Actual, I would like to make out another point before we get this out.
"Earth to Name" is softened used when one is zoning out and their
attention is elsewhere, and are not responding to something. I should
know, for i have read books with that expression. Only, in this case, I
am not sure why Thomas used it, and I will look upon this to find out.

Yes an extremely early beta exists but it crashes somewhere during
the first and only level.
sl2 does not exist as liam has a job now and hasn't got enough time

Re: [Audyssey] RSGames Client

2011-03-29 Thread Ryan Smith
Hi Damien,
I don't really use MSN much anymore, and if you emailed my personal
email/RS Games Support I didn't get either of them. Admin chats are
mainly for people to provide feedback to use in real-time, if we
aren't online at the the time they are sent, we don't usually read
them which is why emailing RS Games Support is usually your best
option.

1) About your Monopoly bug, this indeed is an issue we are looking into.
2) About the invalid choice issue when downloading sounds, it will be
fixed in our next release to the client.
3) Fixing the boards is definitely on our to-do list.

All of your issues are server-side problems that need to, and will be fixed.
Thanks!

Two things. 1. It could edit sounds as well as far as I'm aware of. 2. When

You do not need a studio actually. You could use a program called logic.
Well it runs on a mac, but you get the idea. You need equipment like mitty
keyboards, a mixing desk and an eyemac. I'm not saying that you should
follow this, you could make what ever decisions you want, but logic is a
good pro tool in general. I don't use a mac, but I go to this music club
every once a weak. -

Hi Damien,

Cant' say I blame you in the least. The only way you can pull off any
kind of project like that is first to setup a repository such as
subversion where the developers can check in and out various
revisions, and there is clear communication between all parties of who
is doing what to the project and when. Then, you might want bug
tracking software like bug buddy so bug reports can be filed somewhere
where everyone will be notified at once. Running a development team
and studio takes extremely good manigement skills and the right
software. Obviously, I was trained to use Linux based based solutions
so I have a dedicated Linux machine with subversion and various other
source management tools installed to keep track of what is happening
with MOTA, STFC, Raceway, etc.

As far as deciding who can contribute code the open source community
have a pretty good method for figuring out who has access rights or
not. For one thing if they check the source code out, produce a decent
patch, upgrade, etc and prove themselves to be a competent developer
they can apply to the source maintainers for membership. Since you
might be thinking more comercial you'd have to base membership on
someones past contributions, game projects, and his/her
trustworthiness. If they can't produce any examples of their coding
skill then chances are they might only hinder your attempts to produce
anything. If you don't think they are trustworthy don't add them to
your team. Above all if you do form a team let all members know right
off what the standards are, and that all coding standards, formatting,
etc are to be followed as set forth in your company polacies.

Cheers!

Hi Damien,

Well, that works for me. When it comes to somebody just starting to
learn to program its good not to throw too much at them at once.
Although, something like SDL is light years easier than DirectX from a
newby point of view just learning C or C++ is bad enough without
learning the sound, input, and windows APIs too. One thing i like
about BGT it is close enough to C/C++ to give you an idea of what it
is like, but takes all the hard work out of it.

For example, the issue of pointers. Even with something as easy as SDL
with C++ you can't avoid using pointers for sounds, music, etc. You
have to be careful to load them properly, and dispose of them properly
or memory leak/crash city here we come. Newbies don't need to worry
about that just yet.

Cheers!

Hi Damien,

Well, unfortunately that's all too true. As many people are apped to
point out there are far too many of that kind of game on the market
already. However, to answer your question directly the storyline and
Christmassy sound effects is the only difference. That in of itself
isn't worth rewriting it in my opinion.

However, I've often felt that you or someone like myself should take a
number of these abandon games, rewrite them as open source projects,
and use them as tools to train new developers how to create games.
Something like Giftenum isn't the worlds greatest game, that's all too
true, but nicely rewritten and used to train developers how to write
free or comercial software makes it more valuable as an example rather
than a game. You see what I mean?

