Re: Bad Video Card?
I would send it back if you are able as card does not function as it should. If it was AS IS then your pretty much stuck. -Original Message- From: Michael McMurtrey Sender: g3-5-list@googlegroups.com Date: Fri, 27 Jan 2012 15:08:48 To: Reply-To: g3-5-list@googlegroups.com Subject: Bad Video Card? i recently purchased a Radeon 9800 Pro video card from an ebay seller. It was advertised as 256 Mb VRAM, and there is indeed a sticker on the card which identifies it as such. However, after installation, System Profiler reports it as 128 Mb VRAM, not 256, and there is a distinct hot, ozone smell coming from the computer. Upon reinstallation of the original video card, the smell has disappeared. What's the consensus? Is this card defective? It probably giving that error because Macs can't read MS-DOS. Can you use the -fs option for FAT or FAT32? My husband uses a G4 PowerBook running 10.4.11. I have a new iMac (10.6.6) and a MacBook Pro (10.5.x). He is NOT computer literate and needs help from time to time. Some of those times, I am not at home to take care of the problems. I know there is software out there -- preferably free--- that will enable me to fix his computer no matter where I am. I have heard of LogMeIn, but it looks like you have to pay for it. I don't know how well it works, either. Can any of you recommend a program and how easy it would be to use? The iMac is in this case acting as the router for the local network. Routers usually use less power than an iMac will when left powered on 24/7.
