Be careful, the more you rip the more artists you put out on the streets!

Name one.

There's a reason why there aren't a ton of these utilities
freely available for use in the US, it's /illegal/ and unethical.

It is 100% legal and totally ethical for me to rip my DVDs. It's
called Fair Use.

Or are you implying that the OP would besmirch this list's rep by
asking for assistance with ripping DVDs he doesn't already own?

2009-01-28 Thread Nikki Wraith

The issue is simple. While it is indeed legal for you to posess a
back up copy of a commercially produced DVD that you have purchased,
it is NOT legal to break the copy protection on said DVD. Thank your
Senators and representatives for that little catch 22.

How can one say for sure? It's entirely possible, unless he owns a tv
show. In addition I do know that there was one dvd ripping software
which was banned from being sold in the US because it successfully
decrypted protected DVDs, doing such is indeed illegal.

I think you're thinking of DeCSS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeCSS
which was declared illegal because it was a DMCA violation, but since
the source code is protected under free speech, I can wear a T-shirt
with the code printed on it, or express it in any of a variety of
methods http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/DeCSS/Gallery/index.html

See here, with the source code ASCII-arted into a DVD logo

Yup, that's what I was thinking of. If you can express the source
code in any fashion due to free speech, doesn't that mean one should
be able to express the source code in the form of binary machine
code in retail packaging? It seems like this is another case of the
law stepping in and infringing on our right to free speech.