For instance, I thought about taking a game like Tarzan Junior,
wrewriting it in C++, using SDL, and create a simple cross-platform
game that is open source. TJ isn't exactly everyone's favorite game,
its abandonware, but as a free open source project it could give
people an idea how to design a simple side-scroller without
reinventing the wheel so to speak. If we stop thinking of the
marketability of a project and more about its educational value then
something like Giftenum doesn't sound that bad in that light, because
Giftenum is a quick and simple example of a game that can be hammered
out in under a week.

Cheers!

say
those beepings were different alien ships coming to land on you or
aircrafts

coming to attack your base, etc.
I mean, if you think it is different and will do well with the audiogames
arena then I will happily redo it, but from the impression I got a couple
months back when this sort of game was discussed it wasn't everybody's
favourite.
I wonder exactly how many people enjoy playing Giftanum as opposed to
Troopanum, Dark Destroyer, Judgment Day in the "shoot before it lands"

of games, and Bobby's Revenge, The Great Toy Robbery, Christmas Whoopass
and

Kringle Crash in the Christmas themed games?

Hi Shaun,

I'm not quite sure what you mean by DirectX 9 has come "to end of life
now." The current version of DirectX is still 9.0C. However,
individual components have been upgraded such as Direct3D is now
v11.0, DirectInput latest is 8.1, XAudio2 has replaced DirectSound,
etc but it is still all core DirectX 9 for C++ developers. For .Net
developers XNA Framework is a wrapper for DirectX 9.0C.. So DirectX 9
is definitely not dead, but is continuing to get updated quarterly.
What people call DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 is simply DirectX 9.0C with
Direct3D 10 or Direct3D 11. That's the only difference between 9.0C
and newer DirectX versions that ship with Vista and Windows 7.

Subject: [Audyssey] RSGames Client

Hey guys,
I sent this email a few days ago and got no response. I didn't
even get a copy of it myself and I have been having problems with
my mailbox, so I'm not even sure if it came through on your end.
I am having a couple problems with the RSGames Client when
accessing some property related menus in Monopoly.
The problem mainly occurs when I can't afford a property and it
asks me to manage my assets to pay off the owed money. When I
mortgage my properties it says invalid choice and the menus start
nesting each other. I have tried doing an admin chat and have also
attempted to contact Ryan via both email and MSN and have received no response.
Sometimes the menus will say invalid choice even when I am
manually going into the management menus.
Also a couple of minor bugs in that the client is saying invalid
choice after sounds have downloaded, and also the British monopoly
board sometimes switches between pounds and dollars.
I redownloaded the client about a week ago just to make sure I
wasn't missing any updates, and it was still happening. Bearing in
mind this has now been going on since the end of last year.
Is there a fix for this or is it being worked on? Is it a server
or a client issue?

Thanks.
Regards,
Damien.

Hi,
I know because:
1. I kept hearing ypu swinging your sword, and as you did it I heard the amo
sound.
2. There is no way you can get hit by three motocycles on that level,
withoutdrinking any potions, and still be avlive.
3. Younever ran out of amo; you would have if you hadn't used that cheat.

I think we are talking about several things here.
tdl games is no more, their games are no more.
lti is gone but who knows they may restart.
Its a well known fact that bavisoft has not responded to user

eventhough blatently created threads to get a responce were created.
If someone talks about cracking their games they put a message to
stop that but for all we know that may be an automatic responder.

Any efforts to contact them have failed.

Hi Hayden,

No, but they stop working after everybody and their uncle gets a
chance to download before you do. Try downloading something off a
heavily used list when it is a Dropbox link. I can assure you if you
don't start the download as soon as you see it in a few hours the link
will give you the oh so lovely, "download has exceeded maximum
bandwidth limit" message and you have to wait until his/her account
resets before grabbing the file. Dropbox is a serious pain in the butt
when trying to share something with two or three hundred people at a
time, because when talking about hundreds of downloads Dropbox won't
allow you to do it, and it will only allow so many downloads daily. I
forget what it is maybe 25 per day, but the thing is it is
rediculously low for a heavily used mailing list were downloads can
add up to the hundreds quickly. Dropbox was only designed to share
files and things with a few family and friends, and was never intended
for mass redistribution of stuff as all too many try to do.

