Hello All,

I have been running a G5 2.5 Ghz PPC Dualie with 10.5.8 using wireless
internet through a Linksys WRT54G router for several years.

Now the wife is worried about someone stealing our wifi.

How do I set up the router to prevent this .. I know it is some sort of
password but I can not seem to find the staring point to begin the process.

Thanks!!

Dan

Hi Dan,
Before giving up on it, pull the battery again, and reset the motherboard by
pressing the PMU button (good solid 3-5" single push).

Done for 20 seconds

I recall when one did this on older G4s that resetting the board worked best by
unplugging the power cord, unplugging the PSU from the board, yanking the
battery, pressing the reset button, then waiting (at least) 10-15 minutes
before reassembling.

Did for 15 minutes ... no joy!!

When I press the power button above the MDDs it glows as long as I hold
it but no sound whatsoever ... no boing, no HDs spinning up, no CD/DVD
drives resetting ... nothing.

Just happened to a QuickSilver recently (the dead part); glad I remembered this
trick.
HTH,
Dana

Wits end coming up!!

By "Unplugging", do you only mean from the power source, and maybe not
the ethernet / phone line?

Actually I do not remember ... I was in a hurry!!
The phone line can fry a computer, too ... I think ... I believe that
is what happened to me awhile ago. Even though my QS 2002 Dual 1GHz
computer came back on, it was erratic and also a connected USB Scanner
(Nikon 5000ED), connected to another computer, but on the ethernet
hardwired line, needed a new circuit board.

That is above my pay grade ... easier to just get a "new" computer!

New mobo "fixed" the QS ...

Big Ouch.

Strange Behavior w/G5 and iMovie

Hello All,

Been years since I posted here ... no problems with my G5 2.5 dualie

I uploaded a short movie consisting of 5 scenes. Every time I try and
import it to iMovie it "unexpectedly quits". I have tried importing it
3 times and each time it quits.

I have NO IDEA as to what is wrong. Is there some incompatibility issue
with 10.5.8 and 7.1.4 that I am unaware of? Surely I have enough power
and ram to handle this program??

Thank you,

All sounds a little fishy to me. 2.5 is liquid cooled maybe it's a 2.3. Also a logic
board starting to go?? Well a logic board isn't hard to get or hard to replace. The
processor is easy to replace also. I saw 2.7 liquid cooled unit for $300.00 in super

Power Macintosh G5 (June 2004)

   * Got a G3, G4, or G5 Power Mac? Join LEM's G-List Group.

Overview

Less than a year after unveiling the original Power Mac G5, Apple
released a new line of G5 models, each with dual processors and an 8x
SuperDrive.

As before, the entry level model uses 64-bit PCI slots and only supports
up to 4 GB of RAM vs. PCI-X slots and an 8 GB RAM ceiling in the faster G5s.

The motherboard architecture uses HyperTransport technology. System
memory is so fast (400 MHz on a 900 MHz to 1.25 GHz bus) that Apple
doesn't bother with a level 3 cache.

A headphone jack, USB 2.0 port, and FireWire port are located on the
front of the G5 for easy access.

*The G5 uses an aluminum enclosure that's vented in the front and back.
The case includes four thermal zones and 9 fans to handle cooling, each
independently controlled for speed. The 2.5 GHz model incorporates a
liquid cooling system to keep the CPU from overheating.

Just install Firefox. It'll find your Netscape bookmarks automagically.

Alternatively you can export your bookmarks from Netscape, and then
import them into Firefox; both programs use similar Bookmarks

you want to erase, erase, partition if you like and then restart.

You can also copy what you want to save from the 6GB to the 40GB and
then erase it. or you can just take everything to the trash and empty.

Fan ?

2009-12-14 Thread DAN A CURRIE
Hello All,

I have had my G5 2.5 Ghz dualie wit 4 GBRAM running 10.5.8 less than a
year so its' quirks are new to me. However when I try to view TV
programs on Fancast or MSNBC the fans really take off.

Is this normal operation?

iMovie / iDVD?

2009-08-26 Thread DAN A CURRIE

Hello,

I am running a G5 2.5Ghz dualie with 4GB RAM, 2 x 320 GB HDD and using
10.4.11.

I am currently using iMovie 5.0.2 and iDVD 5.0.1 with updates.

