And just one more viewpoint:
Why not buy another Radeon 9000 and spend the savings on maxing out
the DA’s RAM?
I’m not sure if the DA is faster than the MDD in actual practice,
though. The processor isn’t that much faster, and the bus speed is
slower.
I think you’ve got two pretty equal machines there.

At the moment, I’m trying to figure out which of these two is faster:
a 466 DA or a 2x500 GigE. I took the video card and HD from the DA to
the GigE to really find out.
It’s similar to your situation--at a lower level--because the GigE has
a slower system bus and a faster processor. And you know what? I
hardly notice any difference, if at all.

Re: Video card advice for MDD and/or Digital Audio

2010-10-07 Thread Dan Knight, LowEndMac.com
Thanks for all the input!

I did some serious testing and benchmarking when I got the dual 1.8
GHz G4 upgrade, and I never got it to run reliably beyond 1.6 GHz. I
benchmarked at 1.53 GHz using Geekbench (CPU and memory tess), and it
was 27% faster than the dual 1 GHz MDD under Tiger, 19% faster under
Leopard. 1.6 GHz is just 4.5% faster than 1.53 GHz, so a 1.25 GHz MDD
would probably provide equal performance overall under Leopard,
although it would take a 1.42 GHz MDD/FW800 to match Tiger
performance.

http://lowendmac.com/reviews/09rev/giga-1.8-ghz-dual.html

The ideal would be a pair of 1.42 GHz FireWire 800 models with maximum
RAM.

Based on all the feedback, I'm leaning toward another Radeon 9000 Pro
for the MDD and bumping RAM in the DA from 1.25 MB to 1.5 MB. I may
also look for used 1.25 GHz and 1.42 GHz models. Craigslist can have
some great deals! (I got my 22 Cinema Display with a Quicksilver 867
MHz for $175 through Craigslist, then sold the Quicksilver for $100. I
love this display!)

Thanks again!

Video card advice for MDD and/or Digital Audio

2010-10-06 Thread Dan Knight, LowEndMac.com
Friends,

I have two production machines here at Low End Mac headquarters - a
dual 1 GHz Mirror Drive Door with 2 GB of RAM and a Rage 128 Pro video
card running Tiger and a Digital Audio upgraded with 1.25 GB of RAM, a
dual 1.6 GHz CPU, and Radeon 9000 Pro graphics (swapped from the MDD)
running Leopard.

The Tiger machine is used primarily for Classic Mode (so I can use
Claris Home Page), as well as Camino, TextWrangler, TextSoap, and
sometimes Photoshop Elements 3, Firefox, and Safari. The Leopard
machine is almost always running Camino, Firefox, Mail, NetNewsWire,
TextSoap, TextWrangler, KompoZer, Photoshop Elements, and sometimes
Safari, Bean, and rarely Microsoft Word.

My thinking: Although the MDD has more RAM, the faster CPU and better
video card make the Digital Audio the better choice for Leopard. I
don't do anything that really taxes the graphics (no gaming), but I
recently picked up a 22 Apple Cinema Display for a song. It's an ADC
monitor, so I'm limited to Apple AGP video cards with ADC support.

I'm looking for suggestions for a better video card that's also very
affordable. This would also let me swap the Radeon 9000 back to the
MDD.

Thanks in advance!

2010-10-06 Thread Alex
I was looking for a video card for my Quicksilver and so from my
findings on eBay the best card that you can get that has ADC support
is the ATI Radeon 7500. I found one on eBay for $30 although the LEM
swap list might have better deals.

I have been running 9600's in my DAs. One with 64mb and 1 with 128mb
of ram. Not as affordable as the 7500, but significantly faster. And
if you have a lot of windows open or icons on the desktop, the speed
is noticeable.

Re: Video card advice for MDD and/or Digital Audio

2010-10-06 Thread Ashgrove
Dan,

I have seen very reasonably priced ATI Radeon 9800s on eBay --the only
caveat being that they are flashed and you would need an ADC to DVI
adapter. Equally flashed Nvidia 6200s used to be readily available for
a song, but apparently supplies have run low.

There are several 8x cards made for AGP G5s with ADC support that may
be used taping a couple of connectors, so that's another avenue to
consider.

For Leopard, though, another Radeon 9000 can give you very decent
performance without Core Image eye candy, and it should be able to
drive the 22 ACD. They are cheaper and easier to find, and support
ADC. Just my two cents.

Good luck,

Felix