Cheers!

the trouble with all the dotnet stuff is that if you check all the
boxes windows update will load it all for you, directx needs to be

The only saving grace for it now is that
dx9 has come to end of life now.
At 03:52 a.m. 28/03/2011, you wrote:

Hi Dark,

Well, as a gamer I completely understand your point of view on this,
but as a developer I see the other side of the issue too. For one
thing as a professionally trained programmer I like my work to reflect
my skills, education, etc so my personal standards for quality is
fairly high. Nothing drives me crazier than an incomplete or fairly
buggy piece of software that I personally created.

For example, copyright issues aside with Montezuma's Revenge I was
going to have to eventually rewrite that program, or at least a large
part of it, to fix a couple of technical issues I made early on in
game development. One of them was the jump bug were you could jump
through walls, or jump and get stuck in mid air for no reason at all.
Obviously, these problems were fixed when I wrote the G3D engine which
MOTA uses, but I wasn't quite sure how to fix it at the time I was
working on Monte. The other problem was that I used James North's
coordinate system with (0, 0) at the top-left corner of the map and
(50, 50) at the bottom-right corner of the map. This would have been
ok accept when I wrote my trig calculations for the game my
orientation was backwards which means the game mechanics operated
incorrectly. The problem could have been fixed fairly easily, but
Utopia put an end to development before I had a chance to actually
rewrite/correct the game mechanics.so even if I had been allowed to
complete the game at some point I was going to have to correct those
bugs.

With STFC as I think you might remember I lost the source code to the
game during a system crash. As a result I was either forced to release
the game as is, I.E. release the last beta as 1.0, or rewrite it from
scratch. I chose a short-term solution which was to take the last beta
from the website, changed a few voice files to say 1.0, and released
it as is. Sure it is a good game, but there were bugs I never could
correct without the source code which I need to fix it. So as a
developer it was a little frustrating to get a support e-mail
reporting bugs I already knew about, and knowing I couldn't possibly
fix them without a complete rewrite. Plus at the time STFC and Monte
was being developed people were always having troubles installing .Net
and Managed DirectX which got to be a hastle because at the time XP
shipped with neither technology, and they had to be installed in the
exact correct order in the exact right way or STFC wouldn't run.
Although, newerWindows releases like Windows 7 have gone a long way to
resolving most problems with .Net applications its still an issue for
older XP systems. Plus I've had a few e-mails to the effect people
don't want to install .Net on their computer for one reason or
another.

The other issue was a lot of gamers felt at the time I could fix the
.Net compatibility issues simply by creating a streamline install of
all the dependencies which would simplify installing the game. They
were right I could have fixed the problems with .Net and Managed
DirectX by packing them with my installer, but instead of 25 MB the
install size would have jumped to well over 500 MB. This dependency
issue is primarily one reason I began moving away from .Net and
decided to look at C, C++, Java or something else. I didn't think it
was fare to the gamer to install a game with 500 MB of dependencies
attached. Not to mention It was going to cost me more in download
bandwidth, storage space, etc. Let's face it .Net based apps are
bloated beyond belief when you need several third-party managed
libraries that may or may not be preinstalled on your system.

To sum up the issue I don't think game developers such as Josh and
myself necessarily want to take down games that are old because they
lack maret, but do it because the game in question no longer operates
correctly or as expected on the current hardware or OS as intended.
Answering tech support e-mails or repeatedly answering people's
question why this or that game no longer works takes time and energy
away from the current game or upgrade in development. Especially,
since the devlopers usually are the ones the support questions go to
meaning we double aas developer and on the spot e-mail tech support
person.

