Summary: ICQ should not switch Privacy on Status change

Initial Comment:
Hi,

This is half a feature req, half a bug report - and I
also only try to suggest a resolution, not patching it,
as I'm not familiar with GAIM codebase.

So, the current GAIM 2.0 cvs situation is the
following: if I switch from one ICQ status to another
(say to DND from Occupied), my ICQ privacy status
changes to "Block only the users below". As that list
is empty for me, everyone is suddenly allowed to
connect me.

Well I think the culprit is somewhere in this region:
oscar.c:6598-6601
In my opinion the privacy status set in the else branch
should be something selected by the user, not something
always chosen by default.

I changed the else branch to "account->perm_deny =
GAIM_PRIVACY_ALLOW_BUDDYLIST;" for myself, but it
really should be a preference somewhere.

Also on a separate note, it would be nice to implement
disabling the status display on the ICQ webpages.

Thanks for looking into this.
BR
Mark

Closing this for the reasons mentioned in my previous comment. Better
privacy support is on our list of things to do, so there's no need for
another feature request about it. And the ability to disable the status
display on the ICQ webpages will exist in Pidgin 2.0.0, once it's released.
It can be toggled from Accounts->ICQ #->Set Privacy Options.

This is intentional. It's how the official ICQ clients
behave. For ICQ, the privacy setting determines your
visibility/invisibility.

To make it seem less stupid we need a new privacy API.

Initial Comment:
When logged into the ICQ with Gaim, my status is set
to n/a (not available) from the web
(http://www.icq.com/features/web/indicator.html).

In the original ICQ client 5.0, there is an option
which let me allow to enable seeing my status from the
web: 'Allow others to view my Online/Offline status
from the Web'. If I disable this option I appear as
offline from the web, if I enable this option, I
appear as online from the web.

I would siuggest to implement this option into Gaim.

This option exists in Pidgin MTN and will exist in Pidgin 2.0.0, once it's
released. To change it, go to Accounts->ICQ#->Set Privacy Options...

Meebo use the Jabber protocol
it is possibile to use Meebo with gaim

what it's not possible is to use it with MeeboMe Widget

this widget is a peace of embedded Flash player that you can add in your blog
or in your web site

who enter your site can chat with you without knowing your credential!

can choose a nick name and see your online status

with game you get a request of authorization every times somebody refresh or
change position in your web page

plus the nick name choose by the guest user is not taken..
this mean that when the page get reloaded the user name change too.. and you
didn't know who are you talking with

if you log into the meebo web site all work good..

there's no chat client around, but the meebo web page, capable of doing this

thanks

Interesting. Yeah, you have to sign up for it. Well, more accurately it
only works with your @meebo.org Jabber account, and only when you create a
widget and embed it somewhere on your web page.

I haven't looked at MeeboMe in great detail, but I imagine you have to
sign up for it somewhere, and there's some place you can turn it off. If
all of the above is true, then I see no reason not to auto-authorize, as
the authorization is just an implementation detail. If your web client
auto-authorizes the meebome widgets, I see no reason for it not to happen
on the server, so any Jabber client can be used w/o modification.

BTW, the site linked here to DLLs that auto-authorize doesn't have any
source posted for the DLLs. Someone should ask nicely.

my 3c (inflation, y'all understand). Following from the stance that one
should never fully rely on any protcol's servers to be totally safe with
regards to privacy, it should be a client side preference whether the
client can trust server auto-authentication (the default should be to not
trust the server). E.g., I've logged in to do some work, I don't want to be
spammed with messages from people commenting on my blog, so I disable it. I
get home from work, and enable it while casually browsing the 'net.

The problem, as I see it, is that there's no interaction between the
client and the servers whereby the user gets to decide whether they want
auto-authentication on (or for that matter, one could consider any
'advanced' server side privacy). Nor does the server get to explain why
such a feature might be useful to the user.

Gah, I really need to mess with the jabber spec some day. I might be able
to speak without my donkey being involved.

It would be nice to have "View Log" by right clicking on a tab. It's just a
little bit more convenient then Conversation - View Log.

Also, it would be nice that when my previously requested feature is implemented
for view all logs. If View All Logs was displayed by right clicking on any tab.
(that is not as logical as the above method, but regardless it would make the
process of accessing logs much faster)

In reading the comments about this, it seems that this would be an easy
fix, yet more than two years later, it's still not implemented?

I have an issue where I have a secondary screen to the left of my main
monitor, which is turned off when I'm not using it. It's frustrating when
a new window opens and I don't happen to notice the icon on the taskbar...
That window could sit there for hours before I notice it.

Even the ability to specify WHERE to create new windows (manually) would
be better than 0,0...

#1035207

Notable comments:
it would be great if GAIM remembers the last used
window layout. I do not mean the actual positioning of
the windows here (though this would be great as well)
but the height of the input bar and the width of the
user list. For my personal taste they are far to large,
as I'm used to keep the chat window on the bottom of my
screen, with two or three lines of text visible above
the input bar.

I've noticed that in 1.2.1 and 1.3.0 the conversation
windows was created at 0x0 on the desktop (equal to 0x0 on
the most left screen). From 1.3.1 to 1.5.0 the conversation
window is created on the primary screen and at YxZ. (I don't
know the exact value of Y.Z)

It would be nice if the position of conversation windows is
saved. While the size of the conversation window is already
saved, his position would be a trivial patch. I fill a
request feature.

Moving from bugs to feature requests.
I have a vague plan on how to do this, I should probably
work with shx on it, I think I talked to him a little bit
before.

Basicly I want to write a small set of HTTP functions for
prpls to use. Well we already have one now but it's not
flexable enough for this. I probably need something like
gaim_http_post(), possibly others.

