Subject: [Audyssey] the Jehovah's witnesses viewpoint on gaming: 3 articles

Hi all
My mom is still today a jehovah' witness.
I was reared as a Jehovah witness but I have finally quit them, deciding
that I do not find Jesus amongst them.
Anyway, my mom sent me 3 articles.
The articles comes from a software package called watchtower library
that baptized Jehovah witnesses gets for a small price.
So my mom pulled the articles from there.
2 of them, reflects the view of the Jehovah witnesses about pc and video
gaming.
Obviously, they are aming at the sighted gamer, but you might find
interesting what they had to say about computer and video gaming. There
is

an article about video and computer games in general and then there is an
article on role playing games where they made a few negative comments.
I would very much like some of your's opinions on the first and/or second
articles.
The third article is about toys children made themselves in the ancient
days.
Please let me know what you think about these articles.
Me personally, I feel that the Jehovah witnesses is too strict but others
might differ from me.
I have put all 3 articles in one document.

Hi,

I just started playing on Lost Wishes Mud a week ago and I really like so
far.

It's a LP mud, wich are my favourites. It has over 100 quests, the
equipment saves when you log out and it has a great tutorial for starting
players.

The room discriptions are very good and discriptive. There are no
wilderness maps or such things and it has a special toggle for screen
readers which disables the ascii grafics in the score display, for
example.

There are 13 guilds to choose from when reaching level 10, which I didn't
reach yet, however.

I really like this mud. I'ts great for exploring, reading good room
discriptions and questing. The playerbase is quite small, there are
around 30 players online in high time, but about 15 players are online at
all times.

I would recommend this muds for newbies and for veterans alike,
especially for explorers and questers. This mud is defenately not a hack
and slash thing.

I think it's worth a look for everyone who likes mudding or wants to
start doing so.

The address is:

lost.wishes.net port

Feel free to ask me for help when you see me online, my character name is
Lysandra.

Hope to see some of you online.

Sarah

Hello Sarah.

this is an interesting question in itself, and I'll ask about it on the
arborell forum, - that's unless you'd like to register there and ask
yourself (the arborell Gm is a really nice chap who's always willing to
answer questions).

Windhammer was the first gamebook, and thus might be an ideal place to
start.

The inquisitor's lament is a short novella about one character from
Windhammer, telling what happens to him while the hero of windhammer goes
off on the main quest, so certainly I'd advise having a look at
windhammer first.

The various Jotten related material, ie the book of scars and the Shards
of moonlight gamebook (pluss the murder of crows gamebook which is next on
the release schedule), are about the hoardim. While the hoardim are seen
as the enemy in Windhammer and by the humans of Arborell, they very
much have their own point of view and while not exactly nice and fluffy
aren't precisely evil.

I believe the second major gamebook, earth and stone will bring the
human and hordim characters together.

these are all the materials which are set around the year 950, the
other on site materials are background set before this time.

The recently release Sorrows of gehdru and aume is the creation story of
Arborell.

Song of the dromannian is the story of how humans journeyed across the sea
from their own lands to the continent of Arborell in the year of
settlement 0.

The torchlight game happens in about the year 450, and tells how one of
the artifacts which later and concerns the background of one of the magic
artifacts found in the Windhammer book.

The blood and Iron series takes place in year of settlement 500 or so, and
is a story about one of the hoard wars.

Hopefully this helps you relate things.

Everything is very well explained and placed so you can almost go in any
order, though personally I'd recommend playing windhammer before
moving on either to Torchlight or Shards of moonlight, but if you wanted
to read some of the background material before playing windhammer, or
even as a break from windhammer attempts, I'd say everything accept for
the inquisitor's lament (which is actually about one of the windhammer
characters), should be fine.

Hi everyone.

I just thought I'd give you my thoughts on the new games from l-works.
Super egg hunt has been updated, as you will have seen, and I'm loving the
new version. I've heard accusations of dumbing down, as I think I've said
in a previous mail, I think this is silly. There are more eggs, which
means it's more difficult to here what's where, you move slower and thus
the chicken, christened by one of my friends Gregory Peck, has more time
to get you. In this latest version a bug has been fixed, and my scores are
going up nicely accordingly!

