Re: Power output problem?
If you do a search withatx G4 you'll get quite a few hits with pinouts and instructions. I do have a G4 with an ATX power supply. Mine was done with an adapter so that if the ATX power supply ever quits, it's just a matter of plugging another in -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Power output problem?
I agree with Mr. Prahlad, You're asking too much of your Mystic's 338W PSU. Also, Radeon 9800 Pro has a higher TDP than the GeForce4 Ti 4600 which was, if I remember it correctly, the higher-end video card intended for this line of Power Macs. I would desist from upgrading the video card with that 9800 Pro, which nowadays shouldn't make so much of a difference, and go for another card with lower power consumption. Besides, I think a 9800 Pro would be overkill for that machine, the processor/memory/bus would be a bottleneck in comparison. Anyway, it could be the G4 power supply is not enough to sustain all those peripherals. The easiest fix that I see would be to disconnect the Pioneer optical drive and put it in an externally powered box but I have no idea if that will work? If the problem is too much power request from the PSU, I don't think the optical drive would change much. OTOH, the 2TB drive could make a difference. -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Power output problem?
Hi all, I may have finally hit the wall so to speak, in my attempts at keeping my trusty old G4 (dual 450 mystic) alive. A recent attempt to upgrade my video card to a flashed Radeon 9800 pro that required patching into the power supply via the connector cables that service the original cd/dvd drive (upgraded to Pioneer 106D). The original cable also provided an extension for plugging into an optional zip drive or other optical device, which I have dedicated to 2 internal 2tb drives via a seritek pci sata card (2 port internal only). The Radeon video card relies on yet another jumper cable to patch into the optical power circuit which physically works, but I lose both SATA drives (won't mount) when powering up. Oddly enough, if only one drive is connected I am able to boot from it regardless of which drive it is so I doubt there are any master/slave issues. WOuld like to resolve this issue so I can renew backing up the SATAs and try a Leopard upgrade on one. DOes anyone know if this is a voltage issue? The easiest fix that I see would be to disconnect the Pioneer optical drive and put it in an externally powered box but I have no idea if that will work? Thanks -- -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Power output problem?
I've had a lot more connected to a G4 than a couple of drives and a 9800. My guess is that your power supply is getting marginal. After 12 years likely the capacitors in the power supply have started going. You could recap the power supply or do an atx conversion. Another option is to power some of the extra equipment from an external power supply, though if your power supply is on the way out then that'd be a short term solution -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. I have the original OEM 30 gb drive plus a another 40 gb ATA drive that I really don't need except for some older OS's,,, I'm guessing the power demands on the 2 ATA must be at least the power drain of one of the 2tb SATAs? -- Frank Dutra PO Box 3402 Nantucket MA 02584 mailto: fdut...@gmail.com Voice: (508) 292-1528 FAX: (815) 377-2407 -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
