Cursor gone wacko

2009-01-28 Thread D Stubbs
This morning as I was browsing suddenly the entire screen started moving
with the mouse, screen shifts about 1" in any direction. Also the top or
bottom bar, and right or left side are now hidden - only brought in to view
by moving the mouse. It's all 'functional', but it's shortly going to make
me go batty watching it all move constantly. I double checked my screen
setting, its still 1280x1024
Tried both restart and shut down, no improvement

OS 10.4.11
usb overdrive
microsoft optical mouse
Del trinitron 19" screen - I double checked its 'size, center, geometry'
settings and all looks fine

Any ideas where I start to look?
thanks, before I go wacko too!
Del

The CD2200E is from way, way back in the 4416E days ... a
contemporary of the last of the pre-G3 PPC Macs and the first G3 PPC
Macs (the "S" version would apply to the pre-G3 Macs, whereas the "E"

As I recall, it is a CD-R-R/W drive, and not a DVD drive, hence
PatchBurn wouldn't help.

It should be seen by Toast, however, as a CD burner.

That's what Patchburn for 10.3 would help it do, if I'm not mistaken.

It helped me on a PPC 8500 under Xpostfacto & Panther 10.3.9 with a
Yamaha CDRW.

Could be mistaken ... its been awhile since I used it to fix the burn/
vis-ability.

Given that MRI systems have hard drives inside of them, and we have
computers within 15 feet of high frequency (and hence high powered

leads me to believe that this wouldn't be so reliable :-)

On the other hand, these systems are just fine and dandy for

That's a VERY embarrassing situation to be in, when you're standing at

If you have ever taken a close look at the construction of a modern hard
drive, you will notice that inside the hard drive itself there are two
EXTREMELY POWERFUL small magnets. These function within centimeters of
the platters themselves, yet we retain our data. I realize that the
magnetic fields in an MRI are orders of magnitude stronger, but the main
reason that the DOD an other bodies require multiple erasure and
re-writes, is because the data will survive until it has been
effectively overwritten. And if it survives, it can be accessed. In my
training school I saw an instructor wipe and re-write a hard drive
twice, install an OS (Solaris 2.5 to be specific), and was still able to
retrieve part of a text file. Ya just can't kill some files. That is
why some agencies of the US government are now requiring that their old
drives be shredded. But, since a gentleman in NZ just found US Army
data on an MP3 player he bought used, it sounds like that rule is being
ignored also. Peace, Dennis in Edna, TX

IIRC the NMR spectrometer I worked around had a hard disk drive, the
kind you loaded a stack of 12" (or so) platters into. Very Retro. The
drive was on the far end of the console from the magnet.

And watch out that the NMR doesn't suck the keys right out of your
fingers. I heard stories about that. I did see one quench once, kind
of spectacular.

The safety issue aside (google comes up with some very cool pics of
things "stuck" to MRI machines!)... it wouldn't work. The erasure
would be inconsistent, leaving a high likelihood that at least some
data could be recovered.

I don't think you can get the processor too cold to work. Have you
heard about the extreme overclockers? From a slashdot.org summary:

> During CES a group of overclockers with access to liquid nitrogen

That is -385 degrees F. So the extra few cooling degrees offered by a
better heat sink will not hurt your chip. On the contrary, the extra
cooling will actually help the chip.

Old facility - every door required a key card. But for some silly
reason these weren't your normal mag strip key cards. They were
thick things, with magnets in them! If you put them in your wallet,
your cards were toast! Ok, so you put them on a chain around your
neck then looked like an idiot kissing the wall to get in the door.
Then the practical jokes started... slip a card under someone's butt
as they're sitting down - so much for their credit cards.

How can one say for sure? It's entirely possible, unless he owns a tv
show. In addition I do know that there was one dvd ripping software
which was banned from being sold in the US because it successfully
decrypted protected DVDs, doing such is indeed illegal.

Yep, got one holding about 20 sheets of paper on my fridge right now.
It's our 'Recipe Book', when we find a cool recipe online, I print it

Re: Good dvd ripping software??

2009-01-28 Thread Nikki Wraith

The issue is simple. While it is indeed legal for you to posess a
"back up" copy of a commercially produced DVD that you have purchased,
it is NOT legal to break the copy protection on said DVD. Thank your
Senators and representatives for that little catch 22.