The things these functions would do special is, check if an
http proxy is being used and if so, talk to it directly
instead of using gaim_proxy_connect(). gaim_proxy_connect()
has to be able to handle any tcp data stream, and so has to
use the connect method. But gaim_http_post() knows its
speaking http, and can send commands like post directly to
the proxy.

Of course I only have limited understanding of http proxies,
so something in here might be wrong.

Summary: IRC account lost on exit: same server, different ports

Initial Comment:
Gaim's IRC account handling does not make any
distinction between the same server with different
ports. The Accounts dialog allows two accounts to be
created with the same IRC server and different ports.
I can add the chat to my list for each Account.
However, I can only join one of the chats.
Double-clicking the other chat does nothing. This
might indicate that Gaim thinks I am already connected.
Upon client exit, only the last account created is
remembered. So perhaps IRC accounts are distinguished
only by server name, which is incorrect.

The test case is on irc.freenode.net, where the stable
server is on port 6667, and the test server is on port
9001. I want to help with the load testing, but I
can't be on both networks.

Your summary of "clean" is pretty accurate. Basically, it
needs to "fit in" with the other Gaim code, and it shouldn't
do anything too horrible. I can't even begin to enumerate
"horrible" things, because previous submitted patches have
shown me that my imagination is not powerful enough.

As far as backwards compatible, I'm really only concerned
that a Gaim using [EMAIL PROTECTED]:port does something reasonable
when it encounters a [EMAIL PROTECTED] entry with a separate port
item as gaim currently behaves. This makes upgrading Gaim
just Do the Right Thing, and people don't need to notice
what's happened. Going the other direction is probably
impossible.

I'm willing to at least try to understand enough about Gaim
to patch this. But I do not know what you mean by "a good,
clean patch" and "backwards compatible with old account files".

I guess the easier question to quantify is "how old"? If
it's just a matter of me downloading an older version of
Gaim (and GTK), and setting those up so I get old files,
then I can just keep a copy of them, and use a copy to test
in the patch. So how old? I don't suppose the config files
store the Gaim version anywhere to make compatibility
detection easier?

A good, clean patch, I can only begin to guess. I would
assume that it must allow building flawlessly and no runtime
crashes in at least Windows and Linux, that the new code be
formatted like the rest, that it's a collection of diff -U
patches or a single diff -rU patch, and that it does what it
intends, and doesn't do what it didn't intend. Beyond that,
is there a specific test suite or procedure to follow? Or
are there any other meanings impled by good & clean?

As Luke described, Gaim only distinguishes two IRC accounts
by nick and server host; therefore, if you wanted to use a
different port on the same host, you would have to use a
different nick.

I am not interested in further complicating matters by
involving the port number in this. If I got a good, clean
patch to do so, I would accept it. (Note that it has to be
backwards compatible with old account files!) In my
opinion, the bug which should be fixed here is that Gaim is
apparently allowing you to create two accounts between which
it cannot distinguish; this certainly sounds erroneous to me.

Oh, I didn't notice this had been moved from Bugs to Feature
Request. To me, this is a bug, (albeit by design), as it
doesn't handle a perfectly valid case.

Summary: Show remote account name in conversation window

Initial Comment:
It would be nice to be able to see the original
(account) name of a given contact in a conversation
window. This is specially true of MSN, where people
love changing their custom buddy name every so often.

In the buddy list, you can hover over the buddy name to
find out which account it is associated to, but there
is no equivalent feature in conversation windows. When
some person with a weird name messages me, I often have
to go to the buddy list to find out who (s)he is, which
is irritating.

Possible places to add that information would be at the
top of the conversation window, at the beginning of the
window name, or in the tooltip for the avatar.

Keep up the good work!

You can set a local alias for each buddy. Gaim will show
that alias instead of the custom name. Right-click on the
buddy and select "Alias...".

If you want to see the original account names everywhere,
uncheck "Display remote nicknames if no alias set" in Tools
-> Preferences -> Interface.

It would be great if gaim provide support of multi
users / profiles / identities. Under Windows XP, you
must change user if you want using gaim with another
set of IM accounts.

A profiles manager like thunderbird or trillian would
be great.

You can tell Gaim to use a different set of configuration
files with the -c command-line parameter. "gaim -c
c:\foo\bar" tells it to look for configuration data in the
directory "c:\foo\bar". Not as nice as a profile manager but
the functionality it there.

Summary: Make it easier to switch servers

Initial Comment:
Hi,

previously I used saberhagen.freenode.net to connect to
IRC. Now I think it is better to let
irc.eu.freenode.net decide which regional server I
should connect to. Trying to switch the server was a
pain. If I had just gone the obvious route and changed
the setting in "Tools - Accounts - Modify" I would have
lost all subscribed groups and logs (I did that once).
To prevent that I opened the following files in an
editor: accounts.xml, accels and blist.xml and replaced
every occurence of saberhagen.freenode.net with
irc.eu.freenode.net. Furthermore I renamed the log
directory accordingly. I think this should be easier
to do and via the GUI. I set to category IRC for now
but this might apply to others as well. I also think
this is borderline bug instead of RFE considering the
unexpected result when one goes the "official" route.

Regards

Rolf

Summary: WinGaim: Away Window - Taskbar Flashing

Initial Comment:
This is for the WinGaim plugin:

It would be nice if the away window itself started
flashing in the task bar when you received a message
while away (just like when you receive a message
normally in IM windows)... The flashing away window is
much more visible than the blinking system tray icon.

If possible, this would be a turn-offable option, just
like the other blinking taskbar option... A sort of
"Flash away window when messages are received" option.

Thanks.

Summary: Scroll To Bottom button

Initial Comment:
I think it'd be useful to add a "scroll to bottom"
button in GtkIMHtml objects (or their containers? I'm
not very familiar with the source yet). It could be a
button just below the "scroll down" button on the
scrollbar.

