I'm working on a very detailed RPG right now. Check out www.blind-games.comor
forum.blind-games.com if you're interested in testing. I share Tom's
interest in making more mainstream genres for blind gamers. I hope to have a
version of my game ready this year.

rpg but being that they can be so intensive I am not sure if I will ever see
that come to pass. But I appreciate all the work you put in and can't wait
to play the games you create. *smile*

  Hi,
Yeah, and the wait between accessible game releases isn't the only reason
blind gamers are looking at mainstream games. For me personally I tend to
find the majority of audio games produced for the blind do not hold my
personal interest. We have plenty of card games, board games, Space Invader
type clones, but nothing really like the games you can get for the XBox or
Playstation these days. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with card
games, board games, etc but it seams to be the main focus of audio game
 developers.
The main reason I have been working on a full 3D game engine for the
blind, fairly similar to mainstream FPS engines, is that I would like to see
more accessible games made like Halo, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Jedi
Knight, Gear Wars, etc. Those games really hold my interest, and I will sit
for hours trying to play the mainstream versions, and if there was an
accessible game made like that I'd certainly be spilling my pockets to get
it. However, at this point in time I find myself the only blind accessible
game developer creating a game engine that can make games on the par with
 the mainstream games.

 Orin wrote:

Most people are at least trying mainstream games, or attempting to. Wanna
know why? Think about this. When in audio games did we have the last big
rlease? Rail Racer which, as of now was released a year ago. Heck, I don't
even know what the last big release was. Been so long.

  Hello all!
I got the Mortal Combat 4, and I have a few questions for you who know,
and I am sure there are a lot of those:
I have the text file with moves of the characters and asigned keys, but
I don't understand the key combinations quite well. For instance, there is
written lp - low punch, so does it mean pressing l and p togeather or
pressing them separately, or what means when it is written b-b?
And, if someone can, please, tell me how to set the game. I worked out
that the letters s, a, q and w are for selecting the options, but I am
still not sure about that.
I hope that you will answer my questions, whishing you all happy gaming,
whatever you played! :)

Thank you in advance, and best regards!

Subject: [Audyssey] Klango Software Catalog - would you like to submit
yoursoftware?

Hi,

I'm the one of the people who are responsible for the Klango Player, a
new accessible multimedia and community center. We would like to
invite all developers to submit their software to a new Software Catalog
we will be launching in a few days.

Some time ago we tried to create a few audio games and other small
programs for the listening people, but after a year we already knew
that reachability of the VI audience is the main problem of such activity.
Because we didn't want to give up, we stopped making games and started
designing a new software platform which could be used as an efficient
medium for delivering (acessible) software and other interactive
multimedia content to broader, worldwide VI audience. It took us almost
two years to finish the first stage of the adventure.

We are happy to announce that the final version of the Klango Player 2.0
will be released on 6th October.

With a single download, and thanks to Player's simple user interface,
even non-experienced blind users (not only geeks like you;) get easy
access to the Player's functions and some additional Klango Programs
(through a built-in install/update mechanism). Now, we are finishing the
puzzle by adding the Software Catalog dedicated to all developers
interested in publishing their software to the community.

If it comes to the community, it grows everyday with new users from all
over the world ...without any advertisement from our side. Even now,
when the Player is online just for two months (as a beta), we have over
1000 users and each day hundreds of people log into Klango and have a
good time with it (take a look at the forums). New language versions are
being developped by users themselves ...and so on.

So... getting back to the point of this email: if you're a developer and
the Klango Community matches somehow your target audience, simply submit
your software to the Catalog. :) It's a simple operation and you can be
sure you'll gain a lot of new users for your applications. If you submit
your app, it will be listed in the Player's menu and users will be able
to download, install and run it directly from the Player with just a few
keypresses.

Of course, submitting aplications to the Software Catalogue is
completely free.

More detailed information about the Software Catalog and details of the
submition process can be found in our Partner Panel,
http://partner.klango.net.
You have to own a Klango Account to enter the Panel, but we hope it's
not a big problem for you :) Simply download the Player and create one.
We suggest you to get the For Testers version, because it's almost
up-to-date if it comes to various features. It's URL is
http://setuptest.klango.net. You can also read more about the player at
http://en.klango.net/readme/.

Please note that the possibility of downloading your applications is not
available in the current versions of the Player. If we recieve your
submission(s) to the catalog (through the panel), we'll release a
final-beta version next week to test how the machinery works in real
conditions before we enter full 2.0.

