External drive to boot iMac G5 - recommendations?

2009-01-18 Thread Aaron

A friend of mine has an iMac G5 (iSight, i think!) and needs an external drive
that can be used as a boot drive. (He'd probably prefer it to be at least 500
GB, but that's not essential.)

I know that it has to be connected via FireWire, rather than USB. Aside from
that, and the fact that most Western Digital My Book models can't boot a PPC
Mac, I haven't got much idea what to recommend. Since his internal drive is not
working (whether it's fixable or not without replacement is not clear), he
would like to get an external bootable drive very quickly, which means probably
from a store rather than via the Internet. He lives in Oakland, California
(very near San Francisco), so there are plenty of stores!

I was thinking of lending him (or selling him) my 250-GB MiniStack, but I'd
have to spend time copying my files to another drive before installing an OS on
it. It would probably be better if he could just quickly buy a new drive that
would be likely to work and be reliable.

Please Bcc responses to my email address, so that they'll wind up in my inbox
where I'll be sure to notice them.

TIA,
Aaron

P.S. He'll be running Tiger, not Leopard, since he needs Classic compatibility.

Re: Seagate HD firmware update

2009-01-18 Thread Paul

I think that you could update the firmware without changing any data
on the drive. But I don't know enough to tell you not to back up your
data.

The announcement said "Seagate has isolated this issue to a firmware
bug affecting drives from these families manufactured in December
2008." That would seem to narrow the field of eligible drives quite a
bit.

Re: Awaken w/User Choice

I installed a little application called "Ciao"

on the "family" computer in the living room. It uses the sleep timer
to not log out, but to go to the login window. This way, if my wife
leaves the banking application running, and the kids unshackled, they
can't arrange a trip to the North Pole on their own. Conversely, if my
wife wants to continue working, she needn't log in and start all the
applications up again. Works good.

With "Require password to wake..." checked (Security system prefs),
in Tiger, the dialog presented has a "Switch Users" button. Pressing
that will bring up the full login dialog. Does Leopard not do this?

He can go to one of the Fry's Electronics stores in the Bay area to buy, or
go online to order for same day delivery, their following one-week special
external harddrive:

A few months ago, I bought from Fry's a similar but smaller drive, which has
worked perfectly with my iMac G5 (20", iSight). It came with a five-year
warranty.

Yes, I know it's no longer supported as it was last updated in 2003
circa 10.3/Tiger, and I'm wondering if anyone has any knowledge that
the application no longer works accurately in Leopard since 10.5 was

Personally, I would never trust such. "Average" usage is not a good

You may need to add/re-add the FW extensoons for OS 9; I had to do
that on my 7600, when I added a FW card. A custom istall will let you

The only third-party Ethernet adapter which is universally accepted
by MacOS is the R8169.

You can get those for $8.99 ($2.99 when on sale) at Fry's Electronics.

The 8169 code has been built into MacOS X since at least 10.3.

There is a 10.2 driver available, and also a a MacOS 9 driver available.

80 or 30GB ipod

2009-01-18 Thread KP

Right now I have about 2/3 of my music on my laptop and it is taking
up 7.83GB and it will continue to grow. These are at a pawn shop and
they are the only two available there. I am leaning toward the 80
because of the idea that I can use it for extra space if necessary,
but will I ever use the extra. So it's like $50.00 for an extra
flash-drive. The 30GB is newer and so I guess my question should be
"is there any advantages, such as newer software on the 2007 iPod than
on the 2005 iPod"? I'm guessing that when either iPod is connected to
my computer with the internet, then the they should update to the
newest software. Am I correct?

Maybe somebody else has a more fine-tuned suggestion, but here's at least an
approximation:

Keep Activity Monitor open with the "System Memory" button highlighted and look
at the info in the lower left corner of the window occasionally, especially
when your system is acting sluggish. If the total of "Free" and "Inactive"
memory frequently gets close to 0 MB, more memory may speed things up.

AFAIK the Realtek 8169 is a PCI adapter, not much use in the OP's iMac.

As to the OP's problem, a USB adapter is your only choice. There are a
number available, such as

A google search on "Mac USB Ethernet" will locate more info.

Do you have an iPod now?

Have you considered all it can do for you? Check out he accessories for it.

Yes pod will update.

If you can afford it the " extra " is well worth it. A year or 2 of
use will have you wondering why you hesitated.

And it will always have resale value.

The drives which were made by Pioneer under an OEM contract for Apple
do not have all the features of the retail Pioneer drive.

Some of the features which are, or may be missing, include:

1) support for DVD-RAM (but such media may be supported as read-only),

2) front bezel and eject button,

3) tray front,

4) activity light, and

5) support for a wider variety of recordable media (may be
artificially limited to a lower recording speed and/or some common
media vendors may be ignored).

Many of the Pioneer drives have so-called hacked firmware, which can
restore many of the functional restrictions imposed on these OEM drives.

For example, if the Pioneer firmware is 1.37, look on the 'Net for
8.37 firmware.

8.37 firmware was released for the BenQ version of the Pioneer drive,
and this firmware supports many more functions, and full recording
speed over a wider list of media.

Drives which are labeled Pioneer, but which were made for Sony,
cannot be FLASHed ... these are permanently "locked" to Sony firmware.

You cannot tell a Sony OEM drive from a Pioneer OEM drive, or,
indeed, from a Pioneer retail drive, without accessing the firmware
using DVRFlash_2.2.

With specific reference to (2), above, some Pioneer OEM drives have
the eject microswitch physically missing. Such drives may only be
ejected logically, using the keyboard action.

For some reason all my songs in iTunes are not there. They are in

G'day George.

You're a bit vague on where exactly you want your music to be, or what
you're trying to actually do.

If iTunes is set to import /copy new tunes, and organize them, then
User/Music/iTunes is the default storage location.

Santa

The default location for an iTunes Library is ~user/Music, so if your
iTunes folder is shown there, and the subfolders are all present then
you've still got the music where it belongs.

> Is there anyway to move them all over at one time?

To "move them all over" I think you mean get iTunes to recognize them
again? You can drag & drop the any files not recognized in iTunes
either onto the iTunes icon either in the Dock or the Applications
folder; or into the Library or Music folder of the lefthand side
toolbar in the open iTunes application window.

If none of your music is shown in iTunes, just drag & drop the entire
~user>Music>iTunes>iTunes Music folder back into iTunes and it will re-
recognize the entire folder. You don't want multiple copies of music
on your HD, so be careful.

Multiselect the files and drag n drop tjhe traditional way. Hold down
the command or option key ( can't remember which ) and keep clicking
til folders or files are all selected and then drag and drop anywhere
youu want them.

Be sure to adjust iTunes settings to know where you want it to find
and write files.

That's the right idea.

If your Inactive and Free pools are *both* small, under 10MB each,
then you need more memory.

If your Inactive or Free pools are large, then you have memory
sitting around unused.

Back in April 2008, we had a very good thread on g3-5 that covered
all this; subject "Memory Allocation". Also search on "Virtual
Memory" in the LEM lists.

Re: iTunes files disappeared

2009-01-18 Thread Kyle Parish

On itunes if there is a letter typed in the search bar on the top
right hand corner than only the songs that start with that letter will
appear in you iTunes library. If there are multiple letters typed in
the search bar and none of your songs begin with those letters than
nothing will appear. Make sure all the letters in the search bar on
the top right have been deleted.