Yahoo! Widget Woes

2009-01-28 Thread Michael McMurtrey
i downloaded and installed a Yahoo! widget. It did not work as
advertised, so I uninstalled it following Yahoo!'s own instructions.
Now, however, every time I start my computer a Yahoo! Konfabulator
license announcement appears. Clicking the "Cancel" button makes it
go away, but I want to permanently remove it. A search for
Konfabulator on my system turns up nothing, and as I have Verizon
Yahoo! email, I'm afraid to just start arbitrarily deleting Yahoo!
files. What do I need to delete to get this stinkin' thing off my
computer?

Computer is a beige G3 running OS 10.4.11.

Thanks.

I think you're thinking of DeCSS
which was declared illegal because it was a DMCA violation, but since
the source code is protected under free speech, I can wear a T-shirt
with the code printed on it, or express it in any of a variety of
methods

See here, with the source code ASCII-arted into a DVD logo

Problem #1: you installed some crap from Yahoo. Betcha won't do THAT
again ! :-)

They have THE most annoying shite that burrows, parasite-like onto
systems, mostly PC but also, as you've found, the Mac as well.

I've seen poor unfortunate PC victims fire up IE to have half the

Look in your startup items in the Accounts preference pane in System
Prefs. Note, unchecking something there only affects the visibility,
not whether it's there or not,. select it and click the small - sign
under the list.

Next look in /Library/Startup Items, it should be obvious there.

There are a few other places to hide stuff in startup mode but those
two should cover it.

Yup, that's what I was thinking of. If you can "express" the source
code in any fashion due to free speech, doesn't that mean one should
be able to "express" the source code in the form of binary machine
code in retail packaging? It seems like this is another case of the
law stepping in and infringing on our right to free speech.

D-Link DNS-323 -- any users?

2009-01-28 Thread Steve R

My D-Link DNS-323 NAS Dual drive enclosure arrived today, and I'm
busily going over the information I'd already read prior to ordering
the unit. However, I thought I'd ask here if anyone already has set
up this unit for OS X Leopard and if they have any tips/cautions that
I should be aware of before starting? I plan on using it as two
separate drives with iTunes server, BitTorrent, storage and possibly
playing with the Fun plug-in everyone is raving about on the forums.

I'm guessing that the above is John speaking, not Dan, but sort of,
yes. Data is recoverable off of hard drives, forever is a long time
though. I would not reccomend to sorts of data recovery we're talking
about here as an archival medium.

That said, if a hard drive contains research data it would cost a
rival several million dollars to duplicate, spending a couple of grand
on some disk forensics is cheap.

The UA does it because we're obligated by state law to prevent
personal or confidential data from being disseminated. We do a hell of
a lot better than most folks, though:

They found data off of reformatted drives they bought on the open
market, using commonly accessible tools to do it.

Simson Garfinkel quite literally wrote the book on Unix and internet
security:

This has been the bible of unix security for over a decade now.

That said, the Internet Archive uses hard drives and DLT tape

Kodak Printer?

2009-01-28 Thread starrf...@valley.net

I saw a TV ad that got my attention, though I am usually skeptical of
such things. It was a Kodak multifunction printer (copier and fax)
for about $100. What grabbed me is the claim that ink for this
printer was much cheaper than for others, like a third the price or
better. Like 3 times as many pictures for the price. I've used Epson
for years and have been using aftermarket inks to make printing
affordable. (Some brands are actually ok.)

The Kodak brand interests me too. I bought a very cheap Kodak camera
for my wife and was pretty impressed with the handing and output. So
maybe they know how to make printers too.

Any experience with Kodak printers, especially the less expensive
models? Reasonable ink prices?

Rich

Steve,
I don't have experience with this box but I did just install a Ximeta
Netdisk drive enclosure which is usb and ethernet. I have an older
Airport extreme which connects to my MacBook and a G4 tower. The
airport and G4 are connected to the airport via ethernet through a
switcher.

The Netdisk enclosure is PATA, not SATA, T100 not gigabit, has usb2
connectivity as well as ethernet. It only cost me only about $30 so
the older drive type and slower connectivity is less of a problem than
if I had spent big bucks. (Actually only the switcher and G4 can
handle gigabit...the Airport can't, so the MacBook doesn't either.)
One big advantage of this little drive is that it works fine with Mac
formatted drives as long as there are no PCs looking at it.

I think NAS is really interesting so I thought I'd reply to your
message with my experience. I'm interested in how yours works out.

I have about 50,000 photos on the drive and it is ok for iPhoto on the
MacBook through the Airport, just a little slow. I expect to add an
iTunes library soon. The T100 system is fast enough to support that.

