Absolutely, recently purchased a MDD and while unpacking it a dust bunny about
the size of a mouse (the rodent) fell out.

When I opened the MDD up the inside was really dusty. Before I attempted to
start it up, I blew all the internals out with the shop's air compressor. Now
it is nearly as quiet as a cat that only makes noises when it needs to; you get
the idea.

Look for a bunch of dust below the Garth Vader grill and also the dust in and
around the power supply. And clean out all the dust you can find --glen

I have been able to peel back the sticker in the center of the hub very
carefully and a little drop of olive oil will usually do it. Not all the fans
have the sticker.

Re: g4 mdd getting louder?

2012-03-20 Thread David W. Morris
My MDD was not quiet even after a good cleaning. In fact it was so
noisy, it was uncomfortable to use it. I finally found a "Silent" fan
to replace the main fan inside the dual 1.25GHz G4 MDD. It was only
about 3/4 as many CFM's as the original fan, but made a huge
difference in the sound level. I removed the PSU fans and ran them
outside the computer, but found that they did not produce much noise,
so I put them back into the PSU and left them in my MDD. I did not
check to see how noisy the small case fan is, but now after replacing
the big fan that blows through the G4 CPU modules heat sink, I am
satisfied with the noise level and don't mind using my G4 MDD.

My stock Apple Copper heat sink just arrived today, so that should
help keep things cooler than the Aluminum heat sink would have. If
you have an older model MDD that has the Aluminum, or Tin on Aluminum
block heat sinks and you decide to get a "Silent" fan like I did, I
would suggest that you also obtain an Apple Copper heat sink that came
installed on the dual 1.42GHz G4 PowerMac MDD model. When looking for
a quiet or "Silent" fan to replace the main fan in your MDD, check the
CFM's and get one that has a number as close to the stock fan's CFM
number, with the lowest sound number (db's).

Good Luck,

Apple's PSUs are pretty good, but they are obviously built to a
competitive price point. Usually in Hong Kong, Taiwan or, now, mainland
China.

NO high-cost components as would be found on, say, an IBM mainframe
computer PSU, which cost in the thousands or tens of thousands, just for
the PSU.

In particular, the cooling fans are generic and are standard-sized.

Replaceable with any generic fan of the same dimensions (by now, almost
everyone is making such fans in just a very few sizes). Heck, even the
fasteners are standardized.

However, such replacement fans come with "pig-tails", so you will have to
cut off and solder the Apple connector cable remnant to the replacement
fan.

Clean out the dust.

Dust Bunnies. 'Tis the season. Skipped winter, but the cats are
starting to molt anyway. After seeing this thread, I suddenly
realized the noise from my QS is *not* a HD - it's probably the fan.
Time to get out the suckolux and go bunny slaying.

Had to pop half the keycaps off my keyboard a month ago. The woven
fur mat lifted right off. Now my space bar etc all work great.

Certainly, the dust check is the first thing to do.
I've had several MDDs using (without problems) this free developer
software:
CHUD Tools 3.5.2. Later versions of "CHUD" don't seem to work for this
purpose.
Install then access via System Preferences. You can allow "nap" mode
and single processor without noticeable decline in performance. Search
Accelerate Your Mac site for details on use in MDD. I get a 40 to 50
degree F. drop in temperature without any hardware changes. I also
like Temperature monitor (another freebie.)