For example, let's assume that someone writes USA Games support
wondering why STFC 1.2 isn't working. I can talk them through
correctly installing .Net, upgrading .Net if necessary, and getting
Managed DirectX installed. That might take a couple of long winded
e-mails, but eventually we will resolve the issue. Unfortunately, for
me I could have spent that time on STFC 2.0 which will be far better
than 1.x. Its written in C++, uses cross-platform libraries like SDL
and FMOD, and the install size shouldn't be any mor

Re: [Audyssey] X-Sight Games - Re: RSGames Client

2011-03-29 Thread Thomas Ward

Cheers!

I'm afraid that's probably true damine.

We actually have so many space invaders games it's got it's own genre
catagorization on the database with I think 17 or so entries which is
betwene five and ten percent of the available games.

That's actually a bit much I think.

Re: [Audyssey] Laughing hard core: was light battles

2011-03-29 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Bryan,

Oh, man! I'm sorry to hear that. You haven't been maried all that
long. All I can say is I hope things work out alright in the end.

However, in principle I agree with you. A company who sells comercial
games such as Bavisoft can do at the very least send out bymonthly
progress reports of of how they are doing, weather or not game x is
progressing, etc instead of remaining silent. If they decided to
cancel the project keeping us informed of their decision to cancel the
project will at least let their customers know it won't be coming out,
and they'll stop waiting for it to come out. Doing nothing, saying
nothing, etc only increases speculation of what they are doing and
most of that will become negative before long. So that when and if
they ever do produce a new product their reputation will not be a very
good one. To be honest given Bavisoft's current reputation I doubt I'd
ever buy another product from them even if it came out tomorrow.

In my opinion too much bad press about unanswered support questions,
problems with shipping orders, etc all mounts to poor quality service
and support. Not to mention they have been informed of Windows 7
compatibility issues with their current releases and nothing. They
don't even support or update what they got so buying Grizzly Gulch and
Chillingham is throwing your money down a hole if you plan to move
beyond Windows XP. I personally refuse to pay for a product that isn't
going to be supported by the company who produces it.

Cheers!

cool. i hope the choice for nvda can be included in games that ask for a screen
reader such as self destruct. I don't even think system access was an option
when that game was first written anyway.

2011-03-29 Thread Damien Pendleton

Hi Brandon,
I still plan to do a full rewrite of most of the abandoned games such as
Savage Gamut, Self Destruct and Danger City. I'm not too sure about
Giftanum, since it is only really a Troopanum clone with a different
storyline.
However, as always, if there is enough demand then I shall also rewrite that
one.

Regards,
Damien.

Hi Shane,
I regret to inform you that the Chopper Challenge game is no longer
supported. When we had a few coders over at X-Sight, the code wasn't
being synchronised and managed in a controlled manner, causing bugs to
crop up here and there where we thought they had previously been fixed.
As a result, the coding for Chopper Challenge was more or less
completed by one guy with very little input from me. Now he has left I
am left with a very buggy source code which I find I can't fix because
it is very messy and not commented. Even the segments of code which
were mine I was very shocked upon reading it and trying to wade my way
through it. This was a project back from the mid 2000's, and I thought
it was a bit past its time.
If there is popular demand for it then I may consider rewriting it.
However, for now, consider Chopper Challenge abandonware.
I think now is a good time to say that, unfortunately, Acefire will end
up the same way, for the same reasons. For the sort of games I am
working on currently, Acefire now seems like a very basic project,
almost a beginner's work. A few concepts here and there that made it
look advanced, but again, the code is very messy and I have had several
bugs reported to me that I cannot find their source.
I am currently working on a title which should hopefully keep you on
the edge of your seats clinging on for dear life, that's all I'll say
for now. Watch out for trailers and other snippets as the game becomes
more formed. Also I am working on updating River Raiders, so if you
have any suggestions, now's the time to book them through. Grin.

If anyone has any questions, you all know where to find me.
Lastly, for anyone who doesn't yet know. I've set up a discussion forum
at X-Sight where you can discuss things. I'll be posting updates and
content on there and I'll be taking my blog down soon. It is much
easier to interact with a community base through a forum than a blog,
in my opinion.

Regards,
Damien.

