In any event, try turning any encryption in the base station off until
you get the adapter working.
Are you seeing a signal from the base station?
What does the card's utility software show?

That's true with WEP. I haven't encountered any WPA stuff that doesn't
use the same ASCII to hex/binary conversion process.
