Summary: Bad import of old accounts.xml

Initial Comment:
PROBLEM:I previously used Gaim 1.5.0 on Ubuntu, but am now trying to 2.0 beta 6.

Booting up Gaim without flushing ~/.gaim causes me to be unable to login to my
AIM account. The groups and (cached?) buddy lists can be seen, but it cannot
log in.

DIAGNOSIS: Comparing the old and new accounts.xml shows that, in Gaim 1.5.0, an
AIM account uses
prpl-oscar

whereas Gaim 2.0 beta 6 uses
prpl-aim

Changing the contents of the protocol tag in accounts.xml fixes the problem.

SUGGESTED FIX: Gaim should automatically recognize the obsolete "prpl-oscar"
and change it to "prpl-aim" when it loads accounts.xml. Though deleting and
re-adding the account solved the problem, Gaim should really fix this
automatically.

NOTES: This problem has NOT been checked against the trunk branch, as trunk
just dumps core on me.

As of trunk revision 18212, this bug results in a CRASH on startup.

Specifically, when is "prpl-oscar", Gaim trunk crashes on
startup. If the field is changed to "prpl-aim", Gaim works fine.

Attached is a stack trace.
File Added: stacktrace-18212.txt

Summary: All text, menus, and icons becoming invisible.

Initial Comment:
I am using Windows XP Professional and I recently switched to the 2.0.0 beta 6
version of GAIM when my problem started happening in the 1.5.0 version (I was
worried about whether I'd lose my settings and log files & delaying my switch
to a beta version).

After several minutes of use all the text, menus, and icons become invisible.
If I remember where they are, I can still use them (such as clicking in the
text box on the chat window and typing a message and hitting enter), but I
can't SEE anything other than grey outlines of the background. I can see the
different shades of grey representing the message window, the text box, and the
menu bar (nothing else). Once everything greys out, the only way I can view
the messages I've just sent or received is to open the log file of the
conversation. The sounds still work for sending an receiving messages. I can
temporarily see my text/menus/icons again when I restart GAIM, but after a
minute they're invisible again. Things don't go invisible on the buddy list
and chat window at the same time, although they eventually both go blank and
minimizing and maximizing doesn't fix it. GAIM isn't crashing, it's just
becoming very difficult to use. It doesn't seem to matter whether I'm s
ending/receiving MSN, Yahoo, or AIM messages (or even a combination) when the
error occurs.

I tried rebooting my computer several times as well as restarting GAIM. I
don't know what other information you might need or what else I can try to fix
this on my own. I spent about 4 hours skimming through the bugs list here as
well as the Users Helping Users forum to see if anyone else had posted a
similar problem, but didn't see anything similar.

Are you using a weird theme or windowblinds or something?
Please post a screenshot of the problem

I installed the newer GTK+ version then rebooted my computer for good
measure. Now my problem has changed slightly. Instead of seeing the grey
background it turns completely black. I still get the tooltips, can access
menus, and type messages if I remember where everything is.

Summary: flashes too much on new message.

Initial Comment:
OS: Windows XP

When I enable Flash window when IM is recived in Preferences->conversation the
window flashes continiusly till i click on it or on the main gaim window.

However it should stop flashin if I have enabled prevent applications from
stealing focus -> flash taskbar button 3 times in (General -> Focus) Tweak UI
of XP powertoys.

So the expected behavior is when the focus is on some other window and i get a
message in a minimized window the window should flash for 3 times and stop.
This is not so, it keeps flashing till i click it. How do I stop this? I do not
want to disable the option of flashing totally.

Hi datallah, thanks for your prompt response.

I tried disabling taskbar flashing and enabling "raise conversation
window". It never flashed, and seemed to have no effect. I also tried
enabling flashing and "raise conversation window" and it dint help.

I also had another question, is there a way I can the a new message
window(when I get a new IM) minimized to the taskbar(and flash) instead of
the current option of to the system tray (a bubble on the gaim icon). I am
facing this problem because I have autohide taslbar enabled because of
which I cant see the new message but I do not want all messages to popup
too...

This would be a nice feature to have in future, if many people want it :)
Thanks for your time again.