The benefit would be when finished reading a section of
the log/buffer, one could just hit the "scroll to
bottom" button, then the auto-scrolling would once
again take over.

I don't think there's any problem with taking up
valuable screen real estate -- the scrollbar already
takes up enough space, and it'd only be causing the
scrollbar to be made slightly shorter.

Adding comments from #1352175:
Often I do the following when using gaim for IRC: I scroll
up, forget I've done so, then think "odd, why haven't I
received any messages?", do a /ping, seemingly get no
result, and so log out and back into the server.

It would be good if, like in xterm, gaim had an option so
that when you type something in the message window (to be
precise, when you send a message or command), the main pane
automatically scrolls to bottom.

Friends tell me I'm not the only one to have this confusion.

I would want the history plugin to be able to

That is, just as it works currently but with the

Gaim 1.0.2 for GNU/Linux.
I'd like to be able to click on buddy icons in IM
windows and make them stop animating or hide. I know I
can do this by right clicking on them, but it'd be
faster to set an option to do this and then just be
able to left click on them. I also know I could have
them never appear, but I like to take a look at
someone's icon and then make it go away.

i have a friend, and he also has GAIM. We both habve 3

account. Now he is 3 times in my contact list.

It would be usefull to regroup them to one buddy with 3
network icons in front of him. if i open a convercation
i make that with the network that is at the top in the
connection manager. And if i want to send him a file or
i do anything special, GAIM would chose the protocol
that supports this kind of action.

"or an option to IM someone else"
I would sooo love it if Gaim could send my other screenname an IM letting
me know when someone signs on, in the case that I'm online AIM or Yahoo!
Messenger or something with my cell phone. Cuz you know, cell phones don't
let you know when people sign on.
Please consider this as a new feature.

plus there should be more "Pounce Action" options, like get
info, or an option to IM someone else, or an option to set
yourself away, or endless other options, even if this doesn't
become an official feature, it would be nice to see a plugin
for this

we can't do that easily. gtk doesn't support it, and
writing a custom gtknotebook to hold them would be 1)a pain
2)highly bug prone

if IM open and user changes nickname IM still points to
the old nickname.

So what I want is:
on the event someone changes it's nickname.
gaim should check if a IM is open with that nickname.
If so: gaim should let the IM point to the new nickname.

don't want to know everytime that persons logs in or out, as
I do with my buddies.

I have Gaim installed at e:\gaim\. The Windows

should autodetect previous installations and ask if the

this feature is available in some form in MSN Messenger).

Otherwise this is a lovely program :-).

sounds like this would be better implemented through a
plugin rather than a core feature (assuming the API is
present for buddy icon manipulation)

Initial Comment:
Can you please make the text focus on raised IM windows a selectable
option in the preferences?
In this way, every user can choose what is best for them.
I have great problems with the forced focus after having changed from
version 0.79 to 0.81.
Thanks.

Adding comments from #865027 (Uplink - advantis):
At least the win32 version of Gaim does this. I set the
messeges to appear in separate windows, but each new
message pops up on the screen and gains focus too.
There's no option for me to tell Gaim to open the new
windows minimized [even the first tabbed window if I use
tabbed views].

Also, there's an option in the System Tray Icon plugin
options section that allows me to set Gaim to blink in the
system tray on new message, but when it does that it
makes no sound.

---
Adding comments from #981924 (carbonize - carbonize):
I'm using Gaim on windows. I have it set to use a new
window for each IM. Everytime I get a new IM window
created it steals focus which can be a pain when you
are busy typing something and you look up to see that
most of it's just ended up in the IM window.

When re-reading an AIM chat-log, i noticed that there
were strikeouts used, but they weren't shown in the
chat window, same thing when using strikeouts in IM
conversations with AIM users. (They're just shown as
regular text)

So, yeah, would be nice if that feature could be added
sometime, heh.

Thanks. ^^

FYI, strikeouts along with a number of other tags are
stubbed in gtkimhtml.c around line 2090 or so.

Perhaps strikeout, sub, and sup could be implemented and
added as buttons to the gtkimhtmltoolbar.

This used to be a feature when we didn't have a WYSIWYG text
interface. Back then you could use subscripts,
superscripts, and strike outs. But now we can't.

Initial Comment:
If someone signs off, puts up an away message, or goes
idle, the name in the tab goes gray which is a very
nice feature. It would be cool if the tab went black if
they sign on or return from being away/idle.

Also, in IRC, it would also be convenient to have more
control over tab colors. In a room with many people,
people constantly come and go and make the tab go gray.
It would be nice to not have join/parts change the
color. Or another idea, only go red if someone
specifically says your name rather than say anything at
all.

This applies also to similar dialogs:

  - Get user ingo
  - View user log
  - Add buddy
  - Add chat
  - Room list
Hopefully these all share a common chunk of code.

Initial Comment:
I looked around and did not see any feature requests
like this:
I think it would be neat to possibly have an option for
gaim to send what your typing as you type it. of course
you don't want to send each letter separately but
possibly the user your chatting with will see what your
typing in say a different color. So many times I am
chatting with someone and we end up sending the same
message, if we could just see what we are each typing
it would save a little bit of time. of course this
might be protocol specific and might have to be
implemented in jabber or something first, I don't know.
Wish I could lower the priority on this, oh well.

I am sure that the official ICQ client for Windows used to (still does?)
support this, but I think it was only for ICQ's chat mode (sort of like a
direct connection on IRC instead of relaying /msg's between the servers, I
guess), not regular instant messages.

As long as I know support for this is absolutely up to the
chat protocol and the marchine doing the service itself. As
long as there's no support on the server side, its a really
hard thing to do.
On the second hand I'm not sure that this can be secure
enough :-)

I'd like to see more options or better functionality in
the gaim system log. For example, it would be more
useful in my situation to see one log per day that
combined all the protocols and all the logons/logouts
for that day rather than splitting it up into several
different ones.