The big problem for me is that the drive appears on either the MacBook
or the G4 but not both. The software isn't suppposed to allow read/
write access on any but one computer on the network. All others
should be set up as read only, which is a disadvantage in itself.
But the other computer won't even display the drive. I have a support
question in to Ximeta but haven't heard anything yet.

Anyone with experience with this kind of system? Comments? Please
feel free to open another thread.

Rich

What File System on a G3?

2009-01-28 Thread rogerthebassplayer

Hey, how we doin here, folks!

I have an old G3 that does not power-on anymore, and I've removed the
HD and wish to get files from it into my Windows XP machine.

I have an I/O Magic USB HD case installed with the HD in question in
it. My question really is how do I get the Windows file system (NTFS)
to 'see' the Mac file system?

I have also installed a demo version of "Partition Magic", as I was
told by a guy at I/O Magic Support that it would be able to convert
the HD to another (NTFS I guess) file system.

Does anyone have the technical savvy to help me get the files out of
the Mac's HD into Windows? Thanks for your time.

If all you want to do is reformat it, Windows should let you do that.

what software? The printer drivers or the extra crap that all of these

I always strive to just install the needed drivers when I install

I have a Ximeta 320GB drive that I'm using right now as NAS. Have you
downloaded the most recent NAS Utility 1.8.1/Leopard for it? It used
to be, when I first got it, that it has to be formatted FAT-32 for
NAS and it would only mount on one Mac at a time (and could be
mounted on Windows while mounted on the one Mac) but this most recent
Utility allows it to be formatted Mac, and mounted on more than one
Mac at a time. The read/write on one Mac only still applies. I
regularly mount read/write on one Mac and read on the other. I've
also had a third iBook mounted read only. Don't forget the order --
computer on, NAS on, NAS Utility on the read/write computer to mount,
then the NAS Utility on the read computer to mount. To unmount the
drive, it has to be Ejected first and then Unmounted through the NAS
Utility on each computer.

I just got a VOX NM1 enclosure only, from Geeks.com for $24, another
$70 for a 500G drive and I had a NAS system up and running pretty
quickly.

Geeks doesn't seem to have it anymore.

It's strictly a SMB file server, but I've been able to connect
multiple macs to it simultaneously.

Documentation is full of the usual Chinese-to-English through the
'Fish stragenesses, but they give equal weight to both Macs and PC's,
wonder of wonders.

It doesn't always show up in the network browser, for some reason, not
sure where the problem lies, but since I gave it a fixed address on my
cable router, I can mount the volume, drag it to start-up items in
accounts and it comes right up.

This is, however based on less than a week of usage...

Yes, I have the latest software. I think what you describe works here
but it is very tedious. What I like about the drive is that it just
appears on the MacBook when I open it. Simple and easy. So it really
works for me and if I need it on the G4 I can just go USB since it
lives on the same desk. I just hope they find a way to make it RW for
everything on the network. We'll see what they say if/when they
respond to my inquiry.

Thanks,

Re: What File System on a G3?

Hey Bruce,

Thanks for the reply. I've downloaded MacDrive, and it's installed. I can
now see the "G" Drive, which is the one in the USB case I got from the G3.

I'm trying to get images from the Mac HD to a folder on a Windows drive, and
the .jpg images don't display, nor do they open in Irfanview- what I use for
a photo editor. Any clues on using this app to make that happen? I don't
know if I should try and move them without re-naming them first- or should
I?

Thanks for your time,

Rog.

You are a brave man Bruce. I bought that drive after trying the
Ximeta hoping it would be a little better. The price was great even
if you just used usb and firewire. It promises being able to add
another drive to the network via usb and to function as a printer
server. Great for $30. But I couldn't get anywhere with the docs.
I read somewhere that the setup had to happen on Explorer and no other
browser and that was true, but I couldn't get the settings right.
Very strange. So I gave it to our I.T guru and we'll see what she can
do with it. Maybe she can check with you if she needs help.

Re: What File System on a G3?

2009-01-28 Thread Doug Burton
Make sure you are trying to open the actual file and not the ghost
file which is created by the Mac OS. I know this from using a Mac
file server and my Windows machines on the network. The ghost file
should appears as almost grayed out in Windows file explorer. These
files may be either zero byte files or very small in size. These
files create havoc when I copy files to my MP3 player from a Mac
running OS X. HTh

Assuming you can network between computers on the LAN, I'm wondering
if maybe a script could be written that would change the read/write
on A computer when you are wanting read/write on B computer? I'm not
a scripter, never tried Automator and I'm wondering if the app that
Bruce posted earlier this week (and another lister's BF wrote for WoW
use) could be used to put a GUI to the script?

