I just remembered, but SSE setup can at least look to see if dot net is
installed, but dunno about direct x. SSE is free and acts similar to inno

Hi Shaun,
Ahem... There is no need to install .NET 1.1, 2.0, and 3.0 all together.
It is my understanding that the .NET 3.0 Framework is backward
compatible with .NET 1.1 and 2.0 applications. At least with the version
that came with Windows Vista the pre-installed 3.0 framework works fine
with 1.1 and 2.0 .NET based apps out of the box. The only update that
you might want to grab is .NET 3.5 which is so new not a lot of .NET
stuff is using yet.

Re: [Audyssey] montazoomas return and stfc both won't start

2008-01-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,
First, One thing the setup program has to do is test if the version
installed is older, the same, or newer than the one required for the
game. As I have mentioned in previous emails to my knowledge InnoSetup
can't do this, but Microsoft Setup Installer can. Which is a bit of a
problem for me at the moment.
Second, if you already have said requirements installed all you would
need to do is get the 30 MB game and not the extra 110 MB in
requirements again and again for each game. That takes up allot more
storage space, and takes longer to download to boot. All unnecessary if
you have it already setup and installed.

Re: [Audyssey] montazoomas return and stfc both won't start

2008-01-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Kuvvosh,
Well, as I stated in my last message to do what you are asking requires
that I obtain Microsoft Setup Installer which can do that and more.
However, you probably don't realise to get Microsoft Setup Installer I
must buy Visual Studio Pro 2008 which costs around $700 USD./ I no
longer have $700 to buy it, and I won't buy it for that price.
InnoSetup, which is free, works well enough as long as end users
remember to install my games in the proper order. As it happens once I
get things moved to Java DirectX and .NET won't be a major issue any
more anyway.
I also had a real need for a set of new laptops. My wife's laptop was an
old laptop running Windows 98, and it really neded updated to something
new. My old laptop was beginning to have some technical issues like over
heating, rebooting for no reason, and half the time the cd drive
wouldn't read disks. In other words I think it was about shot. Not to
mention I baught it used, and it wasn't exactly in great condition when
I got it.
So my wife and I agreed we should take some of the earnings from
Montezuma's Return to invest in a set of new laptops and Office 2007.

also worth noting that newer dotnets will require directx to be reloaded, I
usually install dotnet 1.1, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 and then get all updates and load
them, and once very update is loaded including service packs and the like I
then install directx.
you can do it that way but if you do it just loading dx, first before dotnet or
after you have loaded dotnet and you update it or install another dotnet set
then you invalidate the install.
However I usually install directx9 first, load all the dotnet and reinstall, as
ita easier and faster to reinitualise dx on all the dotnets rather then the
wait to install everything.

Re: [Audyssey] montazoomas return and stfc both won't start

2008-01-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Cara,
Well, the only problem with your suggestion is that I would require
Microsoft Setup Installer to do my installs with rather than using
InnoSetup. InnoSetup is a nice installer, but last I checked it can not
look for .NET Framework dependancies and update the .NET Framework from
the web or cd based on installed version. It is also unable to look for
specific requirements such as the Managed DirectX components for .NET
applications.
As you might expect in order to get an up to date version of Microsoft
Setup Installer I would have to purchase Visual Studio Pro 2008 which I
no longer have the funds for. I just went out and purchased a new
laptop, correction, two new laptops for my wife and I with the earnings
from Montezuma's Return. Other than not having MicrosoftSetup Installer
support I have found Visual Studio Express 2008 fits all of my business
needs.
The rest of the funds from Montezuma's Return have been alocated for
sounds, music, and other USA Games needs.

I was just discussing this off list with someone else and the reason the
DirectX and .NET Frameworks were not installed with my games is it will
add around 110 MB to every game install. A game like Montezuma's Return,
which is 29 MB, would instantly become a 139 MB download. That uses more
server drive space, more bandwidth, and would be difficult for those on
dialup to download.
I guess what gets me about this entire thing is including it with every
game would be unnecessary if people would just read the documentation
first That is all that is required.. Though, I guess developers have to
make up for others inability to do the obvious.

Hi Shane,
Yep, time to follow your own advice.
Just for the record I am guilty of doing this now and then myself. Often
times I think I know what I am doing so I don't look at the docs right
away, and get in trouble. Then, I read the docs and find out where I
goofed up, and am able to fix the issue.

PS

How exactly does a brain fart?

Also, a thought: If you include them with every game, and I have updated
them since they came out, how would that affect my system? This is why I
don't think they should be included with every game.

Thomas, an alternative might be to have the installer check for the
appropriate .net framework / Dx versions and point the user to the
website or the docs if they aren't installed?...

I noticed on a lot of new programs that if you install them, if you don't
meet the requirements it will not install until you do, and some even
install the stuff for you before the main program install. Why not just
compile the game with the DX and .Net and have them install before the game
so that way no one can't say it won't install?

Hi Charles,
It is a sad fact that a large majority of users buy products and begin
using the product without even looking at the supplied owner's manual.
It is also a statistical fact those same users that didn't read the
owner's manual are amung the first to begin emailing or calling tech
support wanting help even though the answer is right there in the
manual. I can understand if something is confusing, but a lot of the
time it just comes down to end user laziness.

Dang. Manuals and other documentation sure can solve a lot of simple
headaches, can't they? Read them, folks. That's why they're there!

Re: [Audyssey] montazoomas return and stfc both won't start

2008-01-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
I answered Shane's question off list, but I want to share the solution
here so others don't make the same mistake. The Montezuma's Return
manual as well as the USA Games FAQ page specifically state the proper
order of installation is:

1. Install .NET Framework 3.0.
2. Install DirectX August 2007.
3. Install USA Games product or products.

Failing to install our games in this exact order will cause our games to
crash and fail. The reason is DirectX will not properly install and
register it's .NET components unless a working and properly registered
.NET Framework is installed first. Unfortunately, this tends to be our
number one problem amung new USA Games customers, and we strongly
recommend reading our docs before doing an install the first time.

2008-01-27 Thread Shane Davidson
Ive repaired this issue.
Missing direct X things.
I installed direct X before dot net, so have to rerun the install for direct
X to install the dot net support.
Thanks.

[Audyssey] montazoomas return and stfc both won't start

2008-01-25 Thread Shane Davidson
Ok, after installing direct X august 2007 and dot net framework 3.0 from the
usagames.us website, I installed both STFC and montazoomas return on this new
installation of windows with dotnet3.0 and directX august 2007, when starting
either game I get an error report dialogue with both send and don't send
buttons.
Any idea why this would be happening?
Remember dot net framework 3.0 and directX august 2007 are both installed
thanks.