I also have noticed that my own logons/logouts don't
always appear and that my away status is never logged,
but this could be something I'm doing/seeing wrong, so
ignore this part of the RFE if it's something on my end.

Thanks.

Summary: Strip Whitespace in Request Fields

Initial Comment:
I can't seem to add the following buddy to my gaim
list: jrobinsonIMS7308

When I try to add this buddy I get a popup window with
the title "Unable To Add" and the body of the dialog
box (with a Close button) says:

"Could not add buddy jrobinsonIMS7308 because the
screen name is invalid. Screen names must either start
with a letter and contain only letters, numbers and
spaces, or contain only numbers."

However in the dialog box you can see a space between
the 8 and the word "because". Check the attached file
for a display.

I found the problem! I am cutting/pasting the buddy
name from Thunderbird. I'm cutting pasting by just
doing double-click on the word. It seems it's picking
up something at the end that I can't see.

I would suggest that the window that's taking the buddy
name ignore white spaces and control characters that
might appear at the beginning/end of the name. It's
quite confusing since the message looks ok and the
buddy name looks ok, yet you still get that popup window.

It would be nice to be able to browse and search all
logs, in addition to the per-account/per-user
functionality that is already present.

Also, since this would involve sifting through more data,
perhaps some way to limit the date range of the search
would be useful? This could make the search alot faster.

There have been requests like this (805197,945503)
before, but I don't believe any of them requested the
search ability, just browsing.

just a ping on this..

I've written a script to generate a BLT file from my company
phone book to populate the buddy list.

The BLT import is the only reason I keep the AOL cilient around!

Summary: Password manager for IM logins

Initial Comment:
Any possibility of providing an implementation of, or
option to link into, the Mozilla Software Security Device?

I think that a lot get gaim to remember passwords for
them and those are stored in plaintext on the computer.
I have about 4 accounts, however, so entering one
master password would be a great intermediate position
between the security of entering them by hand and the
convenience of storing them.

Obviously one wouldn't want gaim to need the Mozilla
suite to function, but it would save coding something
that wasn't the focus of the project and it would allow
gaim to benefit from advances made in that software.

I wish that Mozilla, KDE KWallet manufacturers and
Gnome could come together and work on a Universal
Password Manager so that smaller apps like this could
more easily benefit from their security and the user
had one program to deal with that was actually secure.
It would also encourage development of a decent
interface to that (Gui, palm pilot syncs etc); but
dreams are free and often useless!

If someone can run malicious software as your user account,
you're sunk. Period. That said, I don't object to having
optional (via a plugin, for example) support for a password
manager. I agree that a standard would be nice. Someone
should totally start on that. :)

I also support the idea of adding a password manager in Gaim.

Yes, in the Gaim project page
(http://gaim.sourceforge.net/plaintextpasswords.php), there
is an explanation of why password encryption is not included
(and not planed to be included) in Gaim. However, I think
that's out-of-dated and does not apply to current situation.

Most IM protocols are in plain text, but not all. For
example Jabber supports TLS. And there may be more in coming
future as more people are concerning the security. The
account.xml file may be the only place the IM passwords are
stored clear text for this type of protocol.

Moreover, IM nowadays is not just simply an IM. They usually
exist as part of an integrated service with single logon
credential. Google account, Yahoo! account and the .NET
passport are examples of these. Therefore it is more
difficult to use separate passwords for IM accounts.
Exposing the passwords of them means also exposure of your
web mails, blogs, album, and etc.

Access control to the account.xml file could be one of the
workarounds. However it is not secure enough since attacker
may use malicious programs running at current user privilege
to get the file. File system level encryption (e.g. EFS of
Windows) won't work. Yes, users may use their own program to
encrypt the account.xml file but firstly this is not
user-friendly, secondly, as stated in the Gaim project page,
this is not a good solution who always have their IM on
(most people do now).

All in all, to enhance the user-friendliness and the
security of Gaim, there is a need to implement a password
manager so that:
1) user can only log on once with their master password
2) IM account passwords are not stored clear text on the
file system

Solutions can be something like how Mozilla
Firefox/Thunderbird does.

Summary: Networks dialog (multiple proxy settings for each account)

Initial Comment:
Make gaim accounts have different proxy settings
depending on the current network.

Please suggest ideas if there are easier ways to solve
this problem.

Problem:
I have a laptop I use in lots of different networks,
some of them require a proxy while others don't. I have
a lot of accounts and some of them should use a proxy
while others don't.
I'd like to have a form where I configure networks and
depending on the networks some accounts use a proxy or
other proxy.

For example:

Networks:
Home (selected)
Work

Every account would have two proxy settings Work and
Home and I set the proxy I want for every account.
Accounts:
PersonalMSN:Home: Direct , Work: ProxyLocal
PersonalAIM:Home: Direct , Work: ProxyLocal
PerosnalJabber: Home: Direct , Work: ProxyLocal
WorkMSN: Home: Home: ProxyLocal , Work: ProxyWork
WorkJabber: Home: ProxyLocal , Work: Direct

Proxies:
Direct: no proxy
ProxyLocal: 127.0.0.1:3128
ProxyWork: proxy.work.com:3128

It would be pretty nifty if there was a pounce option
for the event "receive message" to do an operation such
as play a sound.

If its set to play a sound, it should override the
current set message sound, so you could:

a) customize the message recieved sound for various people
b) have certain people's messages still trigger a sound
when you are set to away

There could also be an option to set the "receive
message" event to be triggered on away, not on away, or
both

Summary: OSCAR: Disable the Send button if we are over the rate limit

Initial Comment:
I am not sure whether this is just the implementation
of the protocol, or something gaim does by itself (and
not sure whether to post in bugs or feature requests).
When i try to send two messages pretty close together
in time (like, within half a second, maybe?) the second
message does not get sent and i get this error:
Unable to send message: Rate to client
and i have to resend.

if this is just something gaim does independent of the
protocol, then - why is it there and can we please
remove or have option to disable?

if it is the protocol, then can gaim just delay the
sending of the second (and possibly subsequent)
messages by however many milliseconds required for the
second message to come through?

it is quite annoying when i have a fast-paced
short-phrased conversation with someone.

using gaim 1.1.2 on win xp sp2.

