Snow Leopard and the MBP is an Intel. It just let me write to it..

Humm... it appears that Snow Leopard added the ability to write to
NTFS without any extra software, but it also appears that this
feature was not fully implemented and requires a slight system
modification to enable this "hidden" feature. If you've never
enabled the hidden NTFS writing feature this would appear to be an
anomaly.

I never did any thing with NTFS that I'm aware of, I stay away from
Winbloze like a plague. Maybe just the presence of the drive enabled it?

Yes, you'll definitely need extra software in any OS prior to Snow

While not directly related (or useful) in any way, on the side note of
supporting NTFS file operations on a Mac, the latest Seagate external
hard drives also do this.

Apparently Seagate decided that it was easier to have all their drives
come pre-formated as NTFS and just support using NTFS in OS X than to
maintain a separate line of drives which came formatted as HFS+. I
suppose it does simplify their inventory.

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Family marketing page

It's interesting (to me) how NTFS has been slowly but surely opened up
by persistent reverse engineering.

It's NOT FAT32 file system, it's NTFS file system. In order to write
to an NTFS filesystem with your Mac, you'll need extra software. AFAIK
the best software is "Paragon NTFS 8.0", which is commercial software.
The open source project called "NTFS-3G" is a linux project that has a
native OS X version available for free. The developer decided this
open source was too difficult to support gratis, and created a
commercial upgrade called "Tuxera" which also has a native OS X port.
Because the commercial version is in "competition" with the free
version, finding the correct download link for the free version has
recently become very hard since there's a conflict-of-interest whereby
the developer wants you to buy the "Tuxera" commercial upgrade version
rather than using the free "NTFS-3G" ordinary version. There may be
one or two other commercial solutions, but the final word is that
you'll need to install one of these in order to be able to write to
this NTFS HD.

Here's a download link for the latest NTFS-3G that works for 10.4-10.6

Re: Blue and White G4?

2010-05-18 Thread ah...clem
IIRC, something else to consider is that installing a G4 in the B&W
will reduce the clockspeed of the mobo from 100MHz to 66MHz, and the
processor which gets its clockspeed from the mobo will likewise be
reduced by a factor of 2/3.  so f'rinstance, a 450 G4 pulled from a
yikes would actually run at 300 in a B&W. my memory is fuzzy on the
details, but if you want to read more about it, look on the powerlogix
website, and check the page for their 1GHz G3 ZIF upgrade. FWIW, i
have one of those 1gig G3s in a B&W (because i have an old app runs
under OS9 and requires a native ADB port for a dongle) and it screams.

If I drag the file to the drive it says the drive can't be modified.
If I get info on the permissions it says read only, I find on option to change
to read/write.
If it were my drive and a Mac format I guess I'd just do a CCC and initialize
the drive and then CCC back and ad the new files.
But since this is a 32FAT I'm afraid to do any thing like that as to maybe make

Re: Can I add IR to my Quicksilver?

2010-05-18 Thread Amanda Ward
In my travels to Fry's today, I saw a USB IR adapter. Looked at it and no
operating systems were indicated, tho' it said "Connect your PC with IR" or
something much to that effect. Dunno... forgot the brand name as I was
involved in a minor fender bender in the parking lot. I can go back and look
if'n ya want.

Re: Low End Mac weak on Facebook ! - or not...

2010-05-18 Thread Judith Berkowitz
I just joined this Facebook group.

I hadn't joined the LEM FB group prior to this because I didn't know
about it.
I just joined as member #652.
(I also joined the other LEM group as member #14. Hey, why not?)

