I would send it back if you are able as card does not function as it should. If
it was AS IS then your pretty much stuck.

Subject: Bad Video Card?

i recently purchased a Radeon 9800 Pro video card from an ebay
seller. It was advertised as 256 Mb VRAM, and there is indeed a
sticker on the card which identifies it as such. However, after
installation, System Profiler reports it as 128 Mb VRAM, not 256, and
there is a distinct hot, ozone smell coming from the computer. Upon
reinstallation of the original video card, the smell has disappeared.

What's the consensus? Is this card defective?

Re: hdiutil help

It probably giving that error because Macs can't read MS-DOS. Can you use the
-fs option for FAT or FAT32?

Subject: hdiutil help

I'm trying to write a script that turns a zip file into a Windows-mountable ISO
file, and my sticking point is the hdiutil command creating the disk image.

hdiutil create -format UDTO -srcfolder

Works. It creates a .cdr (aka .iso) file with the contents of the source
folder. However the resulting disk image is formatted with a HFS+ file system,
so when you try to mount the .iso file on a wondws machine (or the disk made by
burning it) Windows claims it's corrupted and unreadable.

hdiutil has a -fs option allowing me to choose MS-DOS as the file system but
trying that results in an error:

mount_msdos: /dev/disk2 on /Volumes/TEST: Operation not permitted
/sbin/mount failed with error 18176

However, it seems to continue to make the disk image.

Anyone know why it' spitting out that error?

(and before you suggest it:

No Toast is not an acceptable solution, nor is using Disk Utility, this has to
be managed on a regular basis by a user who just wants to stick some stuff in
his windows Access database (yes, I'm writing a Mac utility to create an ISO so
Access can use it in his Windows VM)

I use TeamViewer for things like this. Its quick and easy and you can use it
for more than just fixing computers (it has a presentation mode). Best of all
its free for personal use.

My husband uses a G4 PowerBook running 10.4.11. I have a new iMac
(10.6.6) and a MacBook Pro (10.5.x). He is NOT computer literate and
needs help from time to time. Some of those times, I am not at home to
take care of the problems. I know there is software out there --
preferably free--- that will enable me to fix his computer no matter
where I am.

I have heard of LogMeIn, but it looks like you have to pay for it. I
don't know how well it works, either. Can any of you recommend a
program and how easy it would be to use?

This also implies both iMac and iBook have aircards.

I leave my computers running 24/7 if they aren't actually being used the power
is minimal.

Yes, but that implies that the iMac (?) will always be powered on
whenever the iBook needs to access the Internet. The iMac is in this
case acting as the router for the local network.

Routers usually use less power than an iMac will when left powered on
24/7. (I pay around 16 cents a KWH so how much electricity I use is a
concern for me. For others, maybe not so much.)

John,

Have you run diagnostic testing on both drives? Also what type of connections
are both drives running (IDE, SATA, USB1, USB2, Firewire, etc). What are the

2 internal HDs

I have MenuMeters installed so that I can monitor the activity of
each processor.

This evening I noticed that one of my processors was not
running--MenuMeters showed 0%.
To remedy the situation I zapped the PRAM, did a low level reset and restarted.

The G4 restarted in OS 9.2.2, and indicated that my date and time
were incorrect. When I went to the Date and Time Control Panel to
set the date and time, my Mac crashed.

I ran DiskWarrior and it repaired several itemsthe same issues on
each of my internal drives.

I don't know what the problem was with my date and time, or why the
Mac crashed when I tried to set it. My PRAM battery is freshyet
the date showed as 1904. Strange.

Thankfully, I am back to normal now.

What is the keyboard command that allows you to re-start and then
select a startup disk?