As lschiere mentioned, the "prevent focus stealing" has nothing to do with
gaim's window flashing. Gaim is flashing the window and not focusing it.

You're asking for a feature that doesn't exist.

It *may* be possible to get the Tweak UI flash 3 times to kick in if you
disable gaim's built-in taskbar flashing and use the "Message Notification"
plugin to "Raise conversation window" - since that will effectively be
"stealing focus."

flashing has nothing to do with "stealing" focus.

The above behavior works with Yahoo messenger (conversation window flashes
3 times and stops)

I'm running a Dell laptop using Windows XP SP2. I install these files and

Summary: libglib-2.0-0.dll

Initial Comment:
when accessing either of my hotmail accounts at the point that it says 'getting
cookies' it crashes

I installed these files from your site:
gtk-runtime-2.6.10-rev-a.exe
&
gaim-1.5.0-no-gtk.exe

I'm running a Dell laptop using Windows XP SP2. I install these files and
setup my ICQ account. Then i try to connect to msn and that happens.

Yup, that is what i was looking for. It isn't the problem that I was
thinking of.

Try using GTK+ 2.10.11
(http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gaim/gtk-runtime-2.10.11-rev-a.exe),
there are a number of fixes in the included WIMP theme that might be the
cause.

"Are your tabs set to something other than "on-top" ?"

Under Tools > Preferences > "Interface" tab:

Tabs:
"Show IMs and chats in tabbed windows" is checked
"Show close button on tabs" is checked
"Placement" is set to "Top"
"New conversations" is set to "Last created window"

Is that what you're looking for?

Summary: Memory leak in gaim-2.0.0beta6

Initial Comment:
There seems to be a memory leak in gaim-2.0.0beta6 that does not effect
usability, but continues to eat up resources until the system starts paging.
Windows XP SP2 Fully Patched, Gaim Idles at ~30 MB ram until you start IM'ing
people, and then ive seen it go all the way up to 400+MB.
4msn accounts, 3aim, doesn't seem to matter which sorting method (there use to
be a leak with sort by log size) or which account has the Messaging window
open.

Reverted to gaim-2.0.0beta5 and this seemed to fix the problem, but AIM
accounts showed up as '(unknown) account type' until you reset them.

Any other info I can provide?

Thanks

Ben

Try disabling spellchecking (Preferences->Conversations->Highlight
misspelled words) and see if that makes a difference.

Are you using the same GTK+ version as beta6 (2.10.7) (Help-About) when
you revert to beta5?

Do you have your Tab Placement somewhere other than "on top"?

Summary: Gaim Stops Responding

Initial Comment:
I have Gaim 2.0.0 Beta 6 installed on a Vista Ultimate 64 bit version OS. Gaim
seems to run without any problems but I have issues making a connection to MSN.
I have a co-worker that uses Gaim 2.0.0 Beta 5 who is logged in under MSN, but
I cannot seem to make a connection. And when I try to modify any account Vista
Reports that GAIM has stopped responding. I have tried installing and
re-installing to no avail. A fix would be appreciated.

Pardon my idiotacy. I mis-typed the file name. I deleted the file from
the plugins folder and I am able to modify accounts now. As far as the MSN
connection error messages it seems to be working now and I will open
another inquiry if you would like to close this one. Thank you for your
assistance.

If you have gaim installed, you certainly do have a liboscar.dll (and if
you are experiencing the bug I linked to (which you must likely are), then
you have two copies). Look in the directory where you installed gaim
(there *will* be a liboscar.dll there - leave it there); in the plugins
subdirectory there will probably be another liboscar.dll (with an older
modification date than the rest of the files in there), that is the file
that you need to get rid of.

I do not have the file specified anywhere on my computer - liboscar.dll.

As far as the error when connecting to MSN, it just says that can't
connect ... I'll keep track of the Debug Log from this point forward and
update when I have more info.

Don't mess with the priority, please.

The crashing when trying to modify an account is this issue:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=100235&aid=1652642&group_id=235

As far as inability to connect to MSN, what does the debug log
(Help->Debug Window) say when you try to connect?

