Oh, I'm lazy, rarely make the distinction. If I say GB, gb or Gb in
relation to file or disk sizes assume it's gigabytes, if I'm talking
about networking and comms, it's gigabits. :-)

My backup drive went from 9 gigabytes free to 34 gigabytes free.

Safari should open PDF's in the browser, since 3.0. It will either use
it's built in plugin or Adobe, depending on whether Adobe has butted
in or not.

I actually prefer PDF Plugin, from SchubertIT
, much faster than Acrobloat, much more flexible than the built-in
one. It lets you open forms in Acrobat when needed, preserving the
various automatic stuff you lose by saving it and opening it in
Acrobat form the desktop.

We have a LOT of such forms here on campus that require you to open
them up in the browser to work; Apple's own QT PDF stuff (which the
ShcubertIT plug-in uses) opens some of the forms, but others are
messed up; in the SchubertIT plugin, you can click on the gear button
and open the form in any other program that handles PDF's.

When I download a pdf file and click on it, it opens in preview.
After you do what I previously described, try it out.

Have you tried the VGA port on the TV? I know that when I connected
mine (with a Radeon 9000) to my tv it didn't work at first because the
video was set wrong. I was able to use VNC (I'd previously set it up
for remote control) from my laptop to change the video output to what
my TV (Proscan) used (which is 1024 x 768...the computer detected a
widescreen resolution 13nn x something, iirc, I only saw it flash for
brief moment.)

I was going to try a DVI-HDMI solution when I got around to getting a
cable. Maybe I'll wait to see if you get it working ...

Very useful Applescript

2009-07-24 Thread Bruce Johnson

Cleans up a Mac of user files, and sets it up to run Setup Assistant
when restarted.

This lets you set up a Mac, update it and/or add programs, then hand
it off as 'clean' with no users. Better than simply nuking and paving
it. for institutional or corprate use this is how to pass on a Mac...

I've not even looked at it yet but I feel/know this is going to be good.
I know macs are not as bad as windows in their need for nuke and pave to
get them running faster, but this will come in handy.

Read the articlethis isn't "To make them faster"...this is a
script to prepare a Mac for sale or transfer to another owner.

I've used a DVI-HDMI cable both from a couple of MacBook Pros and from a
G4 Mac Mini. The latter has a Radeon 9200 as the built in video (I
believe it is). In both cases it worked right off with our Philips TV.
It does take a while for the TV and computer to negotiate the screen
size and such but it's no more than 20 seconds.

I agree it could be the wrong video mode and using VNC is the way to
check it. If you have a Leopard machine (besides the one in question) a
VNC client is built in. The VNC server is built in to recent OSX
versions and is activated in the Sharing System Preference.