Message:

The limitation is imposed by the protocol and can not be
disabled.

There are 2 things Gaim could do to avoid this problem:
1. Queue messages for a short amount of time and send them
when we're sure they will be sent successfully
2. Not allow the user to click on "send" until we're sure
the message will be sent successfully (I strongly prefer
this one)

However, both of this fixes would require us to know the
formula for the delay. Figuring it out is probably
possible, but it would take a bit of time. Then libfaim,
the oscar prpl, and the Gaim core and UI all need to be
modified to support disabling the send button.

So basically it's a lot of work for little gain, and that's
why it hasn't been changed yet.

just add the feature, and make a on off switch for it in prefs

takes care of the whole controversy, i personally like gaim because it can
do everything other clients can and still run optimal

A plugin means that you can enable or disable it. gaims msn
plugin is an msn plugin. MS MSN client adds features that
means that all the 3rd party clients should get themselve
compatible.
It'd like to have a wink plugin, because i have enough
telling people that my msn client doesnt support winks.

oh, and this response sounded a lot different then the
"implement X, cause msn7 has it" in the original post. of
course its good to be as compatible as possible, but gaim
should not have features that would fall under the 'lame' or
'bloat' category. it supports plugins just for that purpose.
you can always write a winks plugin yourself?

and no, i dont think people should use msn7 either, but that
winks is just a perfect example of a feature that's only
implemented for those BrEeZaH's who spend half of their day
on msn and want something to fill up the time when it takes
half a minute to get a response from the people they are
talking to. it serves no purpose other then being annoying
and has nothing to do with chatting whatsoever. same story
with that nudge crap. i think MS has gone a totally wrong
way with their IM app.

of course a full-screen animation should not be implemented,
i dont think there's anyone that would doubt that.
i did not know that msn7 bugs you about this though, i
havent had any contacts that tried to send me winks yet. if
it bugs gaim users about this, i think gaim should have a
filter to ignore those messages, maybe even send a message
back, telling the msn7 user to bug off with his winks (in a
friendly manner of course ;))

This is not a matter of being a lame feature or not. It's a thing
that there's now on msn. For keeping full compatibility with it,
we must have anything. Your "Change to windows msn7"
attitude will not help anyone, nor developers or even users
switching from microsoft to open-source solutions.

I think a simple message "Someone send you a lame thing of
msn7" is better than that "blah your msn client is too old for
running this" that appears on msn when someone tries to
send gaim a wink.

This does not mean a full-screen animation must be
implemented anyway.

This bug should be categorized as a win32 bug.
I am not using win32, but I have friends that do and they tell me they
would like to make gaim always open in new window/tab (never reusing an
existing one).
There has been any change of this bug? Is there any change planned?

The file transfer under the msn protocol is very slow.
When the transfer starts it's 2-3 kb/s and after some
time the transfer stops it.

I tried both the transfer from a gaim client to a gaim

I've got an upload bandwith of 1024 kbps, but my MSN

I remember from MSN that it should go faster than this.
Is this a known bug?

I think that this is a problem which also happends in
windows msn 2 windows msn transfers. This is caused by the
system used by MSN to send files: the file is sent to a MSN
server and downloaded by the other peer from it. The msn
server is slow, maybe intentionally to avoid movies or music
being sent across msn. In the past, direct connection was
used instead, which unabled people behind a firewall to use
this function. I think that, maybe, direct sending could be
added for those using Gaim2Gaim if Gaim detects that one of
them is not behind a firewall (he would act as the server
side of the connection).

This is relatively easy to do:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/shellcc/platform/shell/programmersguide/shell_adv/registeringapps.asp

However, I don't see much value and it is something of a
pain - I'm moving this to the Feature Request tracker.

If someone submits a good patch to do this, it'll likely be
accepted.

sufficient to see the red

Hi,
this is not a bug, this is a feature request. But I am
sorry, I couldn't find a function for it on sourceforge.

It happens very often to me, if I write to someone over
icq or msn that the person I am writing to sends me
something very important like access codes or tells me
what I need to do tomorrow). I would be cool if I could
mark this text and then click on a button like "mark as
a note". This texts should be accessable later somehow.

Thanks

Because then I need to search for the text again. Some of my
log files are quite long so it happens that I find more than
1 result if I use the search function. On the other hand I
can't remember everything, can I?

I thought it wouldn't be too expensive to add some kind of
html-tags in the logs to mark the text and that it can be
found easierer later.

Summary: new option: stay joing after closing an irc channel window

Initial Comment:
I would regularly use Gaim as my IRC client if it would
allow me to "join" channels while keeping those pesky
channel windows away, the same way that, say, I am
"joined" with my regular jabber contacts: I do not have
to keep a window open to be reachable by them. Once
they contact me, a window pops up, or optionnally, the
tray icon logo blips.

What I would like would be an option that would allow
me to join IRC channels without having to keep that IRC
channel window open. When activity is detected in the
channel, some proper plugin/monitors could warn me
their usual way.

I guess this could be done by having a special setting
in the IRC channels. When right clicked in the buddy
list, one could have a "channel joined" toggle that
would allow us to join/part channels without having the
window open.

All this because the current system doesn't scale: once
you're in 4 channels, you have to keep 4 window open.
This is unbearable, and not really within the general
spirit of other IRC clients...