I also love the fact that the horible hip-hop music which I used to find
very aggrivating on Migraine days, has now been replaced by a lovely
outdoor background sound. Also the chicken has changed. Different sound,
and now this is where you're going to think I'm cracked. i used to find
McChicken scary, honest I did. it had a sort of malevolent sound to it, I
hated the peck sound, and the way it would suddenly unfreeze and jump out
at you after a clock sometimes. Now Gregory you can be annoyed with, cos
in this new game, you have to do a fair bit of jinking around to collect
the eggs, and moving from the straight line is what attracts his
attention. He comes flapping and fussing at you, but he's more cartoony,
and I much prefer the new peck sound we have now. I like the fact you can
hear him moving, and that if you freeze him he still clucks, so you can
hear where he is. He's still wicked fast though, you have to watch him.

Ok, new GTR, as I shorten the Great Toy Robbery. First, I didn't realize
I was playing anything new. I'd rather hoped to have some updated toy
sounds. You find it much easier to pick the toys up though, and there are
more, though not berzillions. Where the real change comes is in the elves.
I used to find the old elves much easier to deal with than old chicken,
and could steal stuff right out from under their stupid pogo sticks. Um,
not any more I can't. They're wicked fast and lethal, and hunt in packs,
or they have so far on my game.

The other change is when dealing with the fat jelly belly bean bag! Now in
the old game, when I heard the thunder, I'd breathe a sigh of relief. Now
was the time to start poking fun at the lumbering old idiot, if I ran a
certain way, he'd never get me. Um, not now. I've got stomped twice. That.
never. happened. to me.

Ways the games could be improved? two I can think of only. A pause feature
would be good. I hate it if I'm playing a real wopper, and the phone
goes, or someone messages, and I have to stop and lose a really great
score. Next, I don't like the way you can still hear the music when you're
not in the game window. It makes sending a quick message between games
without closing stuff down like I used to, at least in S E H, impossible
really, and it's not necessary, I don't think.

Sorry to have gone on so long, I'll be interested to see what anyone else
thinks. Thanks, Liam, for all your hard work on your terific games.

Best

Lulu.

Hal reads the link address, which in most cases is actually useful and tells
you there's a link there, -- often it includes information on what the
image is for, for instance in a forum using graphics there might be a
submit image instead of a link, with an address having the word submit
in it.

I will admit in cases like this it can be a bit of a pain and make things
tedius as you said, because of having to sit through long readings of http
addresses to know what a particular link is, -- though it is stil
workable, as with the mining thing.

Fortunately though, core exiles will hopefully soon have all labled images
which will speed things up nicely.

It must have something to do with the way hal reads immages, that is the
screen reader you use if I'm not mistaken dark? Jaws seems to read the links
fine, and now I think he's added labels or something, because in most cases
the buttons have changed from saying things like immage_eden to just saying
the name of the planet or station or whatever you're trying to land on. Its
definitely accessible, but very tedius.

Just a quick question.
Does anyone know of any good action muds/online games?
I’ve tried a lot of them. They just seem to be midevil.
I know that there are such games as miriani and star conquest. But
those are scifi.
I’m looking for something that is a mud/online game that is action
oriented. Send me any ideas you have.
Thanks much,

have you tried using other voices? might be that it's the voice
causing the problems... wait, I remember that one of the sapi5 tags
was indeed the less than or greater than sign.it's used to, funny
enough, silence a line. we've been doing some jokes with klango with
this.

On 5/29/09, dark d...@xgam.org wrote:

Hi Tom.

While I certainly understand what you mean, afterall that's why I
use

Hal with orphius and not sapi (and even if I did, I'd muck about with
pronunciation and verbosity with Hal), when I described it as a bug, i
meant
that it is a flaw in the vip mud program when outputing to sapi which
does

not exist when using it with screen reader support.

Sinse the program is billed as allowing the user to play muds with
sapi, and this issue makes that not possible (due to unexpected
death

through not knowing character status), it is therefore at the least, a
serious issue in program support.

For obvious reasons I'd have not bought the program if it only supported
window eyes and jaws.

but before we go too far down the I wan my money back road, - or
indeed anything near that very nasty pathway, as i said to Che, it seems
this is a more individualized sapi problem which I am having, sinse I was
able to do a test by having a friend also use vip mud, scansoft daniel
and

materia magica, - and found that the text there read without a
hitch, - and in fact after a second experiment, it seems the same
problem occurs in medievia which displays it's text in the same format.

