[Audyssey] Check out the zone

2009-02-16 Thread Ken
My friend came over today and told my mom he could get her a Wii for 50 bucks,
so she went. If you have been hearing about this kind of deal, prepare for the
bait and switch...
Because it's not a true Wii. It's not a bad little game system for $50, but if
you buy it, you may not get what you're expecting unless you read on.
The game is call the zone: wireless gaming. We found it at dollar general in
Waikman. My mom wanted a Wii, and that's why she bought it.
It's about half the size of the Wii, has two remotes that look nothing like
Wiimotes--a bit more like nunchucks actually, with no trigger but rather finger
grips on the bottom and four buttons besides the arrow keys on top.
My mother also went expecting that it could play Wii games. Well, it cannot.
If you've played a lot of Wii games and found none accessible except Wii
Sports--or just don't like any of the others, this might be for you.
It has seven games built-in, so you get what you get and that's all. It has a
baseball game which is ridiculously easy, (I hit about fifty home runs in a row
while my friend got out after out,) tennis which is a bit easier to play on the
Wii, boxing, (but you hit the select key to block instead of holding the
remotes by your face,) soccer, ping-pong or table tennis, and bowling. Sorry,
no golf.
I won't say that I'm much impressed with the system, but if you'd like to find
out what it's like to play the Wii without spending a lot of money, this may be
for you. The tennis game is pretty fun, but not as challenging as the one on
the Wii. Though you hit buttons to block in the boxing game, there's no chord
between remote and nunchuck because you use both wireless remotes. I haven't
tried soccer or table tennis yet, but my mom says the bowling game is not very
good.
My conclusions, then, are that if you want a game system like the Wii without
spending the cash, get the Zone--but just remember that you get what you paid
for. It's not a bad system--especially if you have kids and want them playing
in their rooms more. Oh by the way, I forgot to mention the worst drawback of
this system--as far as I know, the games are single player own.ly--at least
boxing is because you use both remotes at once.
I have mixed thoughts on this system, so if you have the fifty bucks and can
find one, you might at least check the Zone out. I'd probably be very
impressed with it had I not played a Wii first.

Sorry for the double post, but also, if you decide to add me as a partner,
let me know either on here or off list, there's no actual in game

Oh, and to anyone who decides to play, feel free to add me as a sparring
partner. Every 50 spars you get a massive stamina bonus, so the more
sparring partners we have, the quicker we'll get that bonus. If enough
people get into this, and once one of us gets to season 2, we might be
able to start our own village. All depends on who decides to play and
whatnot.

First of all, let me just say this game is very, odd.Its a spoof of
several anime, most notably naturo, with some bleach, death note and a
couple others thrown in
for good measure. You can gather teams of allies, get items both
perminant and consumable, fight other ninja, join a village which is like
a clan, go on missions
and quests, and many other things. It's kind of a mindless addiction,
since a lot of it is random number rolls, but there's actually a
surprising amount to do, with
all the unlockable content, different types of missions, different ninja
ranks to gain, trophies to earn, etc. I recommend giving this game a try,
it doesn't take
very long per day to expend all your stamina, and there's absolutely no
death or failure penalty, in fact you still earn experience and the like
for failing missions,
you just earn more and have a chance of finding an item or unlocking an
ally if you succeed depending on the mission.

Even if you're not the type who usually uses referal links, I recommend
doing so here, as you'll get a referal bonus of 100 starting stamina,
which is quite a fair
chunk. Hope you enjoy this find, and my thanks to anyone who tries it out

Re: [Audyssey] Calling all game designers

2009-02-16 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi,
Well, if you wanted a version like the original Oregon Trail that should
be pretty easy to come up with. If you want a more modern remake of it
with sounds, chat, etc like the newer version that would take a lot
longer to produce.
Anyway, it was my understanding someone else was already working on this
title? If so I'd leave it up to said person to complete it rather than
come up with my own version.

Smile.

The Kolesar Brothers wrote:

This would be a great on line role playing game. It also would be a cool
game with sound effects for all of the actions that accure within the game

I remembered playing this old apple game from high school
So there's my challenge to the game designers from this list.