Adding comments from #1524806 (Jonathan Kolb - jkolb171):
I am usually logged in to an IRC server, and sit on
several mostly idle channels. It would be nice if I
didn't have to leave a window open all the time just to
recieve several messages a day.

I see that my last comment could be misunderstood, so I'd
like to make it clear:
https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=350235&aid=1190875&group_id=235
It would be useful to have a possibility to be in a
chat without having the window open. Incomming message
would behave like all other IM messages do. If it is
already possible, please excuse me being so lazy to
find out.

This is not likely to be implemented.

I disagree; it is very bearable, and very much in the spirit
of _all_ other IRC clients. You need not have four windows
open in your example, simply put four tabs in the same window.

Summary: Main Window appearance

Initial Comment:
Hey there... I'm having a problem with my "auto-login"
feature, and while typing out the problem, thought I
might come put a suggestion for the main window/loggin
screens... And the feature change might help if this is a
big bug, and not just some fritz on my machine... The
Bug id# is 1071453 if you want to check it out.

Anways, on to the RFE...

In Windows, if you don't have any accounts set to auto-
loggin you get a screen very similar to the loggin screen
of AIM. You know, with the username, password, sign
on button etc... But that screen really really doesn't
make any sense.
I don't know of a single user that uses gaim that ONLY
uses one client... Isn't that the whole point of gaim, is
to be able to be on several clients at once? So, this first
window makes that impossible, and makes you go
through more steps...

So, wouldn't it be easier, nicer to look at and use, if you
had a window similar to the Accounts window? You
know, the one where you can add, modify, delete, or
sign onto your clients there? Seems this would help with
the problem... And you could call the window Main
instead of Accounts... Maybe add a button for Log Into
All... or Disconnect From All, then a loggin button for
each one, instead of the check... or maybe some other
visual way of doing it.

Not saying that the current way is bad, it's not. But it's
just not effective for what it's even there for.
I mean, why not skip that window all together and go
straight to the buddy list

That's my request. Hope it gets put in, but seems that
all the updates lately have really been bug fixes and
small things. Nothing major.
I'm not complaining, I know how hard it is to work on
this stuff, just in your free time, plus deal with all of us
(your users) complaining and such. So, if someone has
time to fiddle with this... even if it's not a developer,
but someone who can program, then maybe you could
offer an example and submit it... Can't screw it up that
bad, could you?

Thanks guys and girls for all your hard work on this
project! Keep it up!

There's already a patch but gaim developers also close not
applied patches, that's why you may have not seen the patch.

I agree on the proposed new menu layout. I traced my
initial problem back to the server, so I'm working with the
jabberd2 people on that, but thanks anyways.

I think this should be high-priority.

If you want to send me gaim's debug output from the start of
the connection to completion of signon, I'll see if I can
help you figure out the TLS thing.

I agree some sort of visual notification would be nice. But
I really can't think of any place to put it, that works well
for multiple accounts. What we really need is for the
jabber options to go something like this:

[x] Use TLS if available
[ ] Require TLS
[ ] Force old-style SSL
[ ] Allow unencrypted plaintext passwords

Hrm. I never get the "(ssl)" part. I may have an issue
with my jabberd v2.0s8 not supporting/using TLS. I'll
contact those folks about that issue.

However, this brings up another point. I think it's
important to have the encryption status more prominently
displayed. I don't want to have to go to the debug window
to see if my chats are encrypted. Maybe something like the
little golden lock icon in the lower-right of Firefox? Thanks.

Connect with debug output enabled. Every send and receive
to and from the jabber server should have "(ssl)" towards
the beginning of the line, i.e.:

(07:47:22) jabber: Sending (ssl):

If you're not seeing those, then SSL/TLS was not negotiated,
and it is in fact an unencrypted stream.

I'm using v1.3.0 on Windows, and everybody here gets a popup
about using plaintext auth over unencrypted streams. If
they allow the connection, it works fine. My jabberd2
server (v2.0.0s8) is requiring TLS connections in the c2s
config, so I'm pretty sure that they're encrypted when they
work. So why do I get the popup? Better yet, how can I
tell, in GAIM, that my connection is encrypted?

Summary: more advanced text replacement? tag?

Initial Comment:
I was thinking it would be useful for a lot of things
to have text replacement that was based on regular
expressions and used the matched expressinos in the
replacement. I happen to talk about math a lot on IM. I
have a cgi script that will generate a picture from a
LaTeX expression, but it would be very nice not to have
to "include a link" every time I wanted to use that.
just put, say, \(\sqrt{2}\) and have it recognize the
\( and \) and pass the \sqrt{2} to the cgi script in
the link. another idea this makes me think of is it
would be nice if gaim proccessed the html tag
correctly and actually showed the image just like it
would in a web page instead of showing nothing. I don't
know how hard that would be, though.

The trouble with displaying tags is, first of all,
it'll only work for those who have installed a plugin, so
you'd have to convince people to switch to gaim and install
the plugin before embedding images. The second issue is that
it is possible to capture people's IP addresses with images.
If you send a tag pointing to your own server, you can go
back through your apache logs and their IP would be right
there. There are also many other issues with images, such as
the possibility of sending obscene images and more. It's
just not worth the slew of security risks.

Hello
I've develop a little plugin for gaim :
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gaim-latex
which can affich LaTeX image in the IM conversation.

The two talker need to have the plugin.
It's only work on UNIX-like system (linux, it's sure, the
other UNIX-like, never try, but I think it's working)

It can help you, I think
(I try to adapt it for windows, but I haven't windows, so
it's a little difficult ;) )

Initial Comment:
In gaim there is 'environment setting' option for proxy
server. It is usefull to change proxy server when you
often change networks (i.e. home, work, etc.) based on
'http_proxy' variable. The problem occurs when you are
moving to a network that doesn't require proxy serwer.
You have to go to setting and change to NO_PROXY
setting. Maybe it would be better for gaim to look for
environment variable describing proxy server and:
- when found use it
- do not use proxy server otherwise.

