Wireless Mouse Options for PowerPC G4

2013-09-19 Thread Michael McMurtrey
My trusty Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 v2.0 is starting to
signs of wear and tear, and I've been looking for a replacement.
However, all of the currently available Mac-compatible wireless mice
seem to be only for Intel Macs.

Does anyone have a source/recommendation for a wireless laser mouse
that will work on my G4 MDD running OS 10.5.8, OS 10.4.11, and Classic?

Thanks in advance

Thanks for that - it is amazing what one doesn't SEE when looking
straight at it.

I like the Gear Head MP2325BLK.

BLK is black, but these also come in colors.

The Bluetooth dongle is included with the product, and these are available
for about $12, from Fry's or eBay or Amazon.

I use my G4 machines through a KVM-A switch as I have only one monitor.

Works with all G4 machines which I still have in service, and that
includes a G4 MDD dual 1.42 and a G4 Mini 1.25. Running 10.4.11 and
10.5.8, when needed for access to Adobe utilities which I have purchased,
but have elected not to upgrade to their Intel versions.

The other ports on the KVM-A go to Core i- or Xeon-based hackintoshes
running 10.8.5.

Most of the wireless mice I've ever seen don't require any drivers at all; they
'look' like regular wired USB mice to the computer. The 'Compatible with' notes
on these things are quite misleading, since they'll only specify the current
systems, usually.

All the buttons and doodads on the mice may not work, and will require
something like USB Overdrive or something like that, but basic 'three-button +
scrollwheel' mouse is recognized out of the box in 10.5 and maybe 10.4.

In my experience, any USB mouse will work just fine in OSX.
I mean, left and right click, and scroll wheel are recognized by default in
OSX.

In OS9, though, the right-click won't be recognized by default (you can use
the standard Control-click to do that).
I'm not sure about Classic: if the input is managed by OSX (as I think), it
should be fine.

The only problem arises when the mouse have additional buttons or
non-standard features; then you will need the manufacture's software to
handle those. Idem if you want to customize what buttons do.

Microsoft mice ( http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/mice )
are usually good hardware, and most of them should be supported by their
IntelliPoint OSX software:
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/downloads
(even if the box doesn't say so)

AFAIK, Microsoft and Logitech are the only input devices' big manufacturers
that care about Mac drivers.

Not typically. USB Overdrive is my recommendation for that situation. There
is a freeware version of it for OS 9 floating around by permission of the
original developer. It will work in Classic, and works well with my Microsoft
laser mice in OS 9 also.