I coppied that text into a text file and then tried reading it with Jim
kitchin's text file reader - which obviously uses sapi, and again, it
wouldn't read.

so, the cause of the problem isn't vip mud or materia magica, - or
even

sansoft daniel, it's sapi!

the problem is i've no idea where to go from here, sinse (as you rightly
pointed out), sapi has no verbosity controls or similar abilities for the
user to mess with how it speaks certain things.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Dark,
That's not necessarily a bug. Comparing a screen reader to a software
speech system like Sapi isn't really a good comparison in this instance.
While text to speech systems like Sapi have there own dictionaries that
tells the synth how to say various words, numbers, and punctuation
marks,

etc any third-party software such as a screen reader can over ride the
voice's built in speech dictionary. For example, in Jaws you can
configure

it to say numbers as whole numbers, single digits, or in pares. So a
string of numbers like 1, 9, 8, 6 can be spoken as 1,986, 19 86, or 1 9
8

6. That's a simple case where the screen reader overrides whatever the
text to speech voice would ordinarily say given the same number in
another

application.
Bottom line, just becauseJaws says something correctly it doesn't mean
the

Sapi voice or application using Sapi is buggy. It is more likely that
Jaws, Window Eyes, Hal, etc has performed some extra speech processing
behind the scenes and is more accurate.
Smile.

dark wrote:

Hi Che.

sinse that line reads fine with JAws and not with Sapi, I would
actually

class it as a bug, I'm only using scripting because it won't
automatically read.

I've tried the command with what I believe to be the correct syntax in
the trigger dialogue, - as I detailed, but either I did something
wrong, or there is something more intrinsic to why sSapi won't read a
line written in betwene less than greater than prompts.

I'm really not sure sinse as I said, apparently it reads fine with
other

speech methods.

I hate that when you have to choose easy or normal then says
TreasureMania: TreasureMania1

Re: [Audyssey] Does anyone play materia magica?

2009-05-18 Thread Helena

Sometimes it can be pretty hard as a newbie to join a mud.

I used to play asylum quite a bit, I think I still remember the majority of
the zones and such. Its definitely a tough mud, given all the deathtraps
and such lying around. The only plus is that its rather hard to lose to
mobs as long as you get a good set of equipment. I've got a few characters
on there, Talerous, Karanthus, Korgoth and Gordan, feel free to look me up
some time if I'm on if you need help collecting equipment or being shown
around some good eq zones and such. I remember how tough it can be to get
all your stuff back after hitting a deathtrap, so I'm always willing to
help out.

As for materia magica, a lot of that stuff actually sounds rather
interesting. I've always liked the idea of ship combat, will have to look
into that. I restarted my character the other day to try to get all the
quests in the newbie zone done since it transports you out at level 10,
I'm not Gordon the minotaur barbarian. Decided to go my usual warrior
route since ranger was kinda cool but was less than ideal as a fighter
mage combination it seemed.

Hey Mike,
well what sort of things do you mean to keep it from getting boring? the
problem wit muds is that they are open ended and all usually have some
redundency. In Materia lets see, you level of course. You can do this
either by killing, getting marks, questing etc. once you are leveled,
there are runs. runs are tasks that usually require a form and you go
through a bunch of tasks to take on a very strong and hard mob who gives
nice rewards either in eq or gold or things like that. My husband does
form runs all the time and is great with them. He would help give
suggestions on working in forms better. You can obtaina ship and kill
pirates for gold and exp. I haven't done this yet but my husband has
found a way to work with the ascii map. When you archon you get hunters
periodically. you can quest any time. search for marks. another mud I am
trying is asylum. I don't know exactly how to describe it other then that
it appears to be very puzzle oriented. I messed with it years ago but am
trying it more now. the combat is very primative and many parts are
confusing still to me but I like the Idea of trying to figure out the
puzzles or quests as they call them.

to turn the compass off. you use set compass. it is a toggle. and to have
the exits appear in text you would type set show-exits again it is a
toggle. the immortal staff are actually pretty open to trying to make
things accessible. My husband is a guide on there and has helped other
blind players.

Hmm. I forgot the commands to mak the map non-graphical and turn into
compus exits, though I forgot how. It is, though, indeed possible.

I was wondering if people had any tips, sinse i find locating npcs and

I'm Timrel on there if anyone is around.

2009-05-06 Thread Helena

Hi,
My name is Helena Tull. I live in Stockholm, Sweden, and have just joined
