Guidance on Webcam - better list to keep the piece here

Dear Listers,

I am very sorry that you all decided to blast my earnest request for assistance
on webcams and then proceeded to hijack the subject to the point that it
apparently has no moderation to morphing into an entirely different subject.

BTW: Thanks for confirming that it is indeed ON TOPIC for this G List!

I do not intend to leave the list, but now I ask the collective for a good
place to discuss webcam issues in fairness and on a leveler playing field.

This is the coming future of communications: WEBCAMS AND VOICE COMMANDS and we
are on the brink of the precipice of it, but others want to drag us backward.
So be it, please help me find a better place.

Thank you all,

JML

IIRC, you were asking about security and the referenced security hole
was software knowingly installed on a computer by an administrator
who had physical access. There is no protection from that short of
reformatting the disk, or destroying it. Hence, the morphing of the
thread to disk destruction.

As long as you are using it on a G Mac, ask away here

Webcams-fine. The promise of videophones from when I was a kid has
finally started arriving. I used one in 1967 at the Expo '67 Worlds
Fair in Montreal to speak with some other kids in Disneyland in
California. Impressive stuff to a 8 yo kid.

As to voice commands, with the exception of differently abled people
who need it, please, Lord, N. It is one thing if you live
alone and have no one else around, but voice commands in an open
office environment? Or any office environment where doors are open?
At night at home when the kids are asleep? I'll stick with my KB and
mouse, thank you very much.

Now, if they ever get the alpha wave (or whatever works) scanners
working at a reasonable price and accuracy, then we can talk.

Where have you been? Webcams and voice command is around for many years and
the technology is pretty old. It sure is not "the future of communication".
In your previous post you said something about watching your house over the
Internet. The best solution would be using an IP based camera (or network
camera), means a camera that does not use your computer. You just set it up
and plug it in to your router. D-Link makes some decent one, the best ones I
have worked with are from AXIS.

Re: Guidance on Webcam - better list to keep the piece here

2010-02-23 Thread Wallace Adrian D'Alessio
Jonas has been asking about webcams for years now. I think it started
with setting up streaming video for his church so that shut-ins could
see and hear the services.

I looked at his thread. With the current story in the news who is to
say he does not have a credible concern regarding computers he may fix
and give to needy students? Why deride him for simply asking? Is that
the spirit that LEM has fostered over the years? So far he has rather
little discussion of webcam issues.

And when he said something about the thread not leading to cogent
information he was attacked and chastised for not putting his concern
on a list where it belongs ( according to some. A LIST WITH NO READERS
!

Then another lister, unheard from until now, an unknown participant(
which is OK) makes a SNIDE innuendo which is extremely unfair to
Jonas.

I know it is Winter and we always have these cabin fever breakouts of
incivility, but come on people. This list is here to help. Not judge
those asking for help. if it's ego gratification you need go to the
nearest Starbucks or other coffee shop, swill some high test and start
a conversation there. That's what I do !

Or is it easier to be mean when you can't see their faces or there expressions?

The thread did have cogent answers. They were provided clearly and
early in the thread. The story in the news is about someone who has
physical access to the computers, root level admin privileges and
permission from higher ups to install the monitoring software. The
only way to make sure that similar software is not on donated
computers is to either nuke and pave the HD (write zeros to every
sector and do a clean install) or to remove the old drive and install
a new one. Both options were discussed in the early parts of the
thread. The latter option is what led the thread to HD destruction.

It is not an exploit that can be installed remotely without explicit
permission of an administrator level user, at least on Macs.
Therefore, there is very little to worry about if you follow one of
the two above options.

The chastisement was to take a discussion to the LEMlists list, which
was specifically set up to discuss the policies and practices on the
LEM lists. It is not an active list, but many of the LEM nannies and
Dan do monitor it closely. That being said, as I posted before, we do
allow civil discussion of list issues on the list.