Hey guys,
I sent this email a few days ago and got no response. I didn't even
get a copy of it myself and I have been having problems with my
mailbox, so I'm not even sure if it came through on your end.
I am having a couple problems with the RSGames Client when accessing
some property related menus in Monopoly.
The problem mainly occurs when I can't afford a property and it asks
me to manage my assets to pay off the owed money. When I mortgage my
properties it says invalid choice and the menus start nesting each
other. I have tried doing an admin chat and have also attempted to
contact Ryan via both email and MSN and have received no response.
Sometimes the menus will say invalid choice even when I am manually
going into the management menus.
Also a couple of minor bugs in that the client is saying invalid
choice after sounds have downloaded, and also the British monopoly
board sometimes switches between pounds and dollars.
I redownloaded the client about a week ago just to make sure I wasn't
missing any updates, and it was still happening. Bearing in mind this
has now been going on since the end of last year.
Is there a fix for this or is it being worked on? Is it a server or a
client issue?

Thanks.
Regards,
Damien.

Ahem...Now, that we got that childish glee out of the way you are

Enter into my computer, and your drive for example c:\ or d:\, then enter
your documents and settings folder found in your c or d drive, enter your
username such as Admin, and you'll see a zgp folder. Enter and you'll find
monopoly. This is an explenation for xp. I don't know vista or win7.

Hello Shane, three suggestions. One: in the installation dialogs, when you
install the game, could you add an option to install the game in a
different

folder? That would be helpful as I am running windows 7 and I have all my
games on c:\users\user name\games\company\the name of the game
User name being mine, games is the folder, the company of the game, and
the
game name. Second, when you play the game, could you create a .exe file
that

will let us play the game without having to download the BGT program? And
third, when you are in the game, could you put warming sounds before you
fall into pits? For example in Super liam when you were about to fall into
a
hazerd you would get two warming sounds. Thanks for developing the game,
it

is awesome so far!

Hi Shane,
I regret to inform you that the Chopper Challenge game is no longer
supported. When we had a few coders over at X-Sight, the code wasn't
being synchronised and managed in a controlled manner, causing bugs to
crop up here and there where we thought they had previously been fixed.
As a result, the coding for Chopper Challenge was more or less completed
by one guy with very little input from me. Now he has left I am left with
a very buggy source code which I find I can't fix because it is very
messy and not commented. Even the segments of code which were mine I was
very shocked upon reading it and trying to wade my way through it. This
was a project back from the mid 2000's, and I thought it was a bit past
its time.
If there is popular demand for it then I may consider rewriting it.
However, for now, consider Chopper Challenge abandonware.
I think now is a good time to say that, unfortunately, Acefire will end
up the same way, for the same reasons. For the sort of games I am working
on currently, Acefire now seems like a very basic project, almost a
beginner's work. A few concepts here and there that made it look
advanced, but again, the code is very messy and I have had several bugs
reported to me that I cannot find their source.
I am currently working on a title which should hopefully keep you on the
edge of your seats clinging on for dear life, that's all I'll say for
now. Watch out for trailers and other snippets as the game becomes more
formed. Also I am working on updating River Raiders, so if you have any
suggestions, now's the time to book them through. Grin.

If anyone has any questions, you all know where to find me.
Lastly, for anyone who doesn't yet know. I've set up a discussion forum
at X-Sight where you can discuss things. I'll be posting updates and
content on there and I'll be taking my blog down soon. It is much easier
to interact with a community base through a forum than a blog, in my
opinion.

Regards,
Damien.

Hey guys,
I sent this email a few days ago and got no response. I didn't even get
a copy of it myself and I have been having problems with my mailbox, so
I'm not even sure if it came through on your end.
I am having a couple problems with the RSGames Client when accessing
some property related menus in Monopoly.
The problem mainly occurs when I can't afford a property and it asks me
to manage my assets to pay off the owed money. When I mortgage my
properties it says invalid choice and the menus start nesting each
other. I have tried doing an admin chat and have also attempted to
contact Ryan via both email and MSN and have received no response.
Sometimes the menus will say invalid choice even when I am manually
going into the management menus.
Also a couple of minor bugs in that the client is saying invalid choice
after sounds have downloaded, and also the British monopoly board
sometimes switches between pounds and dollars.
I redownloaded the client about a week ago just to make sure I wasn't
missing any updates, and it was still happening. Bearing in mind this
has now been going on since the end of last year.
Is there a fix for this or is it being worked on? Is it a server or a
client issue?