I have edited my video in iMovie, with titles included. Now I want to
make a DVD to play on TV.

How do I get the iMovie to iDVD WITHOUT all the extra garbage that iDVD
wants to put on it? This is a 10 minute movie and all I want to do is
put JUST WHAT I HAVE EDITED on a DVD!!

I did this about a year ago but do not remember how I did it
Sometimers strikes again!!

Upgrading an MDD

2009-07-20 Thread DAN A CURRIE

Hello All,

I wanted to upgrade my children's (my old) G4 MDD 1.25 Dualie, 2 GB RAM,
OS10.5.4 to the 1.42 Ghz Dual processors and heat sink.

The buss speed is 167 so I should have had no problems.

However, when I swapped the processors, heat sinks (big brass one),
pressed the cuda button and then powered up and I get the "boing" but
the monitor displays nothing. I tried again and still the same, I have tried
using CMD + OPT + P + R and I do get the gray Apple but NO spinning wheel. I
again put everything back as it was and it started just fine and continues to
run.

I still do not know what I am overlooking?

Suggestions, ideas, comments!!

I am wanting to upgrade my children's (my old) G4 MDD 1.25 Dualie, 2 GB
RAM, 3 HD, OS10.5.4 to the 1.42 Ghz Dual processors and heat sink.

The buss speed is 167 so I should have had no problems.

However, when I swapped the processors, heat sinks (big brass one),
pressed the cuda button and then powered up and I got the "boing" but
the monitor did not display anything. I tried again and still the same,
I then put everything back as it was and it started just fine and is
running now.

What did I get wrong??

HELP!!! Administrator deterioration

2009-04-13 Thread DAN A CURRIE

Hello All,

What began as a simple Dashboard / Widgets question has rapidly
deteriorated into a full blow catastrophe that I have 1) never heard of,
2) never encountered before (otherwise I could solve it myself) and 3)
see no workable or work-around solution to.

My daughter, in an attempt to bypass parental controls, somehow was able
to remove or change my account from ADMINISTRATOR to STANDARD and I can
not get in to make ANY changes except to change the password which it
will accept until I try and make a change and then it tells me that I am
not an administrator.

When I type in the correct password, I know its the correct password
because I know the answer to the clue, it says that only an
administrator can get in. I checked the Accounts in SP and I am a
Standard Account with no privileges.

I can not even reload the OS to start over because it keeps asking for
the same password, or whichever password I change it to and then tells
me I am NOT an Administrator.

I have tried starting in safe mode but I am still unable to make any
changes.

Frustration levels are rising!

Airport Extreme Card?

2009-04-11 Thread DAN A CURRIE

Hello All,

I have upgraded to a G5 2.5 Dualie w/ 4GB RAM / 2 -320 GB HD’s and a 500
GB external HD / NETSCAPE 9.0.0.6 / OS X.5.4.

I am currently connected to the internet with a Linksys WRT54G Wireless
Router, however the G5 is using a wired port connection as it has no
Airport Card.

Someone above my pay grade please advise on the advantages of and which
type of card to buy / install.

Thank you,

Thanks,

My thoughts exactly this fine morning. When / if I get a G5 then I can
firewire what I want to keep to it and scrub the HDS's on the MDD and
"begin again"!

Then I can prune as I go and get a "lean, mean fighting MAChine" for the
kids.

Thanks to ALL for the help and inspiration.

Maybe I should have prefaced this mess saying that what I was trying to
do was to have three (3) OS on the same MAC but 1 each on the three
drives. An OS9.2 drive, an OS10.4 , and an OS10.5 drive. The 10.5 is
mine to try out new software, the 10.4 is for the son and daughter, and
the 9.2 is for the son for older software and games that were
discontinued by 10.4.

Maybe I should have just partitioned the 200GB into a 9.2, 10.4 and 10.5
partitions but I thought it would be easier and *safer* to have an OS on
each HDD.

I ran OS9.2 and Tiger together, then I took the plunge and went commando
with only Tiger, now I am running Tiger and Leopard together but am
about to get a G5 ... I hope and am going to give this to the kids ...
they have just about worn out their Beige G3's.

Tried this ... evidently it is an Atheistic drive ... still do not boot,
also tried moving it up the food chain to the number 2 slot and using
the Option key ... the only drive recognized then was my 10.5 HDD.

