Myself I use some shorthand, but I don't use full punctuation.
Saying that I try to do full sentences.
I mostly like using skype, its sometimes easier to convey what I wish.

I used to use proper grammar, capital letters, everything. Now I use
commas and colons, periods, etc, but I don't capitalize the first word

really.

I would suggest you take a deep breath, calm down and learn to write

with correct punctuation, it's far easier to get the sense
of what someone is saying.

it's also a good habit to get into in case you need to write
a formal letter.

for example. i work in tech support. Most of my

Imagine what would happen if I didn't use correct

chances are, if you don't write correctly in e-mail groups

Actually, people, whether blind or not, should care about how they are
understood. Punctuation and, to a degree, spelling, are important tools
used to accomplish this. If you don't punctuate, and your spelling and
grammar are horrible, even though you may not be, you appear uneducated,
ignorant, retarded, stupid, or just plain lazy. You give people a very bad
impression of yourself. If you don't care about your impression, that sure
says a lot about you, doesn't it? Especially since the cure is so darned
simple. If needed, get a spell checker from the Internet, learn to use it,
and do so. Nobody will know that you are a bad speller anymore, and you've
just raised people's opinion of you by such a huge jump. People will pay a
heck of a lot more attention to you if they can understand your messages.
If nothing else, listen to your message before sending it out. If it goes
on and on with no pauses, punctuate so that it makes sense. This only takes
a minute or two, and the rewards are so well worth your time and effort!

I couldn't agree more.

the amount of e-mails I get from day to day with poor
spelling and sloppy typing is incredible, it takes twice the
time to read because you have to work out what the person is
trying to say.

And this is coming from me, a selfconfessed awful speller,
honestly, my spelling is pretty poor.

2008-03-24 Thread Darren H
It's not a question of education.

It's a question of laziness and not being bothered.

I wouldn't think twice about helping someone, regardless of
spelling, but I'm not going to help them if I can't
understand what they're asking.

Makes no odds to me, type it correctly and get your
questions answered, or type it sloppily and stand the chance
of folks not answering you because they don't really
understand what you're asking.

Cheers

Well let's see. how many people actually attempted to
 correct their
punctuation when you guys told them to? no one did. why?
 because they don't
care. if people don't care and they're the ones writing,
 why should anyone
else? Also the mods haven't complained about this, and
 they have the
ultimate say. When people use incorrect spelling on a

what happens? they simply get banned, or people don't
 answer their

Actually, people, whether blind or not, should care about
 how they are
understood. Punctuation and, to a degree, spelling, are
 important tools
used to accomplish this. If you don't punctuate, and
 your spelling and
grammar are horrible, even though you may not be, you
 appear uneducated,
ignorant, retarded, stupid, or just plain lazy. You give
 people a very
 bad
impression of yourself. If you don't care about your
 impression, that
 sure
says a lot about you, doesn't it? Especially since the
 cure is so darned
simple. If needed, get a spell checker from the
 Internet, learn to use
 it,
and do so. Nobody will know that you are a bad speller
 anymore, and
 you've
just raised people's opinion of you by such a huge jump.
 People will pay
 a
heck of a lot more attention to you if they can
 understand your messages.
If nothing else, listen to your message before sending it
 out. If it goes
on and on with no pauses, punctuate so that it makes
 sense. This only
 takes
a minute or two, and the rewards are so well worth your
 time and effort!

When the question of why it is important, I try to answer as clearly and
understandable as I can. When someone does not get a question asked or
doesn't get help with something, and they ask why, and they always use
horrible punctuation, grammar or spelling that makes their post practically
unreadable, I tell them why. They ask? I answer. Simple as that. There
are some people on the list whose messages I don't even bother with, because
I know what's coming. If you notice that I don't ever respond to certain
people, look at their messages, and you'll notice that they all have
something in common.

The reason is likely to do with how screen reader like jaws
 process text.

with correct punctuation, it's far easier to get the sense
 of what someone is saying.

it's also a good habit to get into in case you need to write
 a formal letter.

for example. i work in tech support. Most of my
 correspondence are via e-mail.

Imagine what would happen if I didn't use correct
 punctuation?

chances are, if you don't write correctly in e-mail groups
or discussion forums, it'll bleed over to your more formal
correspondence, which is a bad reflection on the individual.

Just my view and should be taken as such.

and this is exactly what email rules were made for. Simply create a rule
that dumps a person's message directly in the trash, and problem solved. I
do it all the time and it works like a charm. it is quite funny to see
replies to emails I don't even see lol.

Am I wrong in that MSN is supposed to be for short, concise text
messaging?
If I am correct, then abbreviations and misspelling to save space
is
expected. That is not the case on an Email list such as this.

Imagine what would happen if I didn't use correct
 punctuation?

chances are, if you don't write correctly in e-mail groups

correspondence, which is a bad reflection on the individual.

Just my view and should be taken as such.

the amount of e-mails I get from day to day with poor

2008-03-24 Thread Andy
When I'm chatting, I never really use puncuation nor do I
capitalize things, I haven't been doing that on audiogames.net
either, although for more i'mportant things (essays? papers?
reports?) I have to go back and put periods, commas, exclamation
points, question marks and quote marks etc. Point is: When
reading, writing, or otherwise doing anything email-related, heck
with it... Dunno why, I'm just not used to capitalizing in this
stuff. Rofl!

 don't criticize
those that don't. fact is people don't really care. all
 they'll do is use
even worse punctuation just to annoy you. So please guys
 do us all a favor
and drop it already ok? You're just generating
 unnecessary
traffic. You say you're mature, so prove it.

 Hi Ian,

I would suggest you take a deep breath, calm down and
 learn to write
with punctuation before you send your next message. It is
 quite possible
that it will be readable after all.

 Thanks a lot.

hi all thanks to the bad apples we are not going to see
 thomas's free
d starwars game and stuff like that so all i am going
 to say is
thanks a lot to all of you out their who are more
 concerned about
having your type of game that you wanted rather than see
 the changed
copy. you would not have been loosing out on your money
 as your key
would have been still active so you would have been
 getting a better
game with out paying any more money out.,

so all i can say is thanks a lot

Hi Andy,
Well, I am one. Believe it or not often on chat clients like AIM, for
example, I don't use a lot of short hand words. I try to use grammer and
punctuation, and I have actually been thanked for it in the past. There
are even sighted instant messenger users that can't stand to read a
bunch of three letter half words strung together in a jumble.

I used to use proper grammar, capital letters, everything. Now I use
commas and colons, periods, etc, but I don't capitalize the first word
of every sentence. I'll use the lol and rofl but other than that...not
really.
Cheers.

Yeah, I know Ryan, and Thom wow that's interesting. Actually, I
know a few people who use proper grammar and stuff, not that it
matters to me, I'm perfectly fine with deciphering 3 letter
jumbled funk, although when I have 30 messages that's where I
draw the line. Or should I saw msgsen (grins)

Another incentive for good punctuation and grammar and spelling is this: If
you ever want to be a beta tester on a team, you'd better be able to be
understood when trying to convey the problems you encounter and/or ideas on
solutions. It's darned important.