In a case of any questions, don't hesitate to contact us. Please use our
support form at http://support.klango.net, it's the best way of
contacting us.

Best regards,
 Maciej Muszytowski

Hi Lindsay,
I guess it really depends on what you view as accessible, and how much
work you are willing to put into practicing the game to make it playable
by you.
For example the fighting games like Mortal Kombat are all fairly
accessible once you memorize the menus, and have another blind or
sighted gamer walk you through it a couple of times.
The WWE wrestling games like WWE Smackdown vs Raw are accessible once
you learn the different moves, sounds, and memorize a few things.
Brandon Coal has a podcast around somewhere on WWE Smackdown VS Raw, and
it is a great introduction into the wrestling games for the PS2 and PSP.
The Tomb Raider series of games I really like aren't accessible as such,
but can be played with some sighted asistance. I have however discovered
some tips and tricks that helps me get around in the games. For example,
as long as I keep Lara Croft in walk mode I won't fall off of ledges,
buildings, etc. I can walk her right up to an edge, she will stop, and
then I can use the reverse safety drop command to safely turn her around
and have her drop to the ground below. It took me lots and lots of
practice. As far as jumping over stuff I try to time the jump by
counting the time I have Lara in the air. Still some guess work
involved, but I can usually do it if I am consistent about counting the
time. I wouldn't recommend something as complex as TR for your first PS2
game.
Like I said if you really want something somewhat easy to learn and play
try a fighting game like Mortal Kombat or similar as a start. Those you
can get the hang of fairly quickly. As for other games I suggest renting
them and trying them out before you actually buy it to see if it is
somewhat playable or not.

[Audyssey] an accessible board game

2008-09-27 Thread Michael Feir
Hello everyone. I believe I've stumbled across something very interesting here.
It's an unofficial free version of a popular fantasy adventure board game
called Talisman. There's no single player mode so you'd need to have two or
more people present at the same computer to derrive the full benefit from this.
I've just begun to try this out playing two characters myself and the results
have been good so far. I found the link at the bottom of a Wikipedia article on
the original board game. It's a zip file and you have to download directly from
the link as the site itself says it's under construction. Use the save target
as command if you can in order to save the zip file rather than open it. The
game doesn't install anything. You just extract the files into their own folder
and run talisman.exe. There's also a file talisman rulebook.exe which provides
a basic manual for the game. I find this easier to use once you go into the
view menu and get rid of the tree view. The game is quite simple to play and
you use the cursor keys or numbers to select your options. When you are
selecting a space to move to on the board, the cursor keys navigate you around.
Hit the space bar or enter key and you will be told what location you've
selected and asked whether you're certain you want to go there. It's a bit
clumsy and slower but it works. The game doesn't rely on you hiding anything
from your opponents so there are no worries on that score.

I've had best results when I've had my Jaws set to echo all. You could also use
the review cursor. When you run talisman.exe, you have to hit the space bar or
enter key at least once before the first readable screen appears. I presume
there are graphics first.

While a single player option would have been nifty, I look forward to trying
this game out with family and friends. Even playing one or more characters on
one's own and seeing whether any of them can make it to the centre and claim
the crown of command can be entertaining. I'd be interested to hear about how
others do with this game particularly if you can get one or more other people
to play with you. The link to this game is:

Re: [Audyssey] Mainstream games was sl accessibility contact details

2008-09-27 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Kellie,
Thanks. Hopefully I can begin releasing 3D games sometime early next
year. So far porting my Genesis 3D FPS engine to Java is going quite
well all things considered. I have a lot of the basic player commands
programmed into the engine such as walking, running, sidestepping,
jumping, climbing, etc. I think the next step will be porting the 3D
level editor over to Java so I can build some test levels to test out
the engine and test actually moving around in a full 3D environment. I
am pretty psyched about the whole thing because when Genesis 3D is ready
to create 3D games it will be the first taiste of accessible mainstream
style games most on this list have ever experienced. A true 3D
environment adds a completely new dinamic to playing games as enemies
can be above, below, left, right, ahead, or behind you, and you also
have to look up and if the enemy is above or below your line of sight
you have to look up or down to shoot at it as well as line it up. So It
is going to be a lot trickier to master than a point and shoot game. It
will take some practice for most gamers I think. Especially, since a
player's pov, (point of view,) is often ignored in accessible games, but
it is quite common in the mainstream market in FPS games.
I suppose some concepts like point of view are ignored, because many of
the blind accessible game developers probably don't fully understand it
not having had sight before. While it is pretty much a totally sighted
concept it still can be done in audio quite well by using 3D audio as
well as targeting beeps to indicate if the triangulation is correct and
the enemy is precisely lined up for a shot. I plan to add some look
ahead command which will tell you exactly what is in front of you such
as doors, walls, enemys, special items, etc so that you can get an idea
of what is directly in your character's line of sight.
So all in all I guess we will get to find out together what it is like
to play something similar to mainstream games only made in a totally
audio format. I expect there will be lots of testing involved before it
is all ready to go. Smile.