I am tired of fooling with it for now ... am way behind in Honey-dos

When I try to boot up OS9.2 going through SP, it tries very hard to find
OS9.2 - the old file folder is there flashing from the Picasso to ? mark
about 5 or 6 times then it "gives up" and goes to 10.5.

Will try the Option Key next.

Perhaps the 6GB is TOO far down the tree? I asked about that before ...

... on a G4 MDD

2009-02-08 Thread Dan A. Currie

Hello All and Dan,

Here is what I have - a G4 MDD DUAL 1.25 MHz / 2 GB RAM / NETSCAPE
9.0.0.6, 1 -120 GB (OS10.5), 1 - 200 GB (OS10.4), 1- 120GB and 1 - 6GB
(OS9.2) HDD's in that order.

When I go to Startup Disk in System Preferences all 3 OS's are there on
their respective HDs but when I select OS9.2 and then click RESTART the
G4 begins a normal restart, looks for OS9.2 ... CAN NOT FIND IT ... and
restarts in OS10.5.

Undoubtedly I have done something wrong ... but what I do not know.

In System Profiler the ATA Device Tree looks like this -

ATA Bus
WDC AC66200H
STE3120024A
ATA Bus
PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-107D
PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-116D
ATA Bus
WDC WD1200JB-00FUAO
WDC WD2000BB-00FTAO

The little 6GB has three settings - MASTER, SLAVE and SPECIAL.

I have it set for SLAVE.

Solutions and advice appreciated?!?

Extra HDD

2009-02-07 Thread Dan A. Currie

Hello All,

Moving on from my G5 problems ... a new question.

I have an old but very functioning 6GB HDD that I would like to install
in my G4 MDD DUAL 1.25 MHz / 2 GB RAM / 2 -120 GB and 1 - 200 GB HD /
NETSCAPE 9.0.0.6 / OS X 10.5

I want to install OS 9.2 on it so that my son can still use some of the
older MAC software.

Any particular place or order to install in the case?

Should the jumpers be set to MASTER or SLAVE since it will have an OS on it?

General advice accepted!!

TIA,

Dan Currie

Startup Partition

2009-01-29 Thread Dan A. Currie

Hello All,

I have read this LEM article about partitioning

http://lowendmac.com/tech/partition.shtml

but it doesn't quite answer my question.

I have 3 HDD in my G4 and would like to be able to clean them using Disk
Utility without always inserting the OSX Disk.

I know that I create a small partition on one of the other drives but
EXACTLY what do I install on it so that I can use it as a Start up Disk

... just copy and burn them to DVD ... that is what I do.

For $2.00 more get the Pioneer, it is plug and play and works nicely ...
I have both a DVR -116 and a DVR-107 in my MDD.

I agree wholeheartedly!! Apple tried it once without Jobs and almost
sank into oblivion. Jobs IS unique to his company ... like Ford and
Edison and Disney ... innovators and dreamers who have a vision of what
they want but can not quite explain that vision to others.

Someone once said that for several years after Disney died that his
followers did NOT change a thing ... Disney was ALL about change and
innovation.

If you want the same old recycled garbage year after year just watch as
MicroSoft moves from XP to Vista to the next unnamed OS debacle. SSDD

Not everything Jobs has done has been a success, nor was Fords, Edison
or Disney, but I can tell you that people always wanted to know what was
their next big thing.

I hope Jobs will live long and prosper so that all of us Mac Fans and
Fanatics can enjoy and use the fruit of his ideas and labors. The
thought of a world without Macs would be too horrible to contemplate.

OS9, OS X and Partitioning

2009-01-09 Thread Dan A. Currie

Hello All,

I will be giving my son my G4 MDD dual 1.25 and it will have a 160GB HDD.

I want to install OS9.2 and OSX 10.4.11 or if possible OSX 10.5 on the HDD.

I know there is a rule about partitioning the HDD so that both drives
can be installed ... but I can not for the life of me remember what it
was!

Something about 9 being installed on a smaller partition @%^%$#$...@!!

And there was another rule about the MDD's not recognizing all of a HDD
above a certain ?? number.

Help would be greatly appreciated,

Dan Currie

I agree about the size but you might want to reformat for possible OSX
installation at a later date. I think the 1st partition has to be
greater than 9GB.

Recheck your partitioning and installation, possibly do a Clean Install
and try again. BTW wat is your G3?
