And. . . Be very careful when you talk to the company representative, probably in India, who will reflexively tell you that it's not compatible unless you paid your DSL provider for it. If you push, with reasons why you need the features of the proposed replacement,. you have a chance of getting a well thought out response. ATM, asynchronous transfer mode and nothing to do with automated teller machine, is quite common in the DSL world but there is no requirement on providers to use it. You could ask if your provider uses ATM and if the Speedstream is compatible. So far no problems with the modem, though my router (a DLink DIR-628) likes to flake out about once every week or two. I then manually have to disconnect PPPoE and then manually re-establish it. I'm inclined to blame the router rather than the Speedstream. Re: DSL Modem Question
The place to find out if your DSL modem is compatible is whoever is providing the actual DSL connection, which is usually the phone company, who is not necessarily the ISP. I'm using an external DSL modem that isn't on my local phone company's official list on their website, but the seller said it worked, and the phone company confirmed that it would work. The tech support guy said they'd prefer that I use it instead of my old Intel internal PCI modem (in a PC), which IS on their official list. Go figure. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. I've got exactly that modem. I've been using it with AT&T DSL for about 3 years now. (I upgraded it from an older model when I had bad DSL performance, and the older modem was suspected. Turns out the older modem was fine too; the problem was outside the house.) Anyway, I've had no problems with it.