Initial Comment:
Hi,

This is probably a bit of a miscelaneous request, but a
plugin that provides GAIM with client support for
Ipswitch Messenger would be great. Its become a
popular product with SMEs, because it allows for the
messenging server to be kept in-house and therefore
limits the transmittion of sensitive data to the
outside world. It also has triple-DES encryption, and
a centrally maintained contact list, all of which are
nice for sysadmins.

Unfortunately there's no current way to use it on a
Linux box, so support in some form from GAIM would be
super.

Bye for now!

Jamie.

I do not see us having time to take on yet another protocol
in the near future, reference the slowness in developing the
rendezvous plugin. however, we have reached a state where a
3rd party can maintain a gaim protocol plugin, see
meanwhile.sf.net for an example of such.

I find the buddy pounce function in gaim very attractive.

I'd like to request buddy pounce activate on "message
received" event.
(and play sound to be overridden by pounce)

my purpose : play different sounds depending on who i
received the message from.

i would prefer this rather the pounce on "start typing"
or "stop typing" as i can get several alerts for one
message (as user types intermitently) or false alert
(as user types smth then changes his mind and doesn't
send anything).

Initial Comment:
It would be nice if more event are logged in the system
log. It happens to me many times that something pops up
(someone sends a file, some one requests authorization,
etc.) and I click Ok or whatever (sometimes
accidently!) and I didn't know what happened. There is
no way for me to find out would send me something so I
could ask again. If this information was in the system
log, I could look there to find out what just happened
(or didn't happen).

You can also think about whether all these popups are a
good idea...

Another event that could be better logged, is if someone goes
away.
atm there's something like "Nick is away" in the
Messagewindow logged, but I'd like something like this: "Nick
is away (Reason)"

Summary: Win Gaim should act like a Win app

Initial Comment:
Windows gaim should act like a windows application. I
also think it should act like firefox where windows has
no standard. To that end, I recommend these changes:

---
CTRL-F4 should close a conversation tab, not CTRL-W.

Middle mouse button should close a convo tab.

CTRL-1, CTRL-2, etc. should switch between the 1st,
2nd, etc. tab.

Not everything needs a keyboard shortcut like CTRL-F4,
but every singe menu item should have a letter
underlined so it can be accessed via keyboard. Some
items don't ("Direct IM" and "Edit Buddy Comment," for
example).

When I have a buddy highlighted, and I press the left
arrow, the highlighter should jump to the group name.
I should them be able to press left to collapse the
group, and right to expand it.

View Log should have a keyboard shortcut. If we change
the name of it to "history" (which is a more accurate
term) it could be CTRL-H, since CTRL-L is clear.

If I press ALT-F4 in the conversation window, and I
have more than one conversation open, I should be
warned that there are multiple conversations and I
should asked to confirm whether I truly wish to close
the window, Of course, I should be able to disable
this option.
---

I have more similar suggestions, but before I continue
I want to make sure I'm submitting them in the proper
format. (I've never used soureforge before or worked
on an open source project.) Please let me know. My
screen name is: THE RMONUCL EAAR ON

Ctrl-F4 indeed sounds sensible, since we're not using it for
anything else.
Anyone thinks the warning message box might be pestering users?

Summary: [Layout] Vertically mid-align buttons conversation windows

Initial Comment:
Hi,

it would be nice if, in a conversation window, the
buttons at the bottom of the window ("Warn", "Block",
"Send File" etc.) were vertically aligned to the center
of the row they're on instead of to the bottom of the
row; the current layout does not look good when one of
the buttons has a larger height than the rest.

Attached is a screenshot illustrating this problem.

Thanks! :)

I believe to remember, that it was once possibe to set
users on a ban-list, so they were not able to see my
online-status any more (always appear as offline). I
don't know if this is still possible with the
ICQ-protocol. This was possible with the original
client, about 4 years ago or so...
Anyway, if this is still possible, it would be a great
feature in GAIM!

Yes, this is possible. Just add the users to your privacy
list and they won't be able to see your online status.
Unfortunately, this requires you to click on Tools/Privacy
and add their *UIN* (not Alias) to the list. It works, but
it's not very practical.

Summary: limit scrollback

Initial Comment:
I have nosiest that gaim don't limit the scroll-back
buffer as eg xchat does. This is no problem when you
are on for a short time or online on channels/chat room
with little conversations. But as I that hardly ever
log out and are in channels (IRC) that have not so
little conversation. Then two bad things happens:

1) gaim grow in memory to a point where I have to
restart it because it takes over 100MB (or more) of RAM
or I at least think the memory growth is because of the
scroll-back.

2) When gaim save the scroll-back to a file gaim freeze
and takes 100% CPU. And with a large scroll-back this
take some time. And for some reason gaim freeze and
take 100% CPU even if I don't want to log a large channel.

Suggestion to fix: Limit the scroll-back as in xchat.
Default to something like 1000 lines but see to it that
this figure are configurable. This limit could be
checked and uphold when saving to file. If there are
more then 1000 lines in the scroll-back then remove
(and freed) all lines that are "older" then 1000 lines.

/regards Erik

Summary: Missing smiley description functionality

Initial Comment:
Not sure if this is a feature request or GUI missing
feature:

In MSN messenger, when the mouse passes over a smiley,
a short description pops up, informing the user what
that smiley represents. This functionality is missing
in Gaim.

Proposal:
change the "theme" file format, to allow for a short
note to be included, plus allow for smiley popup to
show those notes.

Idea formats for 'theme" file:
^"Eye Roll" msn_eyeroll.gif 8-)
This way any complex smileys can be listed at the end,
and the older themes can still be understood by the new
code.

Thanks!

I second this feature request, with a small change though. I
would propose that the smiley theme file be XML, similar to
other config files.

