Just got this from Yahoo:

Yahoo! GeoCities Service Announcement Important notice: GeoCities is closing.

We're writing to let you know that Yahoo! GeoCities, our free web site building 
service and community, is closing on October 26, 2009, your GeoCities site will 
no longer appear on the Web, and you will no longer be able to access your 
GeoCities account and files. 

Anyone know of a free host, please let us know.

Pretty old news that GeoCities is closing. You can try Google for free.

use Comcast.

If you have a robots.txt files in your web site blocking web crawlers,  
The Internet Archive will not archive the pages in that directory.

Right.  Or if you have a site that nobody links to.   Then they're 
far less likely to find it.

I don't know if the usual search engine rules apply to archive.org - 
preference to sites which are not full of coding errors, have meta 
tags and robots.txt files (non-blocking is fine, just as long as you 
have one), more incoming links, etc.

I think it depends of the "popularity" of a page.

Anyway, the Wayback Machine is good for one untold "feature": you can
sometimes find on it archives that aren't online anymore, like drivers or
older version of software from defunct companies.

The fact is that much of the content formely hosted at Geocities can
nowadays be put in services like Blogger/Facebook (for text), Picasa/Flickr
(for images) and YouTube (for videos).

And hosting services for custom-designed websites offer more for less,
nowadays.
