Re: Best way to clone a hard drive to use as a start-up drive?

If you are using Leopard you can simply use the Disk Utility to copy/clone your parititon(s). That's what I did when I moved my MacBook to a larger hard drive. Of course, the feature you use isn't called for "copy" but "restore". But if you specify your old drive as the source and your new one as the destination you'll get the desired result. << I don't know if this is different on OSX 10.5, but I just did _exactly_ this on 10.4 and the copy ended up as a non-bootable disk, rife with permissions errors. Many hours spent with Disk Doctor and Disk Utility on the 10.4 install DVD got things back to a workable state. I'd use CCC or similar (Ghost?) instead. -Jim G -- jimg at yojimg dot net --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. It spins up, clicks a few times, and then doesn't mount. I was able to finally complete a disk permissions repair on the 80 GB drive this morning, and I did get the computer to boot off of that drive, although there were a few permissions-errors warning messages after the desktop loaded. I'll continue working on it tonight. I did save off the current contents of the 80 GB drive as a DMG onto another external drive, so if I need to reformat that drive and re- install the OS, that is always a (painful) option. If I did that, would I lose my OS 9 bootable install? I'd need to first re-install OS 9 and then re-install OS X, correct -- otherwise I'd only have Classic mode? G4 won't boot
Yesterday I attempted to upgrade the primary HD in my G4/400 Sawtooth from a 20Gb to an 80Gb drive. I used Disk Utility's "Restore" function to attempt to clone the 20Gb drive onto the 80Gb drive. Now when I install that 80Gb drive into the computer and attempt to boot it, it hangs at the grey Apple logo. I've read that this cloning technique can cause bad permissions on the new drive (80Gb in my case) so I've also tried running "Repair Disk Permissions" from Disk Utility off the 10.4 DVD -- this seems to find lots of bad permissions on the 80Gb drive; I left it run overnight and checked this morning to find that it froze 3/4 of the way through the permissions repair. If I put that 80Gb drive into an external case, it mounts on a different computer, and the data I copied onto it is definitely there. Any ideas? Unfortunately I think I shorted something on the original 20Gb drive during the swapping -- it no longer works at all. :( Thanks! -Jim G --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: iMac G3 500 or G4 Powermac 400?
I'd get the G4/400. I have a G4/400 Sawtooth (AGP Graphics) and it runs OSX 10.4.9 fine. I've also been able to upgrade it with a better ATI Radeon 8500 Mac Edition video card (see http://www.barefeats.com/sawgraf.html) so it is Quartz Extreme compatible. Also the fact that it has PCI slots means it's easy to expand, adding a USB 2.0 card or a second ATA controller for large-drive support, etc. -Jim G On May 21, 9:10 pm, Po-en Tsai wrote: > Hello, > > I have a choice from my school for a iMac G3 Indigo Slot Load 500Mhz > OR a G4 Powermac 400Mhz DVD free. > > Which one do you think is better, performance wise, and more reliable? > And can you upgrade the graphics in the Powermac G4? > > Thanks for all suggestions, > > Po-en --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
