Re: [Audyssey] Response from Jellyvision regarding You don't KnowJack
I've never played the You Don't Know Jack series because part of the games cannot be played by a blind gamer, but when they make the necessary changes, I will, because they sound fun. While it sounds like newer games of the series might be playable by the blind, I wonder if older ones will be modified? Exactly. I used to have hours of fun on the Playstation version. Admittedly You DOn't Know Jack Mock 2 wasn't quite as funny because as far as I'm concerned the polite feminen computer and the laid back host just didn't cut the cracker. Turns out it'd be an issue for everyone. This is his response. I have to tell you, your email has started quite a lengthy discussion here at the office. Unfortunately I'm not sure there's much we can do to address this in the current version. I really wish I would have heard from you about 8 months ago. The current version contains 3 types of questions: 1. The traditional multiple choice. 2. The DisOrDat 3. The Jack Attack. There are no question types that require keyboard / virtual keyboard entry. There are some variant specialty questions that are based on the multiple choice but they are executed in the same manner as the normal multiple choice. Given what you've explained below, all of the game, with the exception of the Jack Attack, should be fully accessible. I don't know if you know this, but a good number of us fans of the old games are blind. I miss the game, and have pre-ordered the game for my PS3 and will be playing it on Tuesday. I notice that Cookie continues to read the questions, this is great. However, I'm concerned; will there be question types like Roadkill? In the ride, that was inaccessible. That doesn't annoy me more than the Jack Attack though. The reason that this is the most frustrating is that with the new multiplayer features, we won't really be able to compete. And the people who I'm playing against certainly won't read the Jack Attack words as they come up, they'll just take advantage and win. I'm just curious if there could possibly be anything you can do to improve the jack attack experience for blind players? Because so much of the game is accessible and playable for us already, that's the thing. It's just that online blind people can probably only compete against blind people and even then, we have to be really good at the questions as we can't answer the jack attacks. If I do crappy on the questions and get some right on the attack that's what the whole point of the attack is, to get bonus cash. Also, I'm curious, are there questions where you have to type in answers this time? I would think on consoles and a virtual keyboard that'd be hard. Thanks for reading this email if you do at least. I hope that maybe you can figure out a way to make the attacks accessible and put it in a downloadable patch. My first guess would be to have Cookie somehow read them, but I guess the whole point is to see them in buzz in quickly. Re: [Audyssey] X-Sight Games - Re: RSGames Client
Hi, Actually, there is no big mystery as to why I used that expression. Damien and I were talking about game development studios, and what software one would need for tracking source code, bugs, etc on a team project. Muhammed chimes in with a suggestion for a sound editing ssoftware for Mac which has absolutely nothing to do with tracking bugs or managing source code on a large project. Further more he was talking about a recording studio when we were clearly using the term as in a software studio not a music studio. He was obviously not paying attention to the real topic at hand. Hope that helps clarify things. Cheers! --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. A great update, and, as far as the health of the family, I'm sure glad to hear that things are getting back to whatever normal?? is. This has been, so far, not a good start to the new year for us at USA Games Interactive. My family and I have undergone several health issues that have slowed and in large part prevented us from making steady progress on our active titles such as Mysteries of the Ancients and USA Raceway. Although, we were planning on a quick release for MOTA beta 18 health issues simply got in the way, and everything had to be put on hold until we had recovered from the various illnesses that struck the family. It all began in mid to late February when my wife, Ester, discovered a rash on her forehead. After she went to see the doctor we discovered she had a bacterial infection called Impetigo which is highly contagious. The doctor gave her various antibiotics to get rid of the infection, but unfortunately between the infection and antibiotics she was sick for several days. She slept most of the time, and most of the household chores like cooking, cleaning, etcc fell to me while she rested. Then, if things couldn't get any worse my son, Sean, came down with a stomach flu in March. I'll spare you all the gory details, but suddenly we had two ill