Myself I use some shorthand, but I don't use full punctuation. Saying that I try to do full sentences. I mostly like using skype, its sometimes easier to convey what I wish. At 02:10 p.m. 25/03/2008, you wrote: I used to use proper grammar, capital letters, everything. Now I use commas and colons, periods, etc, but I don't capitalize the first word of every sentence. I'll use the lol and rofl but other than that...not really. Cheers. -Ryan On 3/24/08, Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Andy, Well, I am one. The reason is likely to do with how screen reader like jaws process text. with correct punctuation, it's far easier to get the sense of what someone is saying. it's also a good habit to get into in case you need to write a formal letter. for example. i work in tech support. Most of my correspondence are via e-mail. Imagine what would happen if I didn't use correct punctuation? chances are, if you don't write correctly in e-mail groups or discussion forums, it'll bleed over to your more formal correspondence, which is a bad reflection on the individual. Yes I'm aware of this, however if the person hasn't been using punctuation for the past 20 years what makes any of you think they'll start using it now? If you think punctuation on this list is bad, you should try talking to some of the sighted people on MSN. now that worries me. - Original Message - From: Darren H [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Monday, March 24, 2008 8:06 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] blind people and punctuation was Re: thanks a lot. Actually, people, whether blind or not, should care about how they are understood. Punctuation and, to a degree, spelling, are important tools used to accomplish this. If you don't punctuate, and your spelling and grammar are horrible, even though you may not be, you appear uneducated, ignorant, retarded, stupid, or just plain lazy. You give people a very bad impression of yourself. If you don't care about your impression, that sure says a lot about you, doesn't it? Especially since the cure is so darned simple. If needed, get a spell checker from the Internet, learn to use it, and do so. Nobody will know that you are a bad speller anymore, and you've just raised people's opinion of you by such a huge jump. People will pay a heck of a lot more attention to you if they can understand your messages. If nothing else, listen to your message before sending it out. If it goes on and on with no pauses, punctuate so that it makes sense. This only takes a minute or two, and the rewards are so well worth your time and effort! --- Laughter is the best medicine. Charles I couldn't agree more. the amount of e-mails I get from day to day with poor spelling and sloppy typing is incredible, it takes twice the time to read because you have to work out what the person is trying to say. And this is coming from me, a selfconfessed awful speller, honestly, my spelling is pretty poor. It's not a question of education. It's a question of laziness and not being bothered. I wouldn't think twice about helping someone, regardless of spelling, but I'm not going to help them if I can't understand what they're asking. Makes no odds to me, type it correctly and get your questions answered, or type it sloppily and stand the chance of folks not answering you because they don't really understand what you're asking. Well let's see. how many people actually attempted to correct their punctuation when you guys told them to? no one did. why? because they don't care. if people don't care and they're the ones writing, why should anyone else? Also the mods haven't complained about this, and they have the ultimate say. When people use incorrect spelling on a sighted forum guess what happens? they simply get banned, or people don't answer their questions. When the question of why it is important, I try to answer as clearly and understandable as I can. When someone does not get a question asked or doesn't get help with something, and they ask why, and they always use horrible punctuation, grammar or spelling that makes their post practically unreadable, I tell them why. They ask? I answer. Simple as that. There are some people on the list whose messages I don't even bother with, because I know what's coming. I read everything I'm interested in, even when there's stuff like: plz hlp me with thess feture off thiss gam thx Now if you can't read that. That's sorta what some people write on here. I try not to write plz, thx, etc since it sounds like crap on my bn. Suppose one could put hlp, thx, etc into their screen reading software's dictionary listings, (which i did with the Jaws crash words), and now whoever jokester tries to spam me on messenger with h (tick) v e, I'm not affected. Hi Andy, Well, I am one. Believe it or not often on chat clients like AIM, for example, I don't use a lot of short hand words. I try to use grammer and punctuation, and I have actually been thanked for it in the past. There are even sighted instant messenger users that can't stand to read a bunch of three letter half words strung together in a jumble. Andy wrote: Who does propper grammar on msn? I used to use proper grammar, capital letters, everything.