Re: [Audyssey] Intro and random linux tips

2009-02-16 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi James,

Quote
linux (soundrts is the only linux-native game I've tried), be sure to
disable or uninstall PulseAudio if you have it. SDL and other sound
mixing apps use ALSA, and there is a noticable amount of lag when
using pulse with these apps (SoundRTS played a sound from 1-3 seconds
after a keypress on my 1.6 ghz netbook).
End quote

Yes, during our research we encountered this issue first hand. At the
time we weren't aware of what was causing the lag, and that may explain
some of the problems we are experiencing with our Linux products. As you
might or might not be aware in addition to the Windows releases of
Mysteries of the Ancients and USA Raceway we have some cross platform
games under development as well. As a result sometime in late 2009 or
early 2010 games for the Linux platform should begin showing up on our
products page.

Quote
Speaking of linux gaming,
wine is definitely not out of the question - I've managed to run
superdeekout, some lworks free games (betas of super egg hunt and toy
robbery) almost entirely successfully after registering dlls (lworks
games drop out some sounds like chicken clucking or flapping or your
footsteps but they're still playable). I have had more trouble before
wine 1.0 was released late last summer, but now more programs run than
ever.
End quote

Well, we looked at wine for Mac OS X and Linux and discovered it works
but isn't a practical solution. As you pointed out sounds can often drop
out, keyboard/joystick input doesn't respond correctly, or other things
can go wrong with a game under wine. We managed to get Shades of Doom to
play under wine 1.0, but it didn't play exactly perfect. As a result
from a development and tech support standpoint we decided to go native
Linux rather than depend on wine for our games. Though, for playing
games like Jim Kitchen's games Wine works quite well.

Quote
I've shifted
completely away from windows (haven't used it since the beginning of
the year), and darwine on the mac works a little less well than it's
linux equivalent. Despite that, Super Deekout runs perfectly on both.
End quote

Glad to see there is another Linux fan on list here. I also spend most
of my time in Linux if i can help it. That is part of my interest in
making Linux and Mac ports of my games.

If you want a no non-sense
Windows game emulator i'd say Cedega is a good start. In my experience
some games run better with Cedega than Wine, but I've seen where some
games work better with wine than Cedega. Neither solution is perfect and
running Windows only games on Linux is tricky at best. However, i am
glad to know some games like Super Deecout run equally well on Mac and
Linux via emulation.

Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] VIPMud scripting and roundtime for the beginner

2009-02-16 Thread Orin
Hmm. This mud's still around? I played it back when it was just
starting, and loved it. Went back again and it was gone. So of course
I'll have to start playing again. For those that don't want to pay for
simutronics games, this game is similar to them, as far as shops and
combat go. I think UL's even got a "dir" command like simutronics does
for finding things in the city.

 Hi,
Hard to help without knowing what mud client you are using friend.
Although the basics are usually the same general ideas, different mud
clients go about it different ways.
Let me know and I may be able to point you in the right direction.

Subject: [Audyssey] VIP scripting and roundtime for the beginner

Hi there:

I am currently playing a mud called Unwritten Legends (I will
gladly pimp
this mud in another thread), and I would like to make some scripts
and

macros that would help me with things such as foraging, combat,
preparation
for magic spells, etc.

I will admit that I have very very rudimentary knowledge in all
things
scripting, so if someone might be willing to help me with a few
queries

and
frustrations so that I cna get on the right track, I would greatly
appreciate it.

Firstly, there is roundtime associated with various skills. So if I
thrust
my dagger at an opponent, a message that says 'roundtime: 3
seconds' will
come up. I have three seconds until I can perform another in-game
action.

When I have finishd killing an opponent, I'd like to be able to
skin the

corpse, put the skin in my pack, and search the corpse. There is,
however,
a roundtime associated for those things as well. Roundtime is a
great
thing, but with my very limited trigger-making skillls, I am
uncertain of

how to begin making triggers that I can use without the next command
getting
tripped up by left over round time.

There are other questions that I have, and I'd like to delve in to
making
some sound triggers for this game. Not too many, just a few that
might be

beneficial.

I'd appreciate any assistance that you could provide.

Happy gaming.

Jal