Is backward compatibility so important here? If needed, we
can have a small script to convert existing theme file into
XML one.

have the following problem with my msn account and

sometimes, gaim failes to connect to the msn server,
ok, may be the server has problems.
but then i get a message to RETRY or simply CLOSE (the
message window). if i press RETRY it does, and shortly
after, the message pops up again (server problem still
there).
then i press CLOSE, but the message pops up AGAIN AND
AGAIN, even if i don't press retry. this is really
annoying as the message pops up on top of my desktop.

after some time it seems to stop its retries
automaticaly, but it should stop them IMMEDIATLY after

*nods* that's how the auto reconnect plugin works. if you
manage to hit cancel on the progress dialog, that should
interupt it's functioning, but hitting "close" on the
failure dialog will not.

it backs off exponentially from 8 seconds to 2048 seconds
(just happens to work out to 34 minutes) across successive
failures.

Summary: send/receive buddy list.

Initial Comment:
Consider this: most people who use GAIM do so in order
to gather all their contacts together in one place.
Now, most people have contact networks, so they end up
sharing a bunch of contacts. But it remains awkward to
share contact lists, and awkward to maintain these
lists over time.

A missing feature of IM is the ability to share a
group, purely for the sake of contact management.
Group sharing would require an owner and a globally
unique name. The group owner would decide on who is in
the group and respond to add/remove requests. This
would be hugely beneficial for IM lists within
companies, and among friend networks.

The group could show up in the GUI the same way a
regular group does. At any time a group should be
shareable/manageable.

For infrastructure you have a couple of options:

1) you might be looking at a central server to hold
group memberships. It would give GAIM a big push if
the project had the resources to put up a central group
server, otherwise yahoo, aol and others would have to
handle it, and have access to those lists. Doing this
before they get involved would help keep that info private.

2) a p2p alternative would be to have the groups cached
by the clients; when the client sees the group owner
sign in, it could request group replication.

hope this idea is worth pursuing,

Bruce

deryni9, I agree it would be better to implement this in one
of the original clients or in jabber. Seems like it's just
a matter of time before it happens, the jabber jep "group
services" you mention is basically the same idea. I'll keep
an eye on that one

gaim isn't exactly in a position to implement this across
protocols because gaim isn't an IM service, it's only an IM
client, and as such it doesn't have servers of it's own.
However, there is a jabber enhancement proposal
(http://www.jabber.org/jeps/jep-0144.html) which is geared
to supporting some form/method of this, so if you wanted to
implement support in gaim for that JEP I'm rather certain
that would be acceptable.

Initial Comment:
It would be nice to be able to set a default directory
to save conversations to, instead of having to
browse each time.

It would also be nice to be able to select a default
format for the conversation file name, such as
username + date and time.

Although the automatic log feature is fun, and in
some ways better than saving a conversation, there
are two reasons why it can't replace saving
conversations for me.

First, I don't want to log every single chat.

Second, I want to be able to save my chats by topic.
With logging they're restricted by person.

If this is existing functionality that I've overlooked,
my apologies.

This is available in gnome 2.8 on the linux desktop. I
don't know how it's implemented, but it's possible that it's
implemented in gtk now (probably not to windows port yet
tho). So it's possible this could be added very soon.

Summary: IRC MOTD window font and size improvements

Initial Comment:
Under Win 2000 SP 4 at least (gaim 1.3.0 and GTK+ 2.6.7
A), IRC MOTD windows are showing a sans-serif
proportional typeface. Given that IRC is predominantly
a monospace environment, using a proportional face for
the MOTD display upsets any formatting in the MOTD that
relies on monospace type for its arrangement. I suggest
gaim switch to using monospace type for the MOTD window.

The MOTD window is also a bit on the small side, the
lines of text already wrap as they are now (in
proportional type). How badly this happens depends on
the server; SlashNET Coruscant server's MOTD only has
one line that wraps, but Freenode's Tolkien server's
text wraps like crazy. Using a monospace font would of
course worsen this as the letters are mostly wider for
a given point size.

Both server's ASCII art graphics get mangled by the font.

GTK+ permitting, the best approach IMO would be to size
the window according to the longest line of text in the
MOTD (screen width permitting), and then you'd
guarantee to always get it right. That failing, a boost
to the window size should help instead :)

Summary: Keep buddy lists syncronized

Initial Comment:
Back before GAIM moved to using xml for storing buddy
lists, I could keep all of my accounts that used the
same protocol in sync merely by symlinking each
accounts buddy list file to my master list. I would
very much apreciate there being some way to only keep
one buddy list per protocol instead of per account.

Viewing log files only provides a date for the start of
the conversation.

Some way to differentiate between days in multiple day
logfiles would be useful.

The patch at #1004632 may solve your problem. It adds the
date (along with the time) in every line of log.

I'm filling this as bug since I couldn't find anything
similar.

It doesn't work because it hasn't been implemented and
therefore it is an RFE. No need to post it there, this post
can be moved by an admin.

Since it doesn't work as it should, I would consider it a
bug, but if the team considers it a 'feature' then I will
also post it there.

Initial Comment:
Hi.
I think that an option to show when an user of the MSN
protocol opens to the windows, should be nice.
The program AMSN opens a window, and show "user" has
opened the windows.
I think gaim can do this in a similar way.

I'd like it if the option was given to make the tab bar

Summary: paste image = send image file

Initial Comment:
If it's not too much effort, I would like to see this
little piece of functionality implemented: When the
clipboard contains an image and the user chooses to
paste in a conversation window, the image is written to
a temporary file and it's sent to his interlocutor.
This would speed up some activities like sending
screenshots or exchanging graphics from a text document.

I guess it wouldn't be difficult at all, as gaim
already has the ability to manipulate images (e.g.
buddy icons) and is able to send files.