OS: Windows XP

When I enable Flash window when IM is recived in Preferences->conversation the

However it should stop flashin if I have enabled prevent applications from

So the expected behavior is when the focus is on some other window and i get a
message in a minimized window the window should flash for 3 times and stop.
This is not so, it keeps flashing till i click it. How do I stop this? I do not
want to disable the option of flashing totally.

The above behavior works with Yahoo messenger (conversation window flashes
3 times and stops)

Summary: Characters trimmed while using ClearType

Initial Comment:
Running 2.0.0 beta 6 under US English Windows XP with the WIMP GTK theme.

Several characters appear to have lost the last column of pixels, most commonly
\, |, and / (see 12:38:42 AM line in attached screenshot). Font is set to 8pt
Tahoma (regular).

Whenever ClearType font smoothing is turned off, the behavior subsides.

Additionally, while Unicode is properly displayed in the tab titles, it shows
up as ???'s in the window title.

This is caused by a cairo bug in Cairo 1.2.4.
It is fixed in newer versions. If you upgrade to GTK+ 2.10.11 (available
here: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gaim/gtk-runtime-2.10.11-rev-a.exe),
this will stop happening.

Summary: Gaim Buddy List Widens itself continually

Initial Comment:
I have recently compiled the Beta 6 version on Gentoo.

If this helps, these are the Gentoo USE flags I've used.

net-im/gaim-2.0.0_beta6 USE="crypt dbus gtk msn nls perl spell ssl
xscreensaver -avahi -bonjour -cjk -console -custom-cflags -debug -doc -eds
-gadu -gnutls -groupwise -gstreamer -meanwhile -mono -qq -sasl -silc
-startup-notification -tcl -tk"

I log in to 4 accounts with Gaim, my Gmail Jabber, AIM, MSN, and Yahoo.

During most of the day, I leave an Away message up on all accounts except
Yahoo, which I leave as invisible.

When I come back to my computer, I click on the tray icon to see the buddy
list. If my Yahoo account has received email, the buddy list will say at the
top "You have email" and widen itself horizontally. But it keeps doing this.
The first time I didn't know what was going on, and it widened itself to almost
three times my screen resolution (which is 1024 pixels wide). The only way to
make it stop is to click on where it says "You have email".

So far this has happened every time I'm away and receive email.

I was unsure if I should place this bug report with you guys, or with the
Gentoo developers... But it seems to me like this is a bug in Gaim code.

It's a minor annoyance; I'm sure you all have more important things to be
working on, but I thought I would just bring this to your attention.

Thank you

Summary: Blinking status icon on unread message behavior confusing

Initial Comment:
The old behavior of the plugin was that if someone sends you an IM, the taskbar
icon only flashes if you don't already have an IM window open with that person.
The new behavior is that it flashes whenever you have an IM from anyone, even
if you have an open window (that is minimized or shaded) with that contact. I
really don't like that, and would like an option to only make the taskbar icon
blink when I get a new message from someone I DON'T have a window open with. I
rely on other notification methods (like having an asterisk in the title bar of
the IM window from the Message Notification plugin) to show me that I've
received an IM from someone with whom I'm already chatting.

I'm using GAIM 2.0.0beta5 on RHEL4 in GNOME. I have these plugins enabled:
* Buddy State Notification
* History
* Message Notification
* Release Notification

I would be fine having what I've requested not be the default behavior,
but having an option for it in Preference | Interface | System Tray Icon.
For instance, something like "Only notify on messages from buddies you're
not currently chatting with". Would that be acceptable? It seems reasonable
to have this as an option.

What you are describing was the 1.5 behavior of the docklet. There were
feature requests for the current behavior, so I added the current behavior
in as a preference. When the docklet moved from plugin to core, the prefs
were cut and this behavior was chosen. So the question is whether to change
the behavior back to blink only for unread messages on hidden
conversations, to add the pref back in, or to keep the current behavior.
I'm happy to submit the patch to do either of these, but would rather here
from a core dev or two as to whether they want to include such a patch.
There was a discussion on gaim-devel when these prefs were slashed.

