SATA vs. PCI-X for SSD, PowerMac G5 dual CPU, OS X 10.4

2020-04-30 Thread GLT
Is there such a thing as a PCI-X card with onboard SSD?
Would that be preferable or not vs. SATA in my G5 dual cpu?
Any reason to avoid SSD for my configuration?

Mac-on-Linux

2016-04-06 Thread GLT
Are any of you familiar at all with Mac-on-Linux? I've been trying to get it
going under a very recent Ubuntu release I've installed on my G5's 2nd hard
drive but can't get past a couple of problems. Still it looks like I'm close to
getting an OS X install DVD to boot. I've tried the project mailing list but it
looks like it's been inactive for years.

I want to set up my G5 to run Linux

2016-02-12 Thread GLT
I've looked around a little on the Web for how to set up a PowerMac G5 with
Linux, but could use suggestions/advice--*NOT* mere pointers to information
sources--and maybe a small amount of help by Email or phone (within the
USA). (I'm a long-time Mac user and know a little about Linux too, so I
shouldn't need much help by email or phone.)

Thanks!

Re: Strange fan issue with G5 + Leopard

2011-12-07 Thread GLT
I have an occasional problem similar to those mentioned above. My G52 2.3
GHz Dual Processor (early 2003 if I remember correctly) fan speeds
sometimes make no sense at all.

The ambient temperature is generally at around 70 degrees F. or a degree or
two cooler in the winter (as now).

I can be browsing the web, moving local files around, building C code,
etc., and the fans generally run at a pretty low speed.

Now and then, though,--sometimes when the system is just idling along--the
fan speeds increase dramatically. Sometimes the system even *hangs up*,
with the fans running at full speed, and I have to hit the power button.

This does not happen often but it sure bugs me when it does. What happens
if I leave my machine running while I'm away from home, and the fans go to
full speed for several days? Do the fans bur out? Would the system
overheat? Who knows?

So I just never leave the system fully up when I'm away. (I leave it in
Sleep mode so that the fans don't run at all.)

Re: G5 Wakes up Screaming

2010-05-30 Thread GLT
I'm having a problem that sounds pretty similar. Occasionally while
sleeping, my G5's fan(s) (I can't tell from outside which ones) start
screaming away at full speed. When this happens, though, the system is
also (apparently) still sleeping but won't wake up. Nothing goes into
any of the log files after this point, which appears to confirm that
the system is indeed frozen.

However I don't have an AirPort network--just 10BaseT. I do see some
network events in the log files but haven't tried yet to correlate
them with the fan issue.

Have you learned any more about your problem yet?

I was aware of a similar requirement to make the geForce 6200 work in
my G4, but not aware a mod was also needed Radeon 9600 Pro. Thanks!

However, the link you provided took me to a basically empty page.

Thanks again,

nVidia Geforce 6200 vs Radeon 9600 Pro 64 MB

2010-01-28 Thread GLT
I have a G5 2.0 GHz dual processor PCI-X tower running 10.5.8 that
currently has the stock AGP 8x Radeon 9600 Pro MB video.

I also have a 8x AGP nVidia 6200 (don't recall RAM size) flashed for
Mac.Is there a clear-cut reason to prefer one of these AGP cards over
the other, for use in this G5?

Perhaps someone can compare/contrast them for me?

Also, would the Radeon card work in A 1.2GHz "Digital Audio" G4's AGP
slot?
