I have a G5 with different serial numbers. The origin logic board died and was 
replaced by Apple, the new part has a different serial number to ID the 
computer.

I had the problem of fans running wild with my G5 tower. Fortunately it was a 
week before the Applecare ran out. The problem was with the logic board, which 
had to be replaced. It cost about $2K, so time ago.
