I'd look into hubs, both USB and FW. You can't remover the drivers for
the onboard ethernet, your Rosewill card uses the same ones, iirc.
(It's a realtek-based card, isn't it?)

The issue, as always, when something gets fried on a logic board, is
what else was damaged by the voltage spike.

Sadly, this is a simple but expensive thing to check...just get a
known-good logic board and swap it in.

Onboard ethernet got zapped a year ago. Used a USB Wireless for
awhile. Then moved to my NIC a month ago. One USB port in the back of
the QS is a bit loose, but seems to hold its own for now. All USB/FW
onboard ports are working. I needed extras for other devices,
currently not connected.

Anything I might do to remove any dependence on trying to startup the
onboard ethernet?

I'm able to go into IONetworkingFamily.kext and remove the
Plugin(s) ... well with some refresher help.

The Rosewill NIC uses the Realtek 8169 plugin supplied by Apple.

I experimented with the other M-Audio card being alone, and in a

Thanks.

Just replaced the PRAM Battery (had a new one lying close by), and did
the CUDA (although I think removing the battery does that too?)

First Startup and the M-Audio driver didn't load.

AppleJack is next.

Is something wrong with the onboard ethernet, FW and USB?

My first inclination would be to temporarily remove the NIC and the
Sonnett card, and see if you get the kinds of problems you're seeing.

Then I'd move the M-audio card to another slot to see if it IS the slot.

I don't know how much current the M-Audio card pulls, it's possible
that you're skating close to some limit or another.

See what happens if you remove the other cards. If it still happens
it's either the drivers or something flaky with your logic board.

Just thought that might indicate an Installer bookkeeping problem on m-

they Install, could they be installed incorrectly?

That was just a test I would use if I were their programmer.

OS X 10.5.6 1.5GB SDRAM (2 new from OWC, 1 old from DMS ... all 512

AGP Slot1 ATI Radeon 9800Pro Mac Edition
PCI Slot2 empty (for air circulation around the video card)

Everything works fine in 10.5.6 before the M-Audio drivers try to kick
in. Ran for about a week before the replacement audio card arrived and
I installed the drivers. Week of light duty use ... but multiple Cold

Could my PCI bus be flaky?

AHT runs and tests the mobo ok.

Re: Help! I've lost one harddrive and now the main harddrive won't boot!

2009-03-18 Thread Janine

Hi All - thanks for your advice.

I think it's definitely a corrupted system problem. Tried to do an
Archive and Install and the problem got worse, to the point where Disk
First Aid has gone from saying there is nothing wrong with the disk,
to saying it cannot be repaired! Yuck!

>From the OS X install disk, I can select OS9 on my computer as a
startup disk and it starts and loads fine, with all files present and
everything functioning. OS X won't load and now I just get a blue
screen (before I was getting my custom desktop picture and the dock
and file headers)

I have ordered an upgrade for my Disk Warrior, and will just have to
sit tight until it gets here! I'll be sure to let you know if it
fixes the problem.

BTW - I started to notice little problems with my system after I
installed the last system update from Apple. Has anyone else
experienced problems after that update? Just wondering, because my
system was very stable until then.

No. If the files are being put there by an installer with bad
permissions, then it won't matter how you're booted - the installer
is foo. You can just change the permissions manually. WRT kernel
extensions it really should be moot - they're loaded under root,
which ignores permissions anyway.

The driver package you're installing... how big is it? is it
available for public download?

autoconfigure sequence.

So there's no difference in Ownership or Permissions that might affect
Startup loading, if I install drivers in a Safe Boot versus
"Administrative User" Mode? Maybe not OS X 10.5 - wise, but if the 3rd
party Installer isn't written quite right ... could a difference be

The reason I'm asking ... Their Installer was written to comply with

More so in a warm, Restart.

Funny ... earlier today ... they didn't load on Cold Boot ... but did
so later in the same session ... have 2 Apple System Profiler's to
prove it.

It's the "Plus" file in the M-Audio Forum (go to page 5 ). Sorry
for it being in pdf ... they won't allow spx, although I can trick
their system by calling it a pdf file ... except it has to be less

hum. Hit the CUDA, to restart the power manager after you install
the card. Use AppleJack to clear the kernel caches and rebuild them.

Get rid of auto-login. Having things STOP and display that login

This sounds more like a hardware issue than software. Do you hear any
noises coming out of the monitor or computer when it blinks?

Either:
---
Use Terminal, in a Terminal command line type:
sudo nvram boot-args="-v"

To disable Verbose booting:
sudo nvram boot-args=

---
alternatively, you can set the verbose mode from the Open Firmware
prompt by starting up in Open Firmware by holding the Cmd-Opt-O-F keys
at startup, and then at the prompt, type:

setenv boot-args -v

hitting the Return key after any command. Then type "bye" or "boot"
without quotes to restart.
Similarly, to disable verbose:
setenv boot-args
---

Re: G4 iMac desktop screen keeps redrawing

2009-03-18 Thread Lawrence David Eden
Do you have StuffitDeluxe installed? If the answer is YES, do a
search for Stuffit AVR. If you find it, disable it or delete it and
see if the problem goes away.

I have a G4 iMac, running 10.4.11. In the past week, I have noticed
that the desktop screen keeps re-drawing every few minutes. I ran
Disk permissions and Onyx and I didn't get any negative messages. Any
idea what could be causing the re-drawing?

(i hope I am explaining "redrawing" as the right action. The desktop
blinks and then everything on it appears again.)

verbose mode during startup-sequence

2009-03-18 Thread Lawrence David Eden

Dear List Members,

When I used XPostFacto on my Beige G3, it defaulted to verbose mode;
the start-up sequence was written out so that I could follow each
step while the Mac was booting. Now that I have gone to a B&W, I no
longer need XPostFacto but I would still like to have verbose mode
displayed on my monitor.
I want this to be the B&W's default behavior. How is it done?

The MDD is VERY particular about the version of OS 9.2.2
installed. It MUST be the version that shipped with the
machine. Versions for other G4s will NOT work.

Speaking from experience, trying other versions will give
you nothing but frustration.