Thanks.
Regards,
Damien.

Re: [Audyssey] new psx game uploaded and v 1.0 of emulatorstomorrow!

2011-03-29 Thread dark

Hi Nicol.

You don't actually need any of the hardware at all. an emulator is just a
program on your pc which emulates the behaviour of a games console or old
computer. With it you run rom files which are like games and programs for
that console or computer.

Think of it like this, you can have a program like winamp or windows media
player on your computer which can play music in the absense of a cd player.

you don't physically need a cd, just the appropriate files in a format which
the music player can read such as mp3.

that's basically how emulators work.

On the joystick issue, if you have a pc joystick, most emulators I believe
have configuration files for them, but certainly you'd need a pc joystick
plugged into your usb or similar, an original snes, playstation or whatever
controller wouldn't do you much good.

Legality wise, well it's one of these grey areas as Tom said.

officially you need to legally own the console and games cartrage to have
the right to run an emulator with a rom, unofficially, lots of people do it
anyway.

I will freely confess in the past I have run roms of some of my favourite
coin operated arcade games such as the simpsons and ninja turtles beat em
ups, and I certainly don't own several arcade cabinets.

Sinse however there were never any console versions released of these games
and sinse I don't know anywhere that actually stil has the machines
available to play (actually, arcade machines seem something of a thing of
the past now), I don't really feel too much compunction about running the
emulator in this case.

On the other hand, I personally find most emulators to be a litle buggy, and
in the case of a machine like an amigar, quite a pest to run and I prefer to
play the game on a console if at all possible.

I have! in perfect legality run the Turrican games with an amigar emulator
(sinse I did own all three of them and an amigar at one time), however this
was such a pain to do I pretty much stopped, pluss the freeware pc turrican
remake T2002 is easily as good as the original anyway.

That's why if I want to play marrio brothers (as in fact I have been quite
recently), I simply stick a copy of marrio all stars into my Snes.

Re: [Audyssey] new psx game uploaded and v 1.0 of emulatorstomorrow!

2011-03-29 Thread NIcol
Hi Dark
Thanks for explaining this.
Please bare with me, I am still confused about what emulators do.
Do I have to buy the game console in order to emulate its games on my pc?
Or do I only have to buy the cartridge containing the games?
If so, how do I put the console cartridge into my pc?
Is the emulator idea cheeper than buying the console?
I want to do this legally from the start, but I am in the dark as to what
emulators do.
Can I connect a joystick to my pc if I have a console emulator?
And lastly, can I emulate games legally such as Mario brothers and sircus
Charlie?
I can always ask my sighted friends to assist me in playing mainstream
games.
Many thanks for any info.

emulatorstomorrow!

Hi Nicol.

An emulator is a program designed to pretend to be another piece of hardware

running on your pc.

If you wanted for instance, you could run a comador 64 computer emulator and

use it's word processer function.

However, obviously the thing people most want to do with emulators is
emulate games consoles or computer systems of the past and run games.

Thus, when running correctly, an emulator gets you precisely the same as
you'd get if you physically had a nes, snes, ps1 or whatever.

They thus don't specifically help with access, sinse unfortunately it's not
possible to read the graphically emulated text with your pc screen reader
(if it was that would be awsome, but sadly no).

So, emulators are basically just another way of playing mainstream games,
and one which, as Tom says is of dubious legality.

I personally haven't run that many emulators, simply because I prefer to
play games on original consoles and sinse I have a perfectly working Snes
gamecube and Mega drive there really is no need for me to.

beware the grue!

Dark.