people in the house, and one really able bodied person up and about. So that became something of a serious challenge for me. Finally, in late March I myself came down sick with the flu and spent several days in bed sleeping, throwing up, or just reading books waiting for my body to recover. Fortunately, my wife was pretty much over her infection so she was able to tend to me giving me bowls of soup, medicine, etc while I weathered the flu. As I write this I'm far better than I was, but I still feel a bit drained and week from the events of the past week. So in the end do to health related issues we literally lost about a month in development time as one or more family members fell ill, and all of our active projects were put on hold. All the same some work was completed, and it is to these changes, updates, etc I'd like to report. Many of These things were added before the family became sick, and some I managed to work on in my free time throughout the month of March as I found time to do them. So fortunately it wasn't a complete loss. So here is to the good news. New Default Voice Over the past few months of game development I discovered it was extremely time consuming to record, edit, and produce prerecorded wav files for several different game titles at once. We had Accapela Heather for Mysteries of the Ancients, Real Speak Tom for USA Raceway, AT&T Crystal for Final Conflict, etc. It is something of a hassle to record hundreds, perhaps thousands, of speech clips for each and every game especially when in a lot of the cases the messages such as numbers, directions, standard menus, etc are the exact same thing but using a different Sapi voice. So I decided what we really needed to do is decide on a default voice that we would use for every single game. That is to create a large library of voice clips and samples we could literally copy into a new USA Games project and have all the basic work done such as numbers, default menus, standard status messages, etc. All that would need to be added is specialized speech clips for new weapons, characters, extra status messages, whatever which would greatly speed up the development process as well as save me a lot of unnecessary work. So I began looking at all the Sapi voices I own to find out which one sounded the most professional, which one was the most clear, and seamed to have the best pronunciation dictionary. Accapela Heather, although she has a nice voice, really has difficulty with pronunciation. The AT&T voices like Crystal, Mike, etc also sound good but have difficulty with words that often come up in sci-fi and fantasy books. The Neospeech voices while they also sounded good often tended to spell words they couldn't pronounce which made coming up with a correct pronunciation difficulty. In the end the only voices that seamed to meet most of my requirements were the Real Speak voices that ship with Freedom Scientific products such as Jaws and Openbook. In my personal opinion Real Speak Tom, seamed to fit all of the requirements, as his voice always reminded me of an American news caster or sports commentator. So beginning with Mysteries of the Ancients beta 18, USA Raceway beta 1, and sTFC 2.0 beta 1 all of our projects will ship with Real Speak Tom b

Re: [Audyssey] X-Sight Games - Re: RSGames Client
yeah I understand man. Well if you decide to get beta testing up again I am avalible. Hi Shaun, The idea of being a team within X-Sight basically fizzled out. Those application forms and policy documents were obviously just a feeble attempt on my part to bring some form of order into the world of a rather uncontrollable environment. It was generally hard to pass content around, especially source code revisions, and since the host moves and college days I just haven't had time to set up private mailing lists and monitor the progress of things. However, as it was nobody was active on the team back in the day anyway. As is, I have much more free time now, and with the recent introduction of Dropbox things have gotten slightly easier. However there is only really you who have expressed an interest to continue, and from what I can remember you were not really familiar with my programming. I'll have to consider for some time as to whether I will restart with a team environment, since it isn't easy to determine who is going to do what and when, or even if, they will have the work done. As you know most of the people in the team were not producing anything and therefore what was the point in being there, just to say they are in a software development team? I will also have to think about the privacy and security of my products, since I don't want a repeat performance where privileged material is being leaked out on the internet. If I am going to start having multiple people involved with the development and testing of my products, it will be a select few who have helped and supported me over the years to get to where I am now or who I know I can trust. I'm not sure who leaked my betas out