Hi Phil,

Isn't 1,000 gigabytes the same as 1 terrabyte and the same as one trillion
bytes?

So how long do you think that it would take to read the entire three terrabytes
of the library of congress?

The News Groups robot that a friend set me up with has sure snarfed me many
many gigabytes of possible sound files for games etc. It really wouldn't
surprise me if I did fill up a terrabyte eventually.

BFN and Happy New Year.

[Audyssey] Help with Roguelike games

2006-12-31 Thread Zachary Kline
Howdy,
I'm wondering if there are still any blind players out in the Internet land
that still play these games? They were featured quite prominantly in the early
issues of Audyssey, as were classics like Fallthru.
I've begun trying to play a game of Nethack, and have encountered a few
problems--possibly because it's for Windows console mode, and Window-Eyes has a
great deal of trouble with that sometimes.
The main problem I have is somewhat difficult to describe. But I'll try to do
it below:
Eessentially, blank spaces aren't being represented in the view of the
screen I get with the mouse. While the vast majority of any Nethack screen is
symbols, it is still not all a regular grid shape and thus hard to figure out
sometimes. Areas which are especially difficult include determining when I've
run into a wall versus hit a corridor, and determining which direction
corridors lead.
A somewhat related problem is that when I move the mouse cursor down a line at
a time, this doesn't stick in the same collumn, and thus telling exactly where
things are is extremely difficult, because I have to go across the screen and
try to count. Ugh.
Michael? Anybody more experienced than I? Care to shed some possible light on
how to deal with this?
Thanks,
Zack.

Re: [Audyssey] A quick STFC 2.0 question.

2006-12-31 Thread Mark Pemberton
Hi Tom, I mentioned the enemy starbasis and wondered if you could capture
them. Lets say, once the shields were put out of action in a battle, you
could send an away team over and use them as federation outposts. Using the
letter A in the tactical menu for "Away Team". Any damage would be
inherited until the repair time elapsed of course.
That does make me wonder what would happen if Earth station McKinley was
about to be captured...would Itself destruct or would I be forced to fire
on my own base?

Re: [Audyssey] A quick STFC 2.0 question.

2006-12-31 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Mark,
That would certainly be an interesting concept for version 2.0. To be
honest I don't think capturing a starbase is that practical in the long
run. There are hundres even thousands of support personelle abord those
bases. To successfully take a station you would have to force enemy to
abandon the base and would intale all of there support craft was
destroyed, they had no weapons, and you offer a surrender or die polacy.
The Romulans have proven they'd rather self-destruct than surrender. The
Klingons would never surrender, and choose death. The Cardassians though
would likely surrender as they did DS9 on DS9.

Oh, yeah. Sounds great, but we ain't exactly neighbors.Grin.
Would be little expensive going for a cross country trip to get a six
pack of beer and maybe a pizza don't you think?
Oh well, tomorrow is Monday, after the Sunday licker ban, and I'll get
my celibration chow then.
Big smile.

Hi Richard,
You braught up a very good point. During the holidays several members
have unsubscribed over the last two or three weeks. We expect them to
return sometime in January or so.
That is typical for lists as large as ours. Many people go before the
holidays and begin returning after the first of the year.