To clarify on why it's nice to have this feature, I use the system tray
icon to let me know if I'm getting a message from a contact that I'm not
chatting with. I find it distracting to see it blinking when it's simply
indicating that there is a conversation going on in a chat window that I
already have open, because I use the Message Notification plugin settings
to tell me that I'm getting a message from someone I'm already chatting
with. I consider it a separate thing to be notified when a new person is
IM'ing me. Thanks!

The option when right-clicking is to flash on a new message. There is no
specific option to only flash when a new message comes from a buddy who
you are not chatting with already.

Summary: away buddies are displayed in black

Initial Comment:
I have my GTK+ theme set to display all text in white with black backgrounds.
However, in Gaim, away buddies are displayed in *black* (which, on a normal
theme, looks exactly the same as available buddies) which I cannot read and
which makes my buddy list look terrible. This functionality changes nothing for
users with a black-on-white theme. I am also absolutely sure that this is not a
problem with my theme, as I have tried other non-black-on-white themes that
don't have black anywhere in them and they also display away buddies in black.
If there is some workaround or fix I have yet to find it.

Initial Comment:
Sometimes Gaim will stop logging messages in a conversation. When I look at the
log file the next day, it ends in the middle of a conversation; the whole tail
end is missing. Intermittent problem, but it has happened several times in the
last month. 2.0.0 beta 5 on Fedora Core 4.

Possibly related to bug 1662722 ?

Summary: Conversations logged into the wrong file, "crosstalk"

Initial Comment:
Hi,
I was chatting with a friend (call him "A") and another friend ("B") sent me a
message. Later I look in my logs with B, and I see some of the things I said to
and from A in that file! And even some system log entries (someone going
offline, that someone being C).

I also looked into my logs with B (using a web browser since it's HTML) and I
see some of things A said ended up there.

It feels like Gaim (or somebody) is mixing up the file-handles, badly. This is
on Windows 2000 (NTFS), And yes, my logs directory is pretty large. Anyone care
to venture a guess as to what might be happening?

Not just a Windows issue. This also happens to me running 2.0.0 beta5 on
Fedora2. Frequently the tail end of a conversation is just missing (not
showing up in any log file), but sometimes it is written to the log file of
another conversation.

For people I chat with frequently, I often leave the conversation windows
open in tabs, with my friends disconnecting and reconnecting several times
in the same conversation window.

I've had the same issue. I have Windows XP Pro and was online with both my
AIM and Yahoo accounts. My logs are saved as text. I cut and pasted the
conversations in the right logs and found that some of them were missing.
Most of the non-missing logs were in a log of someone I was talking to at
the same time. I didn't find the missing logs. I don't know if they ended
up on earlier logs or just disappeared. I checked logs of everyone I talked
to that day. As I look at my logs a lot, I haven't use GAIM for anything
but AIM since. So I only have a this one occurrence to report.

I can confirm this (I am on linux). I haven't seen any pattern for this
bug showing up.

Summary: UTF-8 in away messages isn´t displayed correctly

Initial Comment:
When I look at away messages with special german
characters inside it, they´re displayed as 2 garbage
characters. My system locale is set to UTF-8, so it
looks like UTF-8 is displayed where ANSI is assumed.

I also have this problem with Hebrew away-messages (in either encoding).

I have the a similar problem with hebrew away messages in
ICQ even when I change ICQ encoding to utf-8 (I'm using
iso-8859-8) and restart gaim.
I'm sure this is utf-8 related because the type of
"gibberish" I see is typical to hebrew utf-8 messages
encoded incorrectly.
looks something like this:
׳™׳© ׳œ׳™ ׳“׳ ׳›׳×׳•׳ ׳•׳׳ ׳™
׳œ׳ ׳ž׳™׳×׳ ׳—׳œ׳× ׳׳
׳™ ׳ž׳©׳‘׳˜ ׳”׳¢׳•׳ž

oh. then they aren't necessarily UTF-8 at all. what is your
encoding set to in your account options?

I don´t talk about my away message, I mean the away messages
of other ICQ users.
They´re using the regular Windows ICQ client.
