Re: [Audyssey] good muds I have used
Hi. Ok I will do my best do explain batmud setup a little more. I have forgotten a lot of it as it has been a while since I created a character. First, you are only allowed two characters on batmud and only one can be logged in at a time. So pick the name you really like. Don't worry so much about race and such. You can always reincarnate to something else. Over the time I have played I have heard ranger is a very good new player guild. They would pick the nomad background and then probably a giant cyclops or the like as your race. Then ask someone either on newbie channel or in the ranger guild to help you to that guild or to give the whereami coordinates. It helps a lot if you explain your blind and use a screen reader and can't see the map. Some batmud map sites searched for on google you can right click on a link and then copy it to the clipboard and then paste it from the clipboard to get the whereami coordinates for an area. Once you know those coordinates you can basically get to that location. whereami is a command you can type to find out your current coordinates. This is really helpful when your trying to get some where. All major cities, ferries and areas have these on map sites online or you can ask help in game explaining why you need the help. Batmud is not a game you learn fast you must take your time. Here are some commands I hope will help or how to find out these commands. I already explained the whereami command. Having brief on always helps. That way you only look at a room when you want in the usual typing l way. Do set show to list your settings options. The first one you want to set is text-only to on. So find that option and then type set number of toxt only to on. For example if text-only is 24 type set 24 on. I also set everything that will help with keeping the amount of text down to a minimum. Really a lot of it after set text-only on is really just personal preference. Text only gets rid of the crazy map and makes moving around a lot easier. I usually set lines to a higher number than 25 but again this is totally personal preference. Most chat channels are off by default which is really nice and beside most of them aren't worth having on anyway. Some people on there don't seem to have good manners sometimes. They call it fun I call it annoying. Really all you have to do once you turn text-only on and set any orr compands you wish to set is just talk on the newbie channel find friends and enjoy. Oh if you battle I turn a lot of battle stuff off. But again totally personal preference. The command you need for that is battle. Just review your screen for proper syntax. If you do set followed by a number it will exlpain what that number does I think and what it is set at. Nice thing about all this set up is it is done once and then your free to do whatever you like. I don't play there much anymore as entombed really is fascinating me and my life is just busy otherwse. Again batmud isn't a go fast speed up the levels game. But you should never ever get bored. And there is enough to interest anyone of most types of interests. If you like hack and slash it is there. If you like exploring tons to explore. If you like crafting and making things and picking plants you can do that too. You can go it alone or group and you can reincarnate if you don't like your guild and background and race. Text only being set to on via the set compand is your key to aessibility. [Audyssey] good muds I have used
Hello everyone. First I am new to the list and tend to be long-winded and just reading mostly. The topic of good muds always interests me. After years of trying several different muds including alter aeon I finally settled on one called bat mud. I didn't pick it for friendly players and I definitely didn't pick it for hack and slash or even for questing. I picked it because of its great crafting and herb and merchant system. I have tried several muds that say they have a great crafting system only to find out it was very minimal compared to batmud. I could go on here why I don't like the other games I mentioned above but that may make you think they are bad games and that is simply not true. Anyway one thing does bother me however. And in no way am I faulting anyone. But it is this idea that some muds are more accessible to the blind than others. This always bothers me. Because every mud I have ever played has always been fully completely accessible. Some of them now such as alter aeon, aardwolf, materiamagica and discworld have settings specifically to help blind people out a bit. But in most cases those settings are already there available for your changing as you like. There usually is no need to change the port you connect too or such like. I fear that some games have made it in a way to easy for blind players. Sure it is nice to have everything set up when you first enter the game but it doesn't teach you how to change settings and the like. I always prefer to change my own settings the way I want. Maybe that is why I never stuck with alter aeon. That and the fact I just do not like killing things all the time which is also why I didn't stick with most of the other games above. All muds are accessible unless they are graphical. you only need to figure them out. And no matter what pick a mud to your interests and desires. Really only topmudsites and mudconnect can help you out there. Advice from other people helps yes. But ultimately just trying out different muds that fit your interest can really help you out. I probably should not say this. But medievia's author has said that they will not make medievia accessible to the blind. First I want to say they don't have too. But I would stay away from medievia. Dennis has even confirmed that grouping is optional (if it werent' I wouldn't be playing myself). it's been a while sinse I have been on alter though, I probably need to get back to it. Ben, What part is giving you the most trouble? I generally don't have much problem finding areas I can handle above level 20, but then again I know where most things are. Maybe we just need to put better signs in the game showing where to go. I disagree with that heartily. It's in no way too hard. Re: [Audyssey] good muds
