Use your install-CD to boot from. In the Menu-bar you'll find the utility to
change passwords.

Re: Password change

2008-12-16 Thread old newbie

I have an old (obviously)G3 which I got with nothing but a keyboard.
When trying to upgrade the OS, I am asked for a password, but without
a system disk, and getting no help from the previous owner, I seem to
be stuck.
Does anyone have a suggestion?

Go get a system disk.

Seriously, this is a must-have item, as it's a basic thing for so many
different diagnosis and fixit things.

Re: Password change

2008-12-17 Thread old newbie

Please excuse my ignorance, as I am new to this system, but where do I
find a system disk? I suspect there isn't one disk for all levels of
OSX, so I have to find one for my release.

If you click on the apple icon, and select 'About this Mac' it will
tell you what version you have. Then off to Ebay or the LEM swaplist
and look. Be aware that you;ll want a 'retail' version, not a gray
disk version, which are restore disks designed for specific models.

If you know the password, go into Control Panel > Accounts and change
it.

If you don't know the password, boot from your OS X installer CD and
select Change Password from the Installer menu (it may say 'Change
Administrator's Password'...it's been a long time since I saw that
menu.)

A sure fire way to not ever have to do this again is to NOT have the
system boot automatically into your account, but have it make you log
on. When you use the password more often, you don't forget it. It's
also much more secure, especially for a laptop...
