I had this problem, just boot into OS9 and run Software Update (Apple
Menu>Control Panels>Software Update>Update Now.) I would also install
the rest of the software in OS9.

installing old software

2009-11-28 Thread Lawrence David Eden
Question: Do I have to boot my G4 in OS 9 if I want to install OS 9
software, or can I simply launch Classic and then install the old
software?

An example of this dilemma: OSX informs me that the version of
QuickTime that I have installed in my Classic System Folder is not
recommended. If I download a newer version of Quick Time, how do I
install it, and will it interfere in any way with OSX?

Thanks,

Larry

Be cautious. OS X locks volumes for specific reasons. In this
particular case - your need to repair the volumes indicates that they
were locked to prevent data from being destroyed. During the time
between when you modified the permissions and when you repaired the
volumes, you were very vulnerable.

Always check your system log. There will be messages there saying
exactly what happened.

Quicksilvers have a second +28V line on pin #9, this pin is not used
on Gig-E or DA G4s. Otherwise the PSUs are pretty much the same, 338 W
vs 344 W in the QS. If you have a Gig-E or Digital Audio PSU and you
want to use it in the Quicksilver you could split the +28V from pin
#22 and splice it into pin #9. The QS also has a 4-pin connector that
the DA doesn't so you might need to splice that piece from the old PSU.

RE: SATA for G4MDD

2009-11-28 Thread Stewie de Young

All good info to know.
> Was told recently I could not use the 2nd port for an internal SATA
> DVD drive. Wondering if this is true?

I think the deal is ( with these cards anyway ) that you can hook up another
hard drive or you can connect a DVD drive but you can't boot from it - just the
first hard drive only.
Kind of negates plugging in a SATA DVD drive if you can't boot from it I guess.
With mine I'm going to retire my 80 Gb IDE drive that I boot from and probably
just go SATA.I'll
keep the Raptor ( 36Gb ) as my boot drive and get something like a 320 or 500Gb
second hard drive for data storage only.