to see a rpg but being that they can be so intensive I am not sure if I
will ever see that come to pass. But I appreciate all the work you put
in and can't wait to play the games you create. *smile*

Re: [Audyssey] Mainstream games was sl accessibility contact details

2008-09-27 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Darren,
For me it is an issue of how challenging the game is, and being able to
try several different things. Many of the current accessible games don't
provide a lot of serious challenges for me. I don't consider myself
super inteligent, but I do think the A.I. systems in a lot of accessible
games falls short of putting up a serious challenge for me.
For example, I initially wrote STFC, because I found GMA's Trek 2000 way
too simple to play. Yeah, I know others have told me the game was super
hard, it is a difficult game, so I baught it and beat it on all five
difficulty levels in a month. Most of the time when I play on the
highest difficulty I walk away from the game with 3 ships and two bases,
and there have been a number of times I didn't lose any ships and
stations on difficulty 5. That means it is just too easy if I can walk
away from the game with everything in tact, and totally whiped out all
the enemies.
Besides better A.I. in mainstream games I find there is a lot more
strategical opertunities that just aren't available in audio games. In a
mainstream game you might be able to take up a snipers position behind
packing crates, pillars, from catwalks, bridges, whatever. If you are
firing down at a bunch of enemies from high up it instantly gives you
better strategical attacks. If you are hiding behind a crate and fire at
an enemy over the top and duck down behind it you have a shield of sort
to block incoming fire while you can blast the enemies out in the open.
I like being able to pick my battles and do the logical thing like
sniper my enemies from various vantage points when it is available.

Darren Harris wrote:

Yup this is the trouble. There's very few games out there that I'd
definitely go out and buy, because of that reason.

Hi lisa.

just in case the linke on audiogames.net isn't working, you can find
mudsplat on
http://inova.snv.jussieu.fr/timgames/www.timgames.org/mudsplat/index.php?PHPSESSID=73ea3a1b4178a9a317c6f2389282b020

Have fun with it, though personally I found it much too easy, a
shame sinse the sounds and music are very nice.

I know it's supposed to be a game for kids, but stil, i think the
difficulty could've been cranked up a bit, or that the game could've
have a difficulty setting.

Hi Jennifer,

2008-09-27 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Shaun,
Sure. That is true. However, even with copyrights there are ways of
stepping around them. Even though I can't technically write a game named
Tomb Raider or Indiana Jones that doesn't mean I can't write a game
along the same lines with different characters, sound effects, etc. As
long as it is different enough from the original copyrighted work a
person can get away with it.
Take a game like Resident Evil 1. Well, from what I seen other than a
few main characters the majority of the game is public domain stuff.
Zombies are public domain, a city mall, a clown with a chainsaw, a
butcher with a big knife, a Homeland Security agent, etc really isn't
all that unique to get full copyright status. Names, places, etc might
have to be changed, but big deal. something like Resident Evil could be
made with enough small changes here and there to qualify as a new work.
Most of the time copyrights are a pain, but not impossible to deal with.
The only cases where they are real trouble is with big mainstream
copyrighted works such as Star Wars where you can't just put a generic
spin on it. Stuff like Jedis, light sabers, Sith, and the supporting
characters are so important to the plot that you can't remove them and
make it work.

Hello everyone. I believe I've stumbled across something very interesting
here. It's an unofficial free version of a popular fantasy adventure board
game called Talisman. There's no single player mode so you'd need to have
two or more people present at the same computer to derrive the full
benefit from this. I've just begun to try this out playing two characters
myself and the results have been good so far. I found the link at the
bottom of a Wikipedia article on the original board game. It's a zip file
and you have to download directly from the link as the site itself says
it's under construction. Use the save target as command if you can in
order to save the zip file rather than open it. The game doesn't install
anything. You just extract the files into their own folder and run
talisman.exe. There's also a file talisman rulebook.exe which provides a
basic manual for the game. I find this easier to use once you go into the
view menu and get rid of the tree view. The game is quite simple to play
and you use the cursor keys or numbers to select your options. When you
are selecting a space to move to on the board, the cursor keys navigate
you around. Hit the space bar or enter key and you will be told what
location you've selected and asked whether you're certain you want to go
there. It's a bit clumsy and slower but it works. The game doesn't rely on
you hiding anything from your opponents so there are no worries on that
score.

