Concerning Core Image Check, I believe adding a Widget to the
Dashboard will give the water ripple effect if Core Image is working?

I's like to know of some other checks if someone could e-mail me

It works fine in 10.4.11. This was just a "bad" update (I think it was
actually the 10.4.4?) that was an "anomoly" for PCI Extreme. It works
fine with 10.4.11, which is the "only" Tiger version anyone should be
using. I don't know about Leopard, I'm skeptical it would work, but
who knows until you try? After all, it's only changing one single line
of a .plist file.

Yes, but if the PCI Radeon 7000's presence is killing off the
acceleration of the 9800 Pro, you're hosed compared to a working AGP
5200. You need to check each display with Quartz Extreme Check 1.2 to
see if Quartz Extreme is working. I don't know of a similar check for
Core Image other than trying something that requires Core Image, there
are several screensavers that use Core Image effects which wouldn't
work if the Radeon 7000 was killing it in the 9800 Pro.

I downgraded my 1.58 GHz Mini from Leopard back to Tiger specifically
because Leopard was sluggish. Benchmark archives for XBench and
Geekbench show about a 20% across the board slowdown for PPC Macs from
Tiger to Leopard, and about a 20% speedup for Intel Macs. I'm using my
PPC Mini as a media center computer, and it can't play HD video
smoothly in Leopard, and just barely in Tiger, but just barely is just
barely good enough. Stick with Tiger.

Try Safe Boot by holding the Shift key at startup. If it starts
normally, reboot, and hopefully it's OK. Safe Boot trashes and
rebuilds the kernel & extensions caches, which should hopefully be all

I'm running 10.5.? (Can't remember which iteration) on a DA 733 and it
is quite usable. It is not way fast, but usable. I would keep 10.4.x
unless Leopard has features you can't live without! ;-)

Probably best at 10.4.11, although 10.5 is also OK.

10.5 is best on dual processors which are significantly faster that
1.0 GHz.

10.5.7 works great on a quad 3.2 Intel and a dual 3.6 Intel in my shop.

Well, FWIW, I used Firefox on 10.4 with no issues whatsoever. I advise
AdBlock+ as a mandatory add-on, to get rid of most banner adverts -
not only do these clutter up a page visually, they slow it down.
FlashBlock is also helpful - Flash isn't quick on an older Mac, though
G4s are less of a problem than G3s, which are crippled by it.

For AJAX apps, like Gmail, you need fast JavaScript. You could try
Firefox 3.5, still in beta but fairly usable, but the fastest JS
implementation on Mac OS X is currently Safari 4. I found Safari 3 to
be clunky and unpleasant but v4 is a lot more usable. With Safari, the
simplest counterpoint to AdBlock+ is Privoxy, which works a treat and
is excellent.

Personally I use 2 browsers at once: I leave Gmail open in Safari (on
Macs) or Chrome (on Windows), and Firefox for all other general
browsing stuff. Then if Gmail is busy, it doesn't slow down your
general browsing.

Personally, although I liked Camino, I see no point any more, as F'fox
3 is pretty seamless on OS X, plus you get add-ins. Same goes for
Shiira and Webkit if you have Safari 4.

The RSS feed hole was patched long ago, and with two changes, the
current Java problem (which is actually in the OS, not Safari) can be
fixed. Turn off Java in the prefs (you can enable it/disable it on the
fly) and uncheck 'open safe content after downloading' which, in my
opinion should NEVER be enabled.

I've been using Safari 4 beta since it's release, and after a few days
of discombobulation with the tabs and such, have come to like it a
heck of a lot.

Coupled with ClickToFlash, it's an unbeatable browser, imo. (CTF is
also under continued development, I just got an update notice this
week.)

Is there a reason not to go to 10.4.11, or is it just that you haven't
done it yet?

Re: iMac G3 500 or G4 Powermac 400?

2009-05-23 Thread Paul

I've worked with both, and the G4 has so many advantages, it's a no-
brainer. You'll need a monitor, but even LCD's are cheap these days,
and smaller good used ones are close to free any more.

And the CRT in the iMac could be on its last legs.

I would probably suspect this as the cause of flaky audio. As time
goes by, the jacks/inserts also corrode, ever so slightly, causing
poor connections and audio drops ... corrosion even while plugged in,
especially if the atmosphere is polluted ... so it could change while
sitting perfectly still ...

I even get this on my Mackie Pro audio board ... gold plated
connectors avoid this. And I live in a small town, "limited
pollution" (still on the planet Earth, though) ... except for the
pollen ...

Unplugging and plugging it back in, sometimes cleans things up ...
although you say its broken off inside ...

That was the only reason I thought it might be the video cards, but
that seems kinda weird to me.

And their website doesn't guarantee anything later than 10.4.3.
Probably don't want to try it on Leopard then, although if I swapped
for the AGP 5200 I wouldn't need a second video card period, but I'm
not really willing to do that since the 9800 Pro is pretty much a
better card all around. Decisions, decisions.

All sounds are gone. I use the volume buttons, no sounds. No noises
for events in Terminal, Thunderbird, MSN or Adium.

Does it in iTunes, QuickTime and Songbird, oddly enough.

Externals plugged into the front headphone jack. I guess I should
have mentioned that the back audio jack has half of an 3.5mm jack
broken off in it, but this had never been in an issue before in the
year or so that I have been using it regularly.

It seems weird to me, too, but that was the only major change that
I've done to the machine in the week or so before it started
happening: adding a new video card and a second monitor.

I did check that, but it seems to be resolving on its own without
having to touch cables.

I do, but they don't seem to have any particular affinity to my
computers other than the little one liking to curl up behind the
exhaust vents of the two PowerMacs under my desk. I'll keep an eye
out for them, though. Never know.

Do you think my kp had to do with the 10.5.7 update and my machine
not being "reset"?

A Safe Boot being the tool to reset it? I might also try doing the
AppleJack auto sequence now that my drive is back ...

I removed the adaptec AUA-3020A NEC Chipset D720101GJ USB2/FW PCI
card, thinking I had just lucked out that it seemed to be working
under 10.5.6 (and my new replacement mobo), but after the 10.5.7
update, the next cold boot gave me the kp. Maybe I'll put it back,
and do the Safe Boot and see what happens next ... didn't someone
mention this chipset and that it had been verified under OS X 10.5 as
working on the xlr8yourmac.com site? I couldn't find it there ...

I was doing the CCC writing to the Docs partition, from its clone
that I had changed Ownership on, so I thought that might have been a
part of the eventual freeze ... but maybe not. The Bombich Forum
hasn't responded to my CCC inquiry there:
