Al,
Don't worry about that. Section 2.3 explicitly gives you permission

Here's my hand. I did not see the article at the end of the email; did see the

I would have been more concerned of taking up too much wordage and wasted

But hey, you are right in defending copyright laws, though they are somewhat

Be sure you provide the version of AppleScript you want, or are required, to

My bad, Dan is correct. Giving the reference URL and title of the
item is the legal and acceptable method. Also, it reduces bandwidth
on the list.

There remains one question that begs resolution. I download an
article as legally authorized. I cannot legally store it
electronically. But, immediately and before I can delete it, Time
Machine puts it away. Worse yet, innocent and clueless folks in major
corporations download the same article, and it ends up stored in
corporate servers. I do not think that the written law has caught up
with such ramifications of evolving technology. So how does the
written law get interpreted today?

Not unless you have a PATA to SATA adapter or a SATA PCI card installed.

I have a SeriTek/1S2 PCI card in my QS 2002 with a 500GB Seagate SATA

Adapters are such as these:

Only if you have a PCI SATA card installed, which probably isn't the

OK. That solves that probem. ;-) Any other idea? Can the drive be
too big for the machine to handle?

Probably not. How about the cable ... is that new? a good one?
Connected well at both ends ... didn't come loose when the machine
was shut?

Cable looks fine. Conects well. Can one test it in one way or another?

I would also check to see if the iMac G5 has a SMU you can reset??

Tried it. Found the small button on the keyboard. No luck.

only one of the pins had snapped where the connector sitts on the
main board but that was enough to stop the drive being seen at all.

The pins on the drive looks as the pins on the old drive. OK. I say,

1) The old drive didn't really have issues. Rather the problem is
someplace else such as a bad SATA cable or a poorly seated connector.
Or maybe even something is wrong on the G5's mainboard. Have you tried
any type of diagnostic program?

What kind of diagnostics cen be used to figure out if the mainboard is
toast?

Try hooking it up to another computer or hook it up through an
external case.

The best thing to do when buying a USB card is identify a chipset
which does what you want it to do and then find a card with that
chipset on it. This minimizes (but does not completely eliminate)
the possibility of such unfortunate surprises.

The trick, then, is to find the proper chipset.

I see it a different way. Exactly how many list members do you think
would have seen the article had it not been re-posted to the list?

Thousands, if the url was posted. Just the url.

The post had the link back to the original site, which could and most
likely did generate traffic to it.

Raise your hand if you used the link instead of reading the email! ya right.

If anyone is liable it's Google Groups and/or the OP. LEM itself had
no direct involvement.

Google is protected by their size and common carrier type status.
LEM, no so well protected. Ziff could hit them with a take-down and
lawsuit -- and it would cost LEM thousands of dollars to deal with it.

No. The "one off" personal copy is covered by Fair Use.
Republishing a copyrighted work, in full, without the copyright
holder's explicit permission is NOT Fair Use.

I am actually very surprised that I have received 0 responses to this. I

And either way( or in any case, a " fair use" argument would be thrown at
it.

In the digital age we are all considered " journalists" .

Online promotion not for profit is not a crime. It is an expectation.
Social networks and hence the internet is rife with it.

And as Barnum said " there are two kinds of publicity, some and none" .

In the digital age hits are money in the bank of some sort.