and I couldn't really do anything much if I did, and it's twice that it has happened and therefore I hope you'll understand why I am put off and am now putting up my guard, as it were. As a result, the coding for Chopper Challenge was more or less completed by one guy with very little input from me. Now he has left I am left with a very buggy source code which I find I can't fix because it is very messy and not commented. Even the segments of code which were mine I was very shocked upon reading it and trying to wade my way through it. This was a project back from the mid 2000's, and I thought it was a bit past its time. If there is popular demand for it then I may consider rewriting it. However, for now, consider Chopper Challenge abandonware. I think now is a good time to say that, unfortunately, Acefire will end up the same way, for the same reasons. For the sort of games I am working on currently, Acefire now seems like a very basic project, almost a beginner's work. A few concepts here and there that made it look advanced, but again, the code is very messy and I have had several bugs reported to me that I cannot find their source. I am currently working on a title which should hopefully keep you on the edge of your seats clinging on for dear life, that's all I'll say for now. Watch out for trailers and other snippets as the game becomes more formed. Also I am working on updating River Raiders, so if you have any suggestions, now's the time to book them through. Grin. If anyone has any questions, you all know where to find me. Lastly, for anyone who doesn't yet know. I've set up a discussion forum at X-Sight where you can discuss things. I'll be posting updates and content on there and I'll be taking my blog down soon. It is much easier to interact with a community base through a forum than a blog, in my opinion. Re: [Audyssey] old games was, shell shock
every time I check to get the redist, etc the last version was for 2010 at june some times. Hi Shaun, I'm not quite sure what you mean by DirectX 9 has come "to end of life now." The current version of DirectX is still 9.0C. However, individual components have been upgraded such as Direct3D is now v11.0, DirectInput latest is 8.1, XAudio2 has replaced DirectSound, etc but it is still all core DirectX 9 for C++ developers. For .Net developers XNA Framework is a wrapper for DirectX 9.0C.. So DirectX 9 is definitely not dead, but is continuing to get updated quarterly. What people call DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 is simply DirectX 9.0C with Direct3D 10 or Direct3D 11. That's the only difference between 9.0C and newer DirectX versions that ship with Vista and Windows 7. Re: [Audyssey] supershock question
Hello Michael, Honestly don't you read the messages that get posted to the list? First off the game is called Super Shot, S u p e r S h o t, not Supershock. The other is yesterday Liam announced that because the game is abandonware he is not going to support it in any way, shape, or form right now. He can not sell you a product key, he can not generate a product key, and you have to play the demo as is because he lost the source code for it. Cheers! [Audyssey] Response from Jellyvision regarding You don't Know Jack
Hey all, A while ago I had emailed the You don't Know Jack Jellyvision product manager I believe he is, Mike Bilder, about the possibility of the Jack Attack being made accessible. Mainly I emailed him to tell him that yes, we do play and since the game wasn't out yet I had asked if there was keyboard entry questions, as that would be an accessibility issue on consoles. Turns out it'd be an issue for everyone. This is his response. I like it, and usually when someone mentions to You don't know Jack on Twitter that they're a blind player they start following us immediately after they see it, so I think they're interested, to say the least. [Audyssey] USA Games News 3/31/2011
USA Games News March 31, 2011 Introduction Hello, and welcome to another edition of the USA Games news letter. So beginning with Mysteries of the Ancients beta 18, USA Raceway beta 1, and sTFC 2.0 beta 1 all of our projects will ship with Real Speak Tom by default for all games and platforms. While this may or may not be your favorite voice I think that this voice will give us the semi-professional feel we are looking for. Plus by building a large library of speech clips using Real Speak Tom's voice it will shave days perhaps weeks off of game development time in the future as we will have one single library of voice clips to draw from. We won't have to continue reinventing the wheel over and over again

Hi all, Now that super shot is off my list of abandoned games that I have to find, we now need to worry about egg hunt and pigeon panic from l-works. Does anyone have those games? When there are no rockets falling, press alt and it will bring up the menu bar, which will also stop the game. I don't think this was meant to be the real pause feature, but it can be used as one.
