2012-09-19 Thread dark

Hi Ryan.

This does indeed sound good, particularly for me, sinse I've always had a
lot of fun with side scrollers from a low vision perspective, and my
favourite have always been those like the mega man and metroid series that
are closer to rpg's, though others such as zelda 2 and the later
castlevania games have unfortunately not been playable due to text
complexities, especially as far as stats and random items go.

So, I'm very happy to here that your creating something like this in audio,
particularly sinse it sounds like your actually including more side scroller
mechanics of the sort I've wanted to see in audio.

As regards ultiplayer, I fully understand the need from a server point of
view to build the multiplayer first, however I'm glad there will still be a
single player option in the game over all.

I'll be very interested to see where this one goes and what mechanics you
can introduce into the game.

all the best,

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] What the sparcle?

2012-09-19 Thread Michael Feir
This is precisely why we haven't been discussing it much. I'm actually
working on an updated manual which will give more of a substantive
guide to everyone. A whole lot has to be changed and adapted. It'll
probably take a couple of months at least to do proper justice to the
new manual.

The original game was my attempt to adapt an idea for a sort of
stacked sidescroller I had into board game. You play it in a word
processor so there never was a physical Sparkle board. In essence,
we're still working out what the computerised sidescroller will
ultimately be like and don't have more solid answers to give. I'll
have to make major changes to the magic system among other things so
that it better suits being programmed. For now though, the old manual
is one's best option for getting a feel for what Sparkle is all about
since that's all there has actually ever been. All of us are working
on this project in our spare time and development is subject to that.
It'll be a long haul as each of us has other interests and
commitments. I was quite surprised at the continued interest in the
idea that a few people seemed to have. The game was disasterously
clunky to play in a word processor and would have been a bit of a
chore even with a physical board and pieces. As a computer game,
however, it should turn out to be a fun fast-paced game. It's a matter
of correctly using sound and speech information to give enough of an
overall perspective while still allowing one to concentrate on the
immediate situation and surroundings. No easy task, but possible I
think.

 Hi Dark et al,
Sparkle is a pretty deep game and unfortunately nothing I can truly do
 full
justice to in a few paragraphs. Still, I'll try.
Basically, there will be a complex of 6 stacked levels, each of which
contains a variety of obstacles such as walls to jump or climb over, pits
full of gems, helpful or harmful buildings with which the player can
interact, and a full cast of fantasy characters from goblins to dragons.
 The
player's goal will be to race through the complex collecting trophies and
trying to deposit them at the top of the complex before the goblins do.
Doing so earns points and positive events for the players, while failing
 to
do so causes negative events to occur.
I should point out, as well, that this game will be a true side-scroller
with vertical movement, gravity, etc. Jumping, for example, is not a
true/false variable, but is rather an analogue command that takes
 advantage
of the second dimension. There are few things more fun right now than
leaping off the top of a wall to the bottom of a pit to see just how long

 it
takes. Less fun is climbing all the way back out of that pit.
Michael and I have discussed the possibility of adding in stats before,
 and
it's something I'm interested in, but right now, I'm still laying down
 the
basic functionality. The player can navigate basic levels, collect items,
and use them, but that's about it. As Shaun said, I'm working on network
support right now, as I don't want to end up accidentally designing the
 game
for single player and then having to

Hi Dark,
There are a lot of games--though none in the AG community--that have done a
better job of incorporating RPG and side scroller than I plan to. While I
plan to have stats at some point, I hadn't planned on a fully-fledged
experience system and the like. As I said, though, that's further down on
the list of things to do, however it pans out.
I completely agree with you about having a single-player option, and I plan
to have that in the game. However, the mechanics of single player versus
multi-player overlap quite a lot, and it will be easier for me to design the
full system and just make single player a component of that.
For example, you could make a single player walk very easily. If the player
presses right arrow, make him walk to the right. This is just fine in a
single player game because it doesn't send data to the server. For a
multiplayer game, though, you would want something a bit different. In that
instance, you would create a false player for each of the other people
playing the game, and have those false players act on a more perfunctory set
of commands. Instead of saying player 2 took a step, player 2 took another
step, player 2 took a third step, you would say player 2 started moving, and
when he stopped, send a command that said player 2 stopped moving.
If I build the player so that he acts like he's a multiplayer from the
beginning, I won't have to rebuild him when I actually get to the
multiplayer portion of the game. All of that will be done already. It's much
easier to convert from multiplayer to single player than it is to go from
single player to multiplayer.
With regard to attack mechanics, I don't want to give too much away, but
suffice it to say that there will be actual attacks that you can block,
duck, jump over, etc. I want enemies to have a lot more personality than
they thus far have in audio games. Think about the robots in MegaMan X that
threw their shield at you, then reeled it back in with a chain. In audio,
you might represent that with a traveling whoosh, followed by the sound of
the shield scraping back toward them across the ground. Though that
particular example will likely not be in the game, there will be things with
that and greater levels of complexity.
The original game calls for sword strokes, arrows, and various magic spells.
The sword itself has a number of attacks at its disposal, and I intend to
update those for the side scrolling genre. Other than that, I don't know
yet.
I'm not sure what you're asking about in terms of architecture. Aside from
run, jump, climb, fall, fight, what are you wondering?
Thanks for the offer of voice acting. I may take you up on that when I
switch from placeholder to the real thing.
Best,
Ryan

Hi Austin,

At this time the only version of Microsoft Flight Simulator that will
run on Windows 7 and Windows 8 is FS 10. If you are willing to fit the
bill for the cost I'd recommend Flight Simulator 10 Gold. Then you'll
need fsuipc and Its Your Plane to make it reasonably accessible.

Re: [Audyssey] Where can I get the game Eamon?

2012-09-19 Thread dark

Hi Kieth.

I haven't updated the db entry because the new version of eamon deluxe is in
testing, particularly it's new vi compatbility mode which fixes a lot of the
problems with menues and such the old version has, as well has having lots
of new eamon adventures and more converted classic ones. The bad news is
that in vi compatibility mode, it won't run on post xp windows unless you
use a virtual machine, (the none vi compatible version uses dosbox, but that
unfortunately won't work with screen readers).
There have been a few preliminary releases of stand alone adventures, that
you can find on the eamon deluxe page at
http://www.eamonag.org/pages/eamondx.htm

If however your also interested in getting a full private beta copy, you can
contact the developer on eamondel...@gmail.com

A full version should be out later this year, and the developer is looking
into solutions to the dosbox problem.

Hth.

all the best,

Dark.