I've had best results when I've had my Jaws set to echo all. You could
also use the review cursor. When you run talisman.exe, you have to hit the
space bar or enter key at least once before the first readable screen
appears. I presume there are graphics first.

While a single player option would have been nifty, I look forward to
trying this game out with family and friends. Even playing one or more
characters on one's own and seeing whether any of them can make it to the
centre and claim the crown of command can be entertaining. I'd be
interested to hear about how others do with this game particularly if you
can get one or more other people to play with you. The link to this game

Hi michael.

Ooopse! missed that link, i'm an idiot!

unfortunately, looking at the way the game works, the pbem rules wouldn't
fit, sinse obviously there would be no way of ensuring that the dice and
cards on both copies of the game worked the same way.

mildly annoying, but there you go. i'd guess as well looking at the game it
was a port of the original bbc-b computer version of the board game,
probably produced a lng time ago in the 80s. i'm actually surprised
thereisn't a more uptodate computerized version around.

Heya Tyler and all.

Agreed, I have found gamefaqs to be invaluable when it comes to trying
to learn these mainstream games. Many of the guides have listings of
all moves/combos for the game you are looking at and the button presses
needed to invoke them. Extremely good stuff.

Happy gaming.

   Hello all!
I got the Mortal Combat 4, and I have a few questions for you who
 know,
and I am sure there are a lot of those:
I have the text file with moves of the characters and asigned keys,
but
I don't understand the key combinations quite well. For instance,
there is
written lp - low punch, so does it mean pressing l and p togeather
or
pressing them separately, or what means when it is written b-b?
And, if someone can, please, tell me how to set the game. I worked
out
that the letters s, a, q and w are for selecting the options, but I am

 still not sure about that.

Yeah, Gamefaqs is a pretty good site. I've got my own page there. Just stay
away from their message boards. Or if you do decide to visit them, don't
ever mention the fact that you're blind. I made that mistake about six years
ago. Let's just say the response overall wasn't welcoming. I actually had
one guy threaten to mark me for trolling. Needless to say, while I do use
their guides expensively, particularly those of certain authors, I rarely go
on the message boards anymore. Not only are they infested with idiots, the
moderators seem to have no clue as to their job. They'll moderate someone
for no reason at all and then someone who does violate the written TOS more
often than not gets off scott free.

Hi, that is how the story mode works in Tekken Dark Resurrection as
well. Unfortunately like Thomas I will not be getting a ps3 anytime

here seem to have had good luck with it.

Game on.

Here's some interesting news on the mk DC game. From what I've heard and

some speculation as well, the MK story mode will be totally accessible.
you'll basically pick a character to start it off with, then you just
fight
different characters and the stoy mode will progress with cutscenes etc.

pretty neat if you ask me.

apart from the cost I have hardly any space for extra stuf.

At some point i will be replacing a couple modules of this and that but I don't
see myself expanding anything major.

[Audyssey] Duels MMORPG web based game: I like responces like this: Fwd: Unable to create a character

2008-09-27 Thread Orin

Hi all,

I just emailed the support team about this game which seems detailed
in questing, especially when you reach hire levels. And creating a
character isn't accessible due to flashed. One email later, it's being
worked on. Now that's great. Wish games like Magic Duel and Cthoule
Nation would do that.

Subject: Re: Unable to create a character

Hi Orin,

It sounds like this issue may be the result of the fact that the
character creator uses Adobe Flash, instead of HTML. We are looking
into this now, to see what we can do about getting you into the game
as quickly as possible, so that you can enjoy the quest and PVP
action. Thanks for your patience. Hopefully we can get this fixed
up for you quickly.

Hello,

I came to this game via google, and was looking at the wiki. It
seems great and the quests actually seem detailed. I'm not sure if
they go by a plot, but the comics I can't read either.

I'm blind, and using a screen reader. It just so happens that
everything is accessible and okay but the character creation system.
I go to create an avatar, and it just says A new dualist is born!
Now you'll tell us what it looks like or something, but I see
absolutely no options on how to name it, and configure it's
appearance. I asume it's not like other browser games where it is
text? I like the whole anamation of matches with sounds and stuff
and then I can just click the narration. However I'm just trying to
get a character created. Would there be a way for you to motify
this, like making it text only with combo boxes and such and a form?

Thank you.