I am also a member of Mac|Life and Macworld.
Any other Mac-related FB pages or groups anyone can recommend?

~~~
FWIW, FB has served me well in many areas.
I have organized my high school class for a big collective 60th
birthday party in St Louis.
(The high school isn't in St Louis; it's in Mattoon IL. I am in San
Francisco CA)
I probably have about a third of my classmates as FB Friends.
Without FB this could not have been accomplished.
Classmates have been located whom none of us has heard from for 42
years. They're tickled to hear from old friends after all this time.
It's been fun for everyone, and all are looking forward to the big
party and schmoozing face-to-face with one another.
~~
Besides that, postings on FB are a source for one-stop info
gathering.
People post articles from journals, and there can be much enriching
discussion around the content.
Upcoming meetings are also gathered into one place, even if you have
not RSVP'd yet.
Yes, there is also crap. But it can be "Hidden," "Blocked,"
"Reported," or otherwise ignored.
How does the write error show up? My understanding is that FAT32 lacks
any sort of a file access control other than simple-minded attributes
such as "Read-Only" or "System". So other than having  the directory
or files marked as read-only ... which you should be able to undo
simply by flipping the attribute ... I'm not sure how you could not
have write-access to the drive or file system.
Remember me asking about a squatter page ? The other had no icon in the
Locked drive?
Hi All
I have a Seagate FreeAgent 500 external drive here that a friend wanted me to
I've made the new library put the drive will not let me write to it. It's a
G4 monitor
2010-05-18 Thread Manuel Marques
Hello there!
Yesterday I got a PowerMac G4 "Digital Audio", along with its
corresponding graphite monitor and two 6400/180s totally free (and
they all work, which is excellent!).
However, the monitor starting doing some loud noises sometime after I
turned it on, and it smelled like something had burned there (it might
be burnt dust, as the car seat where it sat in the way home was a lot
dirty when I got the monitor out! - it seems these machines were kept
in storage for a very long time...). This weekend I might open it and
spray some compressed air into it, and see if the problems go away.
But (if I wouldn't ask a question at all, I'd be just bragging about
my conquests :P) do you think the problem is dust-related? Or is it
something more serious? I don't know much about CRTs, but the image
was clear and bright while the monitor was on!
Also, what are the upgrades you recommend to do in the G4? It is the
733 MHz model, with 256 MB of RAM, 60 GB hard drive and a CD-RW. It
has, I believe, a Geforce2 with 32 MB of VRAM (it has a VGA and ADC
connector - at least I think it is ADC, I've never seen one of those,
and it does not look like a DVI connector!). RAM is an obvious place
to start (it takes PC-133 modules, correct?), however I'd like to add
a USB 2.0 card (are they easily recognized by the Mac OS?) and
probably a newer hard drive.
But all of that won't be done right away, as I still need to figure
out how to open the case... :P
Regards,
Manuel Marques
battery charging problem on powerbook g4
2010-05-18 Thread Demetrius
hi there, i could use some help, if anyone has any brilliant ideas...
my  17" (1.67) powerbook isn't charging battery properly, it seems to
keep start and stop charging, as the info at upper right switches from
"not charging battery" to "calculating time to full charge"... i've
only had this cpu a few months, and was using old battery that only
lasted 20 minutes, so mostly was using adapter, but the battery would
charge ok when i depleted it. then last week i got a new 3rd party
battery, did the 'condition' thing: full charge, full drain, repeat
4-5 times, but then yesterday the screen started going very very dark
suddenly and battery did not seem to go past 8% (this is from what i
could tell when i restarted and screen stays bright for a few
minutes.). hooked it up to external screen which works for a minute or
so, then that screen goes black as well. so now using old battery
which has some charge but it's draining, as it tries to chrage then
stops, etc...
any ideas? much appreciated!
RE: Blue and White G4?
2010-05-18 Thread John Ruschmeyer
A minor caveat on installing a G4 in a B&W. Before installing the G4, you
also have to install a firmware patch which removes the block on G4s. Also,
based on a bad personal experience, I'd be wary of installing a G4 from a
Yikes in a Rev. 1 B&W.
Nope. Completely different method of mounting the CPU. What might be
possible is to transfer the entire guts of the G4 into the G3 case but
that's about all. If any of those G3's are still working you could
consider going on ebay and picking up a G4 CPU from a Yikes! as those
will swap right in to a G3 motherboard and they're usually pretty
cheap. You hardly see them over $20 anymore and most of the time they
are under $15.
I have recently aquired a G4 12" iBook. The 'book had syst 10.4.8 on
it but I had no passwords etc. so I deceided to re-install the same
system using the disks that i had and had used on various other
computers including a 17" Powerbook. All was well until the computer
restarted to begin the install process. On the screen appeared a
graphic depicting what looked like a wireless mouse with a diagram
showing battery installation. The install stopped at that point and
would go no further. I simply could not figure out how to get past
this mouse diagram thing. A subsequent install of Syst 10.5 was
successful, but I need Syst 10.4 in order to use Classic. Must I
totally erase the drive? Does this mouse thing reside on the 10.4
install disk or what? Any advise would be welcomed.
Cube DVDs
2010-05-18 Thread John Carmonne
Hi All
 I was recently watching a DVD on a Cube G4 500 MHz 1.5 GB RAM machine, every
so often it would like skip I played it with the internal and a Pioneer 118
external and the same results. I'm using DVD player on Tiger. My video card is
a ATY Rage6 with 32 VRAM. When the glitch occurs its sound and video.
I have an extra Radeon 7500 card I can install if that make sense. I'm thinking
maybe a 500MHz processor is to blame but if so I'd think the glitch would be
more frequent, Any ideas?
Re: Can I add IR to my Quicksilver?
No idea about the IR I'm afraid, but how about using screen sharing
(can be enabled on tiger by ticking the "apple remote desktop" box in
the sharing bit of system prefs, tis built into leopard I think), that
way you could use the MacBook (or other laptop, or iPhone, or anything
that'll run VNC) to control the quicksilver?
OR, a Bluetooth USB dongle and find a keyboard/mouse you like?
But I also have a couple of smurfs that are in pretty nice condition,
So, the question is, can I pull the processor from a sawtooth and plug
This post appears under a thread subject line that came from me. You
DID NOT originate the thread. If you want to dispute my point of view
or change the focus of the thread that is called thread highjacking or
" threadjacking " and violates what is an LEM expectation of conduct.
And trollery no mater how cleverly inventive has no place here.
I'm the originator of THIS post, and I concur with the other
responders here that you are one arrogant, insulting supercilious
jerk! I'm with Bruce and Dan on this one; i.e., fuck facebook, and the
horse's ass it rode in here on. Facebook is unsuitable for this forum,
and I for one do not wish to waste my time checking into Facebook in
order to associate with dolts who spend their time proclaiming how
personally fantastic they are for being so "hip", and all, just
because they are willing to forfeit a little more of their privacy in
the pursuit of a narcissistic circle jerk. I'm on a "fatuous free"
diet, so I won't be partaking of the Facebook feasting.
FYI, looked up flux at dictionary.com, and it's original meaning is
indeed appropriate:
"flux-
late 14c., from O.Fr. flux, from L. fluxus, pp. of fluere "to
flow" (see fluent). Originally "excessive flow" (of blood or
excrement); an early name for "dysentery;"... "