2006 eMAC won't boot

2009-01-28 Thread Joseph Getchel

Some advice please: I have a 2006 edition eMac (with SuperDrive) that will
not boot up and run. It locks up either as it is booting up or just after
completing bootup. I have tried wiping the HD and re-installing (OSX.4.11),
but the same symptoms. I can get it to boot up and run if I boot into safe
mode (single-user mode).
So, when I look inside the computer at the motherboard, I see that many of
the electrolytic capacitors are oozing light brown gunk. I checked the
Apple Warranty Extension program a month ago, and the Serial Number of my
computer is not on the list for motherboard replacement under this program.

Since this computer is just a little more than 2 years old, I am upset that
it is failing in this way. How do I go about convincing Apple that this
computer should be covered by their WEP?

Joe G.

Upgrading or replacing G4 dual processor 867 MHz MDD?

2009-01-28 Thread mkehoe

I am wanting to begin simple video editing of some 1 hour long music
videos. I have OS 10.4.11, and 1,75 G of memory. I've read some about
Power Mac G 5 models. and wonder what would give me the most upgrade
for the money ... to buy a used G 5 (and if so, which model and amount
of processing power) or upgrade my current computer (if possible).

Thanks for any advice ...

What do you mean by "picture"?

Whatever you mean, if it's digital data and smaller than the capacity
of the disc, you can burn it.

Huh? How big is your HD? A CD is only 700MB, it seems unlikely you
could burn your HD to CD? Perhaps you could back a HD up to DVD,
especially a dual-layer DVD, but again, the best backup is a full
backup on another HD.

I'm sure someone has one, look on eBay or LEM-Swap list. You'll
probably need PatchBurn also. I don't see why you'd want to shop used
when new ones are less than $20 and support newer media types, plus
they burn faster. This one was posted recently for $17.99 NEW, I'd
surely think about this in preference to used ones.:

My 2005 G5 wasn't covered under a similar extended warranty for
defective power supplies. It was two weeks outside the group. It was
also two years old (outside of warranty) when it was opened used for
the very first time. It failed with less than 1 week usage. I
mistakenly thought it was covered by the warranty, I mistook a numeral
"6" in the serial for an "8" and that was the "two weeks" that
disqualified mine.

I'd made a Genius Bar appointment thinking it was covered. The nearest
Apple Store was about 65 miles away, and was brand new. When I
arrived, the store was completely full of customers, and the wait was
long even though I had an appointment. When the Apple Geniuses showed
me that I'd mistakenly wrote the wrong serial by a single digit, and
that disqualified my "new" G5, I got mad. I'd previously had a 500MHz
iBook fail just barely outside an extended warranty zone, and Apple
tried to charge me $75 for a "phone consultation" to tell me there was
nothing they could do for my iBook's display issues.

I raised my voice pretty loudly inside this packed Apple Store,
pointing out how pristine my G5 was (obviously no usage) and how I'd
already felt cheated on the iBook issue before, and somehow a miracle
occurred and the Apple Geniuses became reasonable and said I was
right, and they'd fix my G5 for free.

Unfortunately, the repair was not correct the first time, and I had to
make several round trips to eventually get this fixed, taking nearly a
month, and costing me over $100 in gas, toll and parking fees. Still,
the receipt said the repair would have cost nearly $1,000 if they
weren't covering it.

My suggestion. Don't phone, they ask for a credit card and try to bill
you for doing nothing. I suggest going to an Apple Store at the very
busiest time (I went Sunday afternoon near closing) and be prepared to
raise your voice if necessary. Have a printed copy of the extended
warranty program with you, it lends credence to your claim, and makes
a good prop to waive around so the customers can see your claim is
based upon a "known issue".

3rd party mouse/keyboard?

2009-01-28 Thread Jeffrey Engle

True or false - any keyboard/mouse will work on a mac (emac in my
case) as long as you can plug it into a USB receptacle (I may need to
use a USB adapter).

True.

You only need the vendor's software to make their special features
work. eg: on my Logitech keyboard there are a bunch of programmable
non-standard buttons on the left and right side of the keyoard.
Logitech's software is required to be able to access them.

See also the keyboard and mouse thread on this list from just a few days ago.

In another thread, since someone asked about/got referred to
Logitech's LCC ... I thought I'd ask again myself.

Where are the details for re-making (workaround) the LCC Logitech
software you suggest above, say, for Leopard 10.5.4 or so?

I'd like to re-instate my wireless KB and Mouse to my Music Studio's
Quicksilver Dual 1GHz that I am now having very little problems
with ...

Thanks.
