.log in console, I don't see any errors related to
video, but I am including the possible error messages that I can make
out from the log:

From first start up with no Rage installed and no video out on the
Radeon:

My parents use a PSC 1315 at their house on windows. It is indeed a
pita. They've had constant trouble with it's drivers not loading for
everybody. I've had no trouble with it when I used it on my iBook, but
then I only had one user account.

IF ... and only IF you can get the drivers installed and you only have
yourself, the PCS works very well.

However the printers I've had myself I never had any problems. My
first printer was a Deskjet 550. then up to 613C. then to 850c.

I now have a Deskjet 990cxi and a Deskjet 5650. The only real problem
that I have is the 990 leaks. Otherwise the 990 works wonders from an
airport express. The 5650 I keep connected directly to my main
computer. I have a doublesided printing module installed, and I keep a
photo ink cartridge so that I can print off scans from my flatbed
scanner.

Obviously there can be chances that you could get an equally bad HP as
with a Canon or Epson. I have a Stylewriter 1200 that is still
chugging along.

Really depends on the quality of the materials used to make the
printer and how well they develop the driver. As with the previous
posters Photosmart and my parents PSC, HP's all-in-one software for
these two models is nothing to write home about.

Curious question: How does Epsons or Canons AIO software and drivers
compare to HP's?

Re: Which printer do you like?

2008-12-24 Thread Jeff Bequette
As a johnny-come-lately to this discussion, I come down on the HP
side with caveats. I currently run two printers, a HP Photosmart
2610 5-in-1 (print/fax/scan/copy/photo and a Canon i860 which was
purchased first, to go along with a new digital camera in 04. The HP
came home when the better half wanted some copying and fax
capability. Little did we know what a journey we embarked on. the
Canon is now hooked up to the airport and works flawlessly, as long
as it is fed. The HP is now hooked up straight to main computer,
dual G5 1.8 (june '04, running 10.4.11). What took almost 6 months
to discover was the inability of the 2610 to work its multiple
functions on a family computer set up for fast user switching. That
is when it came off the Airport and was plugged in directly. Then
last time I tried to scan/OCR some data in, hp wanted me to
deinstall, reload and reinstall the drivers-EACH & EVERY time someone
else used the computer.(on the 4 users who wasn't the main guy) That
was about 6 months ago and I haven't seen lately if they have
upgraded the support/driver. It boils down to failure of my
researching the product and the salesman's level of knowledge when I
described what I wanted to do.

I realize both my printers are aged things now, but until I know
things will change for the better that is where I am stuck. Enjoy
the quality of both and the ability to print to photo paper.