Another great hack and slash mud which I play on a semi regular basis Is unofficial squaresoft mud. Its set in the universe of various squaresoft games, and has quests to do if you want them or can figure them out. Its fairly newbie friendly, and I'd love to see more people playing it, as then I'd have people to help out now and then and wouldn't likely get bored grinding so easily. If anyone's interested in checking it out: uossmud.sandwich.net:9000 Look me up as gordan, but if anyone's thinking of playing, you might want to post on here, as I haven't been playing a lot lately and am not likely to log on unless I spacifically know at least one person is going to try the game out. I'll do what I can to help people out getting started. It's a fun game if you're looking for something beyond the scope of realism, and I notice there're a lot of RPG fans on this list, so I just figured I'd toss this out there given the genre and the call for hack and slash muds. It isn't that, *yet*. It is in public beta (exitting ALPHA) stages, and we are working our hardest to code, and build it the most realisticly. Have you connected in the last month or two? I will ask you. The coders and builders have made alot of modifications and changes to the internal workings (CORE) of the game, and have added alot to make it feel more realistic. The coder(S) and builder(S) also strive to make your time connected to Cosmos, as "Error-less" as possible. Cyberassault is ok. My thing is, i just don't like muds where the objective is kill kill kill. I like MUDs where you can actually be your character, live a life, etc. Tristan B TrekGames.net Cosmos - TrekGames.net, port 1234. The difference in a lot of gamers is that there's different levels of grinding that people can deal with. Some people can play alter aeon all day and grind to their hearts content, even though the combat is hardly descriptive at all and grinding gets rather slow at higher levels. Some people need the more advanced miriani to get their grinding fix and earn their place on a game. Me personally, I generally don't like grinding in any form, but instead look for well-described combat or attack skills, for example: New moon, discworld, unofficial squaresoft mud. I also look for advanced mechanics, godwars2, project bob, etc. Very, very few muds interest me for long, and even the ones that do I get bored of eventually no matter how powerful I get, hence my ripping of miriani a few days back. The gameplay itself gets tedius as well, you've got about 6 choices of activities, only 2 of which are worth doing and even those are tedius after a while. Yes these are just my opinions, and no I won't be responding to any defence of the mud, I played it for a couple months and thus believe these opinions to be well-formulated. I have no problems with defending what's mine in an uncontrolled environment, but I think its pushing the limits of ridiculous when it takes you between an hour and a day to pull off said defense, and then people can't just drop it there and go find something better to do. Not to mension immature and petty actions like stranding and droid stealing are allowed, things that by all right 90% of people have no fair chance of defending against and for the most part aren't even crippling enough to be worth doing. It's just not that great of a game. I personally prefer a more controlled environment where solo play is more viable and you're free to do your own thing whenever and wherever you want rather than socializing in a public area only to suddenly be grabbed by some loser and forced to spend 24 hours in his ship for no better reason than because he can make you. But again, these are just my opinions. Call it complaining if you want, but I for one give miriani a hard thumbs down. -- --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. my real reason of quitting miriani was because the pricing was just to damn high. I don't care about mudding really online gaming even less although I do dabble in stuff, core exiles is one thing I keep up at least in short bursts. Right now I am doing a rather hard mission so every 4 weeks I come back in and battle for a few hours on it. Eventually I hope to finnish mmy mission and get another. if I get bored I may switch. I personally think miriani is lame. You spend three quarters of your time fending off annoying, so-called space pirates who think they need to get in a virtual pissing contest with anyone who blinks at them funny to prove a point, or mess with someone just cause they feel like it. Re: [Audyssey] good muds
Hi, A person named "zinc" from the audiogames forum said the following about Cosmos. It basically says what I hear many people say goes on at Cosmos.: [Start Message] I would like to encourage you all not to play the MOO "Cosmos". Some reasons why I think this. 1) It's a Miriani clone. 2) The admins are terrible. One of them took a stun gun to my head! 3) They cheat. I stunned one of the admin guys player characters, and I was put into a conference room until the time is up. 4) The website is poorly designed. 5) The owner is one of the most immature people I've ever come across. [A possible insult removed] [End of Message] You can verify that here: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?id=3047 While I haven't spent lots of time since the beginning of Cosmos, I've also heard from several people how buggy Cosmos is. "Many things don't work, lots of errors, it's unorganized". While Humanity MOO was certainly a failure in terms of ideas, code wise there was hardly any errors. This is why the core based of Humanity MOO was so good. A small MOO I run myself, LearnMOO, is based off Humanity MOO core. We haven't received one error relating to code we wrote. Thanks.
