Re: [Audyssey] preludeamals (way too much fun)
Hi there, Castaways 2? Didn't know you were working on a new Castaways. Can't seem to find it on your site - still under development? Cheers. Yeah I didn't really push Preludamals very much, because as a puzzle game I knew it would have a smaller audience than say, something where you run around and shoot stuff. For me though, this type of game is tons of fun, and I enjoy working my way through the puzzles. I'm glad to see some renewed interest, and new people enjoying the game. Preludamals is actually a prequel game to Lunamals. The style of game is so different that you wouldn't normally consider it to be part of the same series, but I have a habit of doing that with my connected games. Daytona, Castaways, Paw prints, and Castaways 2 are all extremely different (well C1 and C2 are not terribly far off from one another), but all take place in the same universe. I've never been a fan of making sequel games that are too much like the original, because it then takes something away from that original. I want to give a whole new experience instead of rehashing what people had already played. On the topic of graphics to included sighted players, I do agree with what has been said so far. As John said, many developers are using tools that do not allow for graphics, but also there are some who just choose not to do it. I am a big supporter of including primitive graphics, at the very least, in all of my titles... with the exception of Obsessive Compulsive, because it was written in BGT. Even if the only people you are helping end up being low-vision players, I believe having those high contrast graphics helps them use what they have. If you can hear in stereo you want the games to be in stereo, and if you have even some faint vision, you want to be able to use it. Maybe more developers will start going that route. I know Rocky (relatively new on the development scene) has been putting a lot of work into primitive graphics for his projects, and I encourage him to keep it up! - Aprone --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] Introducing DAG
Hi all, When I was first introduced to the realms of accessible gaming I discovered plenty of concepts that I had never seen before. However based on today's standard of accessible gaming they seem to be the middlemen. Now, in the 2010's we seem to be facing a shift in direction. There are plenty of top-notch games that we could all spend hours and hours playing (Manamon, the BK series and Crazy Party, just to name a few). But then we also have the other extreme. Games that have either been explored countless times before, or some that aren't even proper games. I won't name any names, games or shames in this latter category, for starters because it wouldn't be fair of me, but for second because I do understand what it's like to learn how to tell your computer exactly what you want doing and to feel the thrill and excitement of getting it to do your own thing. However, I feel distinctions should be made between a worthy game, and a personal sample project (which eventually could even turn into a game). Sad though it is, it is also a fact of life that there is no real comprehensive resource for the discussion and/or learning of accessible game development (whether audio, video or text). Though there are plenty of tutorials for learning to develop videogames, learning how to incorporate some kind of accessible feedback in them is a totally different art altogether. There are also separate sites discussing text-based game development. Never yet have I found such a resource specifically for audiogames, except perhaps a single section of the Audiogames forum. Thus, the concept of DAG is born. Developing Accessible Games is a mailing list group I have set up last week. It is intended for the discussion of the design and development of any kind of accessible gaming. I feel that only then can we bring new, interested people on board and so hopefully more and more games, at least from independent developers, will become accessible to us. We can hopefully bring our game development skills together to provide a better gaming experience for everyone, sighted and blind players alike. So to clarify. The list is for the design and development of any kind of accessible gaming (audio and/or plain text, with or without graphics, animations or video etc), for anyone to learn what is involved. It is free for all who are interested in this topic, regardless of skill level. Beginners can ask questions, intermediates can learn better techniques and gain clarification on skills they may already know, and the experts can also hopefully learn more, try and help out people of lower levels and help to shape the tutorials, examples etc. The list is not concentrated on any single programming language, again because languages, compilers, styles of development and project management vary from person to person and from team to team. This is another reason why it's important that people of different skillsets of both design and development can be present. If enough interest is generated I may set up a dedicated website for submitting code snippets, useful libraries and tools for download, code checking features etc. However for the moment it is a simple mailing list. If anyone is interested, you can visit groups.io/g/dag to find out more about the list and subscribe. Cheers. Re: [Audyssey] Change Reaction and the Status of Draconis
Hi Phil, Actually, no I haven't. I wasn't sure who Draconis actually was. I have heard that name before but wasn't sure if that was in the ESP/Adora days. I'll give him a mention. Thanks. Mine keeps saying it can’t access authentication server, and I’ve had a very difficult time trying to contact Draconis over the past month. I have tried everything from Twitter to the helpdesk, even to trying to get alternative contacts from a WhoIs search and through the email address on PayPal, no luck whatsoever. So it seems that, though the website and games are still available, customer support and licence access is a bit on the dead side.
