Since it's unusual (although not impossible) that a computer would die just
on the spot, I think the most likely issue is with the power source: either
the power strip, the power adapter, ot some of the cables.

You could also try to remove the battery. My PowerBook G4 is able to run
without battery inserted, I don't know about the iBook.

Best thing to do would be to try the iBook with an alternative power
adapter, if you can access one.

Re: external wireless device for mac mini

2012-09-15 Thread Scottls
I'm sure this question was pretty much answered already but I just
wanted to add another option which is what I did for this old
PowerBook G3 Wall-street I'm still banging on.

I got the universal WIFI adapter by IOGear. (model number GWU627) for
less than $25 on sale at newegg.com.

Instead of a card to plug in to the side this is a small dongle that
you plug an ethernet cord into and then into the ethernet port of the
laptop. It also needs power via USB but it is very easy to set up and
even though I'm only running OS X 10.2.8 I had no problem configuring
it up even on this old machine.

The reason I went this route rather than a PC card is because if I
want to I can also use this for a Blueray player, Smart TV, game
consoles or anything with a ethernet port. It is also 802.11 B/G/N
compatible with up to 150 Mbps transfer speeds. (which is almost fast
than this old 266MHz processor can handle though the 10BASE-T ethernet
port on it throttles it down to 10Mbps)

Just thought I'd share another option out there to think about.

iBook G4... Dead?

2012-09-15 Thread Scottls
Also make sure it is not a malfunction cause by a faulty lid switch or bad PRAM
battery buy disconnecting the power and pulling the battery out for 10 to 30
seconds and press the caps-lock button to make sure the LED is off and it is
completely powered down. Then try booting it up again.

If nothing happens then google how to reset your models PRAM battery and try
again.

If still nothing then you may be right because if it won't post then it is very
hard to diagnose.

Re: Power output problem?

2012-09-15 Thread Frank Dutra

I've had a lot more connected to a G4 than a couple of drives and a
9800. My guess is that your power supply is getting marginal. After 12
years likely the capacitors in the power supply have started going.
You could recap the power supply or do an atx conversion. Another
option is to power some of the extra equipment from an external power
supply, though if your power supply is on the way out then that'd be a
short term solution

OK, so I fired up this morning and was reading my mail when I had a
total freeze up. Rebooted (had to pull the power cord) and was
treated to a very nice graphic of the Radeon 9800 card with a
flashing red power plug and no startup chime,,, guess you were spot
on Wayne. Any advice on doing an ATX conversion ? Any heat problems?

Thanks

FYI anyone else following this thread. I was able to restart after
disconnecting my 2 internal ATA drives (have them mirrored on the
SATAs). I of course then had to try plugging in both SATA drives and
voilla!,,, feels good to have my backups up to date again and will
pick up a power supply to have on hand for that fateful morning when
the inevitable happens.

Thanks everyone.

I had this happen to me, it turned out the power cord I plugged my
white laptop plug into was unplugged. Make sure the power strip is
plugged in and working etc.

It had been working just fine; I'd closed the cover, unplugged the
power cord from the wall socket, carried it into another room and
plugged it into a power strip there.

Opened the cover and... nothing.
The screen is dark, no sound when I press the power button. Seems as
dead as can be, although I hope not!

Any ideas as to what the problem is and how to rectify it?

For months prior to the mobileme shutdown Apple deluged me - and every
other Mac user I know - with several-times-a-day notices stating that
I'd better switch to iCloud or I'd be left in the dust. Did you really
not see any of those notices?
